Smithsonian Folkways has just announced the reissue of the Unesco Traditional Music Collection. Here's the blurb.

"Smithsonian Folkways Gives New Life to the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music Starting April 29 The UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music, a pioneering effort to make the world's musical heritage more widely known and appreciated, takes on new life starting April 29 with the release of more than 100 albums, including 12 previously unreleased recordings, spanning more than 70 nations. Two albums will be released each week for more than a year, and will be available on CD, digital download, streaming services, and by library subscription."

For anyone interested in ethnic music, this is wonderful news, although it does mean I'll be skint for the next twelve months.

The reissue programme began last Tuesday (30th April), with a pair of samplers from the UNESCO catalogue. Since they appear to duplicate stuff which will crop up on later releases, I've put them on one side for the time being.

Yesterday however, Smithsonian issued the next two releases; a pair of discs of North Indian vocal music:-

North India: Vocal music - Dhrupad and KhyalVarious Artists. UNES08076

North India: Dhrupad Singing by Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar. UNES08283

To describe them as stunning would be a considerable understatement, and I think most Indian music buffs would regard them as essential listening - especially when the download price is less than six quid each.

Fred,
Thanks for the links!
Over the years, a number of UNESCO (also UNICEF) series were
published on LP - among them PHILIPS "Music Sources", EMI-ODEON "Musical Atlas", BARENREITER-Musicaphon Musical Anthology of the Orient, Africa, India. Some other odd labels also had UNESCO
affiliation.
ROUNDER reissued some of the BARENREITER series - does anyone have a listing for the ROUNDER CD's??
The SMITHSONIAN series seems to be drawn from the AUVIDIS label.
Are there any other sources for the Smithsonian series ?? Is material from the other labels included in the Smithsonian series??
Thanks!
Best wishes, Thomas.

Thomas. I'll answer you questions when I've got a minute to spare.

In the meantime, the next pair of releases are now downloadable. They are of Norway and Ireland.
