http://stroudvoices.co.uk/canal

Basically when run on an iPhone 4s (WiFi) it did everything except recognise the <audio> tag. As a result the audio did not play and the track legnth was not read. All other JavaScript works as it does on faultlessly a range of browsers (not tried Safari on a PC or a Mac) Android Phone/Tab works properly.

So any kind Catters with Iphones &/or Win8 Phones willing to play the audio on the web page above and let me know what does work on what?

TIA

    Link fixed - Mr. Red had it http://stroudvoices/canal

On an iPhone 3G running iOS 5, I see "NaN:aN" beside each green audio widget, and they don't work.

"NaN:aN" is an indication the JavaScript cannot read the <audio> tag. So the iPhones don't see the HTML5 tag in question.

My only recourse it to try and make the Wordpress player work in the search engine. The author thinks I should be able to get it working - my first attempt gave me one stab and then kept the audio from the first search attempt. But I will try. The player I can use is on the regular pages (works everywhere AFAIK) -
The clips are grouped by the source location - not ideal but stories do wander from subject to subject at times and I prefer to keep the images in one place.

Many thanx

I will go and headscratch - I may be some time.

And if there are any ex-pat Strouders (Stroudies are "blow-ins"!) who have stories - I am constantly collecting. TIA

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1.1 Safari & Chrome, just stayed on the NaN:aN as did my iPad 1 iOS 5.1.1.

Windows 8.1 with Chrome, Firefox and IE. Same results with each browser. Got the NaN:aN until everything was fully loaded then worked like a charm.

Great site Mr. Red.

Thanx Max

iPhone - HTML5 - apparently does not load the MP3 until you click on the button to save bandwidth on phones. This is something I found on the specific subject. But it needs a bit more instruction. viz:

function loadPlayer() {
var audioPlayer = new Audio();
audioPlayer.controls="controls";
audioPlayer.src="instructions.mp3";
document.getElementById("player").appendChild(audioPlayer);
}

If anyone would like to try (on an iPhone/iPad) by clicking on the hyperlink on this page latest version with JavaScript above Pretty Please. It only plays one track. All I need is to know it makes a reasonable sound.
TIA

Thanx folks. It looks like I have cracked the iPhone anomally.

The website has 235 clips (and counting). There are a lot of stories out there that I forgo because I want it to be geographically specific.

The search engine will now be migrated to include the iPhone work-around. Not as compact but more universal. I can test Opera myself - plan C5.

Thanx. That confirms all. The link at the top is the one I am trying to correct, but haven't yet. (JavaScript is complex & I have a lot of it!)
The one that plays is a testbed that proves I have found the solution. Just need to get down to the work. Thanx again.

Still work to do. It might be a latency problem. There is only so much I can do if Apple have a policy of only nodding in the direction of compatible standards.

I have two friends with iPhones, but all they can do is prove one way or another. No debug facility even if they let me & I was aux fais with iPhones. There are websites that purport to test your website for iPhones but they rely heavily on the browser you use (in particular the <AUDIO> TAG), and the problem is with iPhone browsers not Computer Browsers per se.

Fri of Warwick FF I visited Leamington Spa and spoke to Jamie at Western Computer they are Apple Dealers exclusively. He is the one on the left of their picture.
He is a programming geek and he tried on iPhone, iPad and Mac for me. Thanx Jamie
It all worked (the link) on the test page, though the iPhone (probably a 5) was so slow it gave the impression of not working and caused us to press several times.
So I can deal with the latency with text warnings and now deal with the Opera browser (needs ogg instead of mp3).
Thanx for your co-operation.
Mudcat wins again.

Me again.
I have another near complete test page. This also needs proving on iPhones. All help gratefully received.

http://stroudvoices.co.uk/search18

Not finished, I hope to eventually prevent the auto-loading of tracks on phones to save on bandwidth for phone users as this is (effectively) money spent.

I have left the file-type detection in for now, so you can see what browsers play what files. IE doesn't support WAV curiously!

TIA

Windows 8:
"search18" shows below menu bar: doesn't make much sense, mostly harmless.
"no display" on button on LHS doesn't make much sense: this becomes a listing of next data display. The text on the button needs polishing.
four lines showing status notes on sound file types visible below data lines need removal.
Huge blank space below this to bottom of page needs removal.

any chance of sending a screen shot/photo ? Or is that not possible from a Windows phone/tab? first contact via contact page if poss.
The main problem is what I can't see. The text and process is easy to change because I can see it.
The main focus up to now was getting iPhones to play. Then I will try to delay loading of tracks to save the surfers' bandwidth.
"no display" just means there is nothing to display. The button can easily show blank or maybe hidden until needed.
The status lines are proof of concept. They will go.
Blank space is just not controlled programatically - yet. It has t accommodate 5 tracks each with a photo and is set outside the JavaScript. Hmm I may be sometime.....
Search 18 is Wordpress doings, but probably can be tailored to be more instructive or removed (done - do above tomorrow).

Any blackberry users out there?

Don't have any useful commentary re lay-out, buttons or appearance. Too new to smart phones and not accustomed yet to the tiny screen, much less a touch screen.

Hi,
Both "search20" and "search 18" worked as expected on iPhone 4 (not 4s) / iOS 7.1.2 / Chrome & Safari / connected over 3G.

There is an understandable short delay before the audio is heard, I suppose that there's not a lot you can do about that.

Subject: RE: Tech: website - needs iPhone/Win8 testing pls
From: Mr Red

I have altered the code so that it re-sizes the window height to reflect the actual content at the time. I said I might be some time, and boy was it contorted. And the display button is blank until there is something to display.

The buttons that did not play have no tracks assigned (to save on bandwidth and speed. next task is detecting mobile phones and not pre-loading until the surfer presses. Maybe with an option button to ignore that and waste bandwidth. Not sure if I will address Opera and ogg files as I am up to 250 stories and counting (imagine the logistics!). Search page is nearly there.

The delay in playing of tracks is a function of the network. Not much I can do there.

It is near enough to risk making search by subject code identical.

Thanks 4 all your help.
Off to Bromyard Folk Festival tomorrow. Brain needs a rest.

OK ... much better this time...than the previous posting

There IS a display...and a search for the year "dog" returns one result.

In previous experience an audio-file would play.

Unfortunately, no audio plays...using android.

Keep at it...Don't get discouraged. This is a valuable resource in the making.

I ain't discouraged.
It werks purrrrfectly on my Handroid Samsung S3 mini on Wifi, on Chrome & "Internet"
The size of the buttons could be bigger but then compared to the Wordpress Add-On (that wouldn't help me with the search facility) it is still better and I am in control! Button the other hand......

The other thing I noticed was the latency. It can, but not always take a short while to respond, but then so does Wordpress. I am in the hands of Google, the internet, and a million phone configurations.

And more good news, I have re-figured the IFRAME (techie jargon for page subdivision) to be "responsive" - it tries to size itself for the best viewing. Be it browser window size or phone orientation. Best in landscape. That also werks, but there are limits!

Probably done programming for a while.
I finally added responsiveness to the which and button sizes so they grow with smaller screens. Easier to touch.

And changed the display of track length so it says "wait" until the track has loaded. SHould address the latency problem with phone networks and internet generally.

Thanks 4 all your considerations.

http://stroudvoices.co.uk/search-by-subject is the proper page now fully loaded with the latest s/w.

As the darker months of fall and winter roll through ... perhaps, your motivation will renew. I am sure it will. There are probably a couple more tales to tell.

Your continual refinement is a "template" many can use. does the UK have an archive like the LOC "Wayback Machine?"

I don't do crosswords, I program computers. Come to think of it, cross words figure pretty heavily.
