Subject: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Joe Offer Date: 01 May 14 - 09:53 PM A Mudcatter posted a message on my Facebook wall saying "Hi, Joe, how's things?" Well, things is good. But I got a similar message from another friend and she says she didn't send it. So, I'm wondering if the Mudcatter's Facebook account has been hijacked. Has anybody encountered this? How do you handle it? I replied to the Mudcatter by e-mail, not my Facebook. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Jeri Date: 01 May 14 - 10:19 PM This happened to at least two of my friends. Someone takes out an account pretending to be them. The person they're spoofing likely hasn't set privacy settings so only friends can see their friends, or gets access some other way. They then contact those friends and request friendship. If I'm one of the people they want to friend, I notice someone who's already my friend wants to be my friend, and post a message on the real person's wall letting them AND their friends know. Then I report the fake friend and block them. The person who's targeted also needs to tell Facebook in order to get the fake account removed, and it doesn't hurt if other of their friends report them. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Jeri Date: 01 May 14 - 10:26 PM Then again, I only see one "How's things" message on your wall, so maybe Facebook already zapped the fake? If that's the only message and the one you're talking about, the person should change her password. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 01 May 14 - 10:30 PM It happens. Sincerely, Gargoyle Over the course of the last decade someone "Joe Offer" has attempted to "friend" on four of my accounts.... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Joe Offer Date: 12 May 20 - 02:36 AM A Mudcat friend sent me a Facebook Messenger message saying the previous message from him was hacked, and should be deleted. How can I delete a single message on Facebook Messenger, without destroying all the helpful messages he had sent me? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: FreddyHeadey Date: 12 May 20 - 05:45 AM To remove a single message on Messenger With the Messenger app open and a friend selected On my android tablet if I tap and hold the message I get a popup menu at the bottom of the screen with Copy Forward Remove options. Clicking 'Remove' brings up a confirmation message along the lines of 'This message will be removed for you, other members will still be able to see it' - |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 May 20 - 01:20 PM I concur with Jeri - you probably received a message from a spoofed account. Go into your Facebook settings and be sure that no one can see who your friends are, and this is not as likely to happen in the future. I also have my photos locked down so only friends can see them, and most settings are determined to keep the troll who was such a problem 8-10 years ago from harvesting any information to load into a spoofed account. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Jeri Date: 12 May 20 - 02:18 PM I wrote my post 6 years ago, so doesn't help with what Joe posted about. Freddy probably nailed it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Joe Offer Date: 12 May 20 - 05:10 PM It was difficult to delete a single message on my phone, but very easy on my computer. My wife wants me to show her how to do all sorts of fancy things, but she always wants to use her phone and refuses to learn how to use a computer. Drives me crazy. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 May 20 - 11:23 PM I can't delete messenger messages using the phone, I have to do it on the computer, that is correct. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Facebook Hacking??? From: Mr Red Date: 13 May 20 - 04:03 AM FWIW uninstalling Fakebook messenger on an Android phone is complicated. You have to delete permissions after uninstalling messenger. Which has to be installed on phones if you want to message. They insist. On a PC messages seem to handled OK in a browser. Convenience for phone use would be the excuse, but it allows them to harvest more personal data. |
