In recent days, the list of threads on the forum has been quite short. As I write, there are 18 active threads above the line. That's one less than there are in BS. What's going on?

Hopefully, the downers are off expressing their grief in music as opposed to taking it out on each other, and putting time in in rehearsal. We should expect some fine music later this summer.

For many of us, spring is truly here. It's time to garden, to picnic, to birdwatch and travel. It's also a big time for weddings and graduations. We're busy.

Today is J.S. Bach's birthday, and our town had non-stop Bach performances from 2 pm till 7:30. A LOT of catters were probably out celebrating Bach.

Fascist moderators tend to delete threads. They want you to talk about dogs and pie, not about Obama funding the fascist coup in the Ukraine. But then they also kill their children with vaccines, so whattayougonnado?

It doesn't take much crap to spoil the ambiance of an online forum. I recently made my very first post here and was welcomed with rudeness and condescension. Quite the turnoff.

It is sad to see the forum dwindling.
We who have been here years are not put off by the slowness and down-time, but we too are dwindling.

No-one trying it out would persevere when it is very slow or not working at all.

I also think that people are put off by the mindless abuse that often replaces discussion these days.

Swings and roundabouts? The archival value of the 'cat seems to be coming through more and more in recent months. I've had several instances of people approaching me saying they've been researching songs and have ended up on Mudcat (which they'd not heard of) - where they recognised my name, amongst others! So all our backhanders to Google must be paying off..

If the Cat has had some down time then that may be the reason. The default is only to show a day I think so if the Cat was down for 24 hours there might be nothing showing...

Refresh with a longer setting and see what happens

I think most things have been discussed to death, and it's not often something new crops up. We must be overdue for a re-cycling of the "What is Folk?" or "Should we learn our words" debate soon though.

I know from quite a few personal conversations with various friends that the flaming here truly does alienate them from the whole site - which is a pity, because not every thread is like that. All you have to do is pick & choose. So out goes the baby with the bathwater, and I hope the baby won't freeze to death in the process.

There is huge value here, and it runs very deep, very wide. That's the Mudcat I love. I agree that the abstract, unanswerable arguments have been debated to death and will never resolve. But there's so much more to focus on than pushing those knackered warhorses through yet another exhausting lap.

Also, so many people are dying - at our median age, the grim reaper starts to claim his due (in real life too). And they're not being replaced by the young ones. Maybe Mudcat's more measured pace fails to attract them.

I don't just mean "measured pace" as a euphemism for the site's slowness (which is a discouragement when you're in a hurry or just feeling impatient - and a hanging screen does bring that out in folks). I mean the whole idea of discourse, built up over time, creating an enriching mix. That whole style of communication seems to be fading out like the 18th-century coffeehouses, once gathering places for some of the most exciting minds of their day.

Kids tend to converse in flashbytes now, everything instant with lots of visual input, all based on the moment - Snapchat is the perfect example, with its disappearing images. And young blood is needed to replenish the old, here and everywhere else.

I'm not criticising the youth - just that their approach is so different. Everything is of its time, I suppose. But it makes me sad.

I fear that trolling and the circulatory nature of both subjects and arguments (Will puts it most succinctly) might be the cause - that and the ever present boredom (at least to me) of being drawn into some sort of Fascist/Communist debate whilst entering what is a superficially innocent thread.
Having said that, surely it is not beyond the wit of man/woman to come up with some original topics or even some radical slants on the tired old chestnuts.
Another forum (covering a totally different interest that I follow) is suffering from the same malady. Interestingly the average age of the contributors and partakers of this eccentric hobby is similar to that of the attendees of the average folk club. Facebook seems to have taken over for the younger members but doesn't seem to offer quite the same in-depth discussion and can quite quickly erupt into fiery confrontations...mind you we appear to do that quite well ourselves.

I think a LOT of UK members will have been folking hard from the 2nd to now - it being a bonk holiday weak end - and pretty well ALL the south east UK folkies will have been at Sweeps fest. Indeed many morrisers will have had a blank Thursday as well - up at about 0430 to dance in the dawn/the May at about 0530 - then back to bed!

Not enough threads denouncing smoking.
Too many posts saying if you have been here longer than some, you should be respected for your less savoury views.
Not enough threads pointing and laughing at pious people.
Too many threads expressing why the person posting doesn't like sections of society.

Good news! Apart from one TC post on this thread, all the above can be found below the line. You really don't need to have your sensibility offended if you don't want to.

Me? I like to shout at them. The best part is, they applaud your songs in real life because they are so far up their own arse they don't realise you mean them.

In reality, I love Mudcat for looking up old mates and recalling songs you forget existed. So let's stop bloody moaning and enjoy.

Some of us who come to chat, to discuss matters of common interest are discouraged by the the serial pests.
How ironic that Keith A of Hertford should be lamenting the absentees.
The DT is what drew me here long ago, and remains a wonderful resource.

Threads remain active--that is alive and on the screen--for 24 hours. Start a thread on May 1, 2014 @ 10:23 AM and on May 2, 2014 at 10:23 AM it will disappear from view if no one has posted to it. HOWever, if you set the search for three days instead of one at 10:24, there it will be.

I don't get on Mudcat as often as I used to.
Part of this is due to not having as easy access to the house computers as I at one time had - kids doing homework and other things.
I often use an Android tablet, and Mudcat does not display well in the browser. Text size within a thread can vary from very large to excessively small, I am not sure why, but it makes it difficult to read. As a result, when on the Android, it is easier to dip into facebook rather than try to wade into the Mud at Mudcat.
Quack!

"I have found that the negative threads, trolling, name calling... are more often in the posts below the line, in the BS section of the forum."

Which is precisely the point of the BS section which, incidentally, is where this thread should be.

With one or two obvious exceptions, I don't believe that UK members are any more arrogant, snide, unpleasant, obnoxious (or the pejorative of your choice) than those on the Western side of the pond.
