Hi Mudcat folks,I'd be most grateful if you could help me find the remaining lyrics to this British comic music hall song:

Chorus:
Aye, aye, aye,
Kippers a penny-a-pair
Bloaters three for tupence,
You can get them anywhere
The cheapest place to get 'em
Is down the Old Kent Road
And when you go by, you get a black eye
And a punch on top of the nose

Thank you GUEST. That's an interesting song that has 'kippers' and the 'Old Kent Road' in it but it's not the one I was looking for. Thank you anyway

It isn't the song in question, but Googling for "kippers a penny a pair" brings up an interesting article titled 'Awkins at 'Ome. Worth a read.

Thanks for that Joe. Like the article the song certainly has a Cockney feel. Thank you too GUEST for your persistence - it must be out there somewhere.

Just wondering if this thread should be retitled "Music hall song about Kippers" - so as to make clear it's not a song from the Kipper Family?!

Kitty

Subject: RE: Norf and Sarf - cockney songs

I have snatches of lyrics in my head but can't place the song:

"aye, aye, aye, kippers a penny-a-pair
(bloaters?) three for tupence, you can get them anywhere
the best place in London is down on donkey (row/road?)
and when you go by, you get a black eye and a punch on top of the nose".

Any help would be appreciated

Please e-mail me at joycealex@yahoo.com

Thanks.

These the words my Mum and Nan sang at Family parties and taught me I have passed them on to my Daughter and Granddaughter who is 15yrs old.
I am 70 now and never heard any more verses .Would love to know if there are.

Will you come to the Mission will you come,
bring your own cup and saucer and a bun.
Charlie Chaplin will be there
selling kippers, penny a pair
Will you come to the Mission will you come.

My dad, Alex Fitt, commented on here regarding this song before. Has anyone been able to discover the name of this mystery song? I've searched high and low all over the internet and this chat site has been the only thing that's come up.

Cheers,

Victoria

There are no titles in Kilgarriff with 'Kippers' as the first word in the title. If this is the chorus the title may have more to do with the substance of the verses. Can't really get much further without further info on what the song was about. There were hundreds of Coster songs and this looks like it may have been part of one of them. Where's Billy Weekes when you need him?

BL catalogue has 9 scores with kippers in the title. Promising ones are The Kippers and the Trippers by P. Sweeney & Kenneth Lyle, London : Francis, Day & Hunter, [1902] and Kippers and bloaters by Edward St Claire, ca1927, no publisher given (awaiting full catalogue).

No guarantee that it's either of them, but worth checking.

Mick

This is a traditional South London hymn which I remember from my childhood in the late 1950s.

Will you come to the mission?
Will you come, will you come?
For a hot cup of tea
And a bun, and a bun.

That's the whole hymn, at least as I was taught it.

Here a really neat cookbook which doesn't have anything to do with kippers @two for a penny. But it's interesting nevertheless.

GUEST, is your song to the tune 'Roll along covered wagon' from the 20s? it is used as a vehicle for all sorts of songs. We sang:

Will you come to the party, will you come?
Bring your own cup and saucer and a bun,
For _____ will be there, kissing ______ on a chair,
Will you come to the party will you come?

Hull 1950s but probably pre-war.

Our windup gramophone had a broken spring so we spun the 78s using a finger on the label. I'm reminded of 'Like the Big Pots Do' guess was the title. 'Always hold your kipper with one hand, not two and wave it while you're talking, like the big pots do'. Gracie Fields on our record though search says it's George Formby's song.
