And achmelvich: I'm thrilled to hear you mention The Eels. Not much better therapy songs (both in terms of the affliction and the cure) than those great songs of Mark Oliver Everett. And I'll definitely give a listen to Heijira by Joni Mitchell. I do have lots of Joni Mitchell I'll be using for various shows.

And lefthanded guitar....thanks for suggesting The Farmer's Song. That particular line of someone giving back in......a great one for my "Giving Back" episode. (Wish I'd thought of it before I recorded by programs on "The Give and Take of Giving and Taking".

If it's not too late for it to be useful, I'd like to suggest another possible source of relevant songs. There's a double-LP re-release on CD titled "Songs of Couch and Consultation / Life is Just a Bed of Neuroses". The description on Amazon says this:

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away...the cults of psychoanalysis and psycho-babble were just a gleam in some misfits eye. Here, those pseudo-sciences are lampooned to delirious effect. The teaming of folk-cabaret chanteuse Katie Lee with lyricist Bud Freeman and composer Leon Pober resulted in the 1957 satirical masterpiece Songs Of Couch And Consultation. Numbers like Repressed Hostility Blues and The Will To Fail have, if anything, gained more traction in today's over-analyzed, over-medicated world. during a hospital stay i found beth orton, bert jansch, eels and especially john martyn really helpful. obviously not canadian but far out when on the strong painkilllers. small hours, head and heart etc just trippy anyway - just what is needed when you want to escape this world and all its hideousness. gillian welch - i dream a highway -meanders on beautifully forever and if you insist on canadian - hejira is one long, soothing and interesting ride.
but if therapy is what you need - let a lovely and quiet spot in the countryside choose you and just sit there.

war trauma..best one is Ich Hatte Einen Komaraden...old German song. Has been translated into several languages. I would be careful with Eric Bogle songs..they have a zinger that says oh you should have known better..I also love the boys of the old brigade.    Tenting tonight ont he old campground. when johnny comes marching home.

I've always had trouble w. 'focus'.......being the extreme 'eclectic'. Lots of potential target audiences---therapists who want to expand the way they think about issues, potential clients who want to explore new ways of looking at things, people interested in exploring different music, etc.

I'd be interested in knowing who you think would be the best 'target' for such a show, then I could start thinking about such an audience as I put together future shows.

Thanks HiLo and Henry P. Pete Morton's Another Train is a poignant song about the joys of 'moving on' rather than staying trapped in regrets----definitely a good therapy song that I'll probably use sometime (even though he's not Canadian).

And yes......I like the McGarrigles and have a few of their songs.   And Laurs Smith's "I Didn't Dream" is an amazing song about dealing with a loved one with alzheimers.

OK.....Janie asked me to let you know when the Musical Therapy PRogram is ready to launch.

I have about 8 episodes in the can and I'm working on more......and this Sunday, 9A.M. Pacific Time is when the first episode airs on our on-line station.

Larry Radio guy, I composed the song in 2006. It was performed with a trio called Ezeduzit to which I belonged. It was never recorded as the trio disbanded and I have not produced any solo efforts. Thanks for your interest.

I just want to thank all of you who have given me such great ideas for music for my radio program.....particularly the Canadian songs I was struggling to find.

Thanks to your input, I found about another 20 songs that I'll be using for various shows.   Even Mary Ellen Carter (I changed my mind on that one.....it's a great one related to many different topics; it's even a 'gratitude' song).

I've completed scripting 6 episodes already----three on the topic of "What is Therapy", and 3 episodes called "The Give and Take of Giving and Taking-----Codependency".   I found lots of great songs for those episodes.

The program will being on peachcityradio.org June 15 at 9A.M. with various repetitions, and on the following Wednesday will be loaded into our 'on demand' stream so you can listen whenever.

We are working on getting a full FM broadcast license as well.

Janie requested that I bring this thread back when the first program is available........so I'll do that, maybe for the first couple.

Then, as I start doing other topics and begin to look for songs related to them, I may put out another call to Mudcat.

You'll notice that in my first 6 programs, a lot of the songs you folks suggested are on it.....and others will be on future episodes.

Thanks again.    I suspect mudcatters will find this show quite interesting-----much more so than my previous show (which is ending June 8) called Larry Saidman's Top 200 Albums of All Time.

I can see that, Larry, re: "...Lions...." though I had not thought of it in that way before. To me, it speaks of spirituality, trust and acceptance, cognitive restructuring and mindfulness. A client well into work recovering from trauma first brought this particular song to my attention.

For victims of clerical abuse there is a great one by a newfoundlander..i also have one about mount cashel orphanage and one about native children in boarding school but i am an american as are people from chile, greenland, pei, guatamala and..many other places.

Check ojt kellaghan of course and also bill gallagher..

Economic loss which drives so many problems..no more fish no fishermen..lots of other fishing stuff..

On Marie-Lynn Hammond's album "Hoofbeats", released in 2013, there is a song "Emily Flies" which she describes as follows:

In answer to Janie's question: The show begins....and will run indefinitely at first on stream and on our 'on demand programming' link where you can hear them whenever you want.   Just go to peachcityradio.org.   (Right now I'm just finishing up a series of programs called "Larry Saidman's Top 200 Albums Of All Time"). The Musical Therapy program is slated to start June 15.

I've found some great Canadian songs I'll be using thanks to all of you who responded. (and keep those posts coming!).

Thanks Janie for the Joni Mitchell suggestions. I'll use For THe Roses and The Arrangment (for the "Love or Money" episode), For Free (MIndfulness), Morning Morgantown (Serenity), and Willie (for the one I'm working on now on codependency). Also Circle Game (Life's Journey, Surviving Childhood episodes).

As well, Love Doesn't Hurt by Lynn Miles is great for the one on Transforming Abusive Relationships. And another one of hers called Three Chords and The Truth is for the "Search for Meaning" episode.

(Of the non-Canadian ones, that one Paul Thorn song, I Have A Good Day Every Now and Then is a great 'Positive Psychology' song.

Howard, I looked at the song titles and lyrics for the James Gordon cd. Wow! I'm about to order the cd..there's one about someone with social anxiety facing it by becoming an actor (based on a true story), there's one about conquering the stigma of mental illness, and so many more.   Thanks for suggesting that one.

Your suggestions are appreciated.   I think i have enough now for the co-dependency program (although if you find a dynamite one I don't have, I can add it).

But any other therapeutic themes......they can be sad and intense, or fun and lively......but it's important that there be a spark of hope in each of them....or at least a sense of feeling 'understood'.

Not for this current show you mention, and not Canadian, but take a listen for future shows to the music and songwriting of Mary Gauthier and Paul Thorn. Thorn is somewhat outrageous but often very therapeutic. Honest, thoughtful, and real.
