Subject: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 20 Feb 14 - 06:07 PM Starting on Tuesday 25th February 2014 and then on the last Tuesday of each month: "Just Voices", a new singaround/session for unaccompanied singers only (no instruments). Venue: The Black Bull Inn, Kirkgate, Birstall, West Yorks. WF17 9PB (UK), in upstairs function room with good acoustics. Friendly and welcoming pub, good beer. Starts 8 pm prompt. Free admission. To quote the flyer: "The aim of this friendly singaround/session is the sharing of good songs: whether they be traditional or contemporary; rousing chorus songs and harmonies; or solo ballads". (This might also include the occasional monologue or poem, I understand.... ) And before any musicians get the chance to be offended - this is the first gathering to cater specifically for unaccompanied singers that I can recall in the Yorkshire area, in quite some time (it's a good ten years since the popular and long-lived Otley Red Lion singers' session folded). After all, there are plenty of sessions for musicians only, so why not one for singers only, just for a change? As well as singer-participants, listeners (audience) are also most welcome. Come and give it a try! |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 22 Feb 14 - 02:23 PM Looking forward to seeing you there Joe. You're always most welcome. Now Guest, no need to be so negative - there's no shame in this new venture, it's just an honest attempt to plug a gap in the scene, whoever else is involved. Hey, give it a chance - it might just work... |

From: MoorleyMan Date: 26 Feb 14 - 11:38 AM First night went well, with a decent and appreciative turnout, 43 songs were sung in total, and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: r.padgett Date: 26 Feb 14 - 12:17 PM How many of the 43 did you sing and from memory? Ray |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 26 Feb 14 - 02:44 PM Sorry you didn't make it Ray. I believe the tally was that eight singers sang 5 songs apiece, and one sang 3. Luckily no memory feat was required, as Maureen's a keen statistician and kept a record of the total! |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: r.padgett Date: 26 Feb 14 - 06:53 PM Yea Mo's a good un for fair play Ray |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: nutty Date: 27 Feb 14 - 12:40 PM It depends how you define " a session" Yorkie According to the Oxford English Dictionary a session is - A period devoted to a particular activity: - so this activity is , in my view, correctly defined. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: Joe Nicholson Date: 28 Feb 14 - 07:56 AM The thing is most folkies seem to regard a session as an instrumentalists only event and as a singer I tend to aviod them as I believe do many others so I think it is always a good idea to specify the type if event as Dave does. Regards Joe Nicholson |
Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: r.padgett Date: 28 Feb 14 - 09:44 AM Quite right Joe and David, singers' session is correctly titled! Ray |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: Dennis the Elder Date: 25 Jun 14 - 03:47 AM Thanks for a good night last night, not many there but some great songs and singing. With regards to the query regarding Eric Bogle singing Stan Rogers Lock Keeper, it is on his CD "At This Stage" Disc 1. This CD has introductions to each song which you can play separately or omit, once you have heard them a few times, a good idea, Eric states why he sings this song. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 01 Oct 14 - 10:40 AM After a couple of rather quiet nights during the summer doldrums, last night's session was much better supported, with some especially fine visiting singers dropping in to join our constant and ever-welcome Joe and Maureen. Hoping the trend continues. Looking forward to October's.. |

Subject: RE: New Singers' Session - Birstall (Yorks.) From: MoorleyMan Date: 27 Nov 14 - 04:05 PM Thanks Dennis, it was good to see you - and hear your songs - on Tuesday. But what a pity that the turnout was well down on previous months. Sadly, my voice hasn't lasted well since the session... Meanwhile it would be good to see some more singers at December's Just Voices session, which will be held in the usual place on Tuesday 30th. The room is booked for the first half of 2015. Pass the word.. |
