I'm ready to put my first video on YouTube. I followed directions and signed into my Google account. Unfortunately, one signs into Google using one's G-mail address.

We couldn't find any way to set up a screen name which doesn't use my e-mail address. Anybody know how YouTube posters establish their screen names? (We were afraid to click "Publish" and then see if it was a disaster or not.)

Help was no help.

It seems they want to use your gmail account name. You used to be able to set up a screen name, I used to go by tradfolky1, but now I go by my gmail address. Which is not something I necessarily wanted, but I couldn't fight city hall. I have friend who still uses a screen name, but she had to fight to keep it.

I necessarily wanted, but I couldn't fight city hall. I have friend who still uses a screen name, but she had to fight to keep it.

Thanks for the Help page, Guest, but I think it's out of date. When I followed directions and clicked on my name, it failed to bring up "More Options".

I think we won't be submitting that video after all.

You could, of course, just set up a new Google account, and take it from there.

Google is throwing up more problems and complications, they keep trying to force me to give up my youtube screen-name and go by my real name instead (not the gmail moniker by the way) and in the process sign me up for a Google+ account. So far I have been able to hold off on that (even though I had to delete Google+ membership twice after they tricked me into that).

A few days ago I tried to leave a comment for a youtube video and found I was only allowed to do that if I accepted they sign me up for a Google+ account. Something I do not want under any circumstance. And again I had to waste a lot of time getting rid of an unwanted Google+ account.

If things continue this way I will probably ditch the youtube account altogether.

I still have my YouTube screen name but it wouldn't let me use it to post a comment recently. I'll see if its still working when I film some festival sessions. If not I'll find another site to host the movies.

I had trouble last time I tried to post on my club's site. I can't remember exactly what happened - something about youtube trying to make my personal email address a sub-address of one of my gmail addresses?????? My personal email address is with an Australian ISP & is no way related to the club's gmail address.

Anyway I ended up with that address on the gmail login page! But I ignored it & haven't added anything to the club's page since.

Maybe I'm cutting off my nose to spite may face, but after reading the adventures above, maybe not.

I'm going to pursue what Guest Ed said above - set up a new account.

There ought to be a way to show a short movie with the world without letting strangers get access to my main e-mail account, which is linked in various ways to my credit cards and my life savings.

Every few months I read in the newspaper that another organization has been hacked. It worries me.

think of your new address as the one to use on sites where you have to sign up for a newsletter, etc.

I keep one email a/c for personal financial affairs which I only open on one scrupulously maintained security safeguarded PC;
[password commited to memory and not stored on any computer]

but create as many secondary and disposable emails as required for multivarious websites demanding membership for access.

All fake IDs / passes and dodgy email addresses are kept listed on a word Doc
if ever I might need to use them again.

It seems to work safely for me so far....

Unfortunately, the new google account has blocked access to my previous account. These people are amazing! Can't they envision more than one person using a particular computer?

eek!

when you signed into your new account, did you uncheck the Stay Signed In box? If not shut down (not log off) then open gmail again & uncheck so you can open both accounts.
