Heads up, Getaway Folks! Planning for the 2014 FSGW Getaway is already underway, and the Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), and longtime Getaway-goer Kathie Mack -- is ready for your ideas!

This year's Getaway -- our 50th! -- will be held September 26-29 at West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the same place we've been for the last several years, and it's a beautiful spot.

If you'd like more information about the Getaway, visit www.fsgw.org, scroll down a bit, and click on "Getaway" in the left-hand column. Complete, up-to-date information -- including an application form -- will be available on the FSGW site soon. Or you can put "Getaway" into the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2-3 years, and you'll get more commentary than anyone could reasonably read.

We have a fine lineup of Special Guests this year. LARRY HANKS and DEBORAH ROBINS (who couldn't make it last year because of a last-minute medical emergency) will be here from the West Coast with songs of cowboys and more. ED TRICKETT's gentle approach and varied repertoire are sure to please. SARA GREY, back again from across the Pond, will bring her banjo and lots of songs. CAROLINE PATON of Folk-Legacy Records will enchant us all with ballads and much more. Multi-instrumentalist BOB ZENTZ and his partner JEANNE McDOUGALL will be joining us from Tidewater Virginia. We're eager to meet traditional Irish singer MAI HERNON and her guitarist husband, MICK McEVILLEY. Last, but definitely not least, our old friend HEATHER WOOD is sure to entertain. All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops.

We are now starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but that's hard to do until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do. So: please tell us if you plan to come, and what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only 2 days, after all, so not everything can make the final cut), we do promise to consider all ideas. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me.

The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now!

Amazing. Got up with Dani last night for pizza and wine and a good visit, and one of the first things she said was "I'm thinking and planning about this year's Getaway." Great minds (Dani and all y'all, not mine,) think alike!

Gives such a good idea of how much planning, care, concern and commitment a dedicated small organization, and especially an even more committed small group of folks within that organization give to have made the Getaway happen for approaching 50 years.

Hope there are younger ones in sufficient numbers to pick up the mantel so that the Getaway celebrates 100 years of people devoted to people making music and raising their voices together, just for the sake of it, shall continue and be renewed.

It's MY local festival, Amos, despite your sneering at it. It's always been the last weekend in September. I've only ever missed one in its history, and that was to go to the Getaway a couple(?) years ago. It's the first year Tom Hall, who was one of the organizers, won't be there because he died in November.

I'm not going to miss it.

We're sorry about the conflict, but it can't be helped. There are several folks we'd love to have at the Getaway who will be at Portsmouth instead. We have to plan around the camp's availability and the Jewish holidays. Back to first weekend in October for 2015!

OK gang, Tawmmie and I are going to be there this year. I thought about changing my name to Florida Mike, but it just didn't have the same flair. It will be good to see you all again and share songs with everybody. I'd also like to do one of those mini concerts if you can squeeze me in somewhere. Being retired has been a blast. I've been playing the folk festival circuit in Florida now for the past 4 years and have developed a goodly number of fans. I've got some new songs, but no new CD. See you in September.

All signed up - although when I joined FSGW it said I had joined for the year beginning 7/19/12. You might pass on to whoever runs the registration page that the statement that "it's cheaper for two or more if you join" isn't really true...$45 membership plus $206 twice is $5 more than two non-member registrations @ $226 each. Ah well - you are worthy of support.

We have even learned a new song that comes complete with the obligatory hanging and a nifty guitar break copped (not very eptly) from Doc Watson.

It's really kinda shocking just how much of my repertoire, going back to childhood, focuses on jealousy, greed, vice, desperation, and the legal consequences thereof ...

Thanks, maeve, for bringing up the Silent Auction. Yes Folks, if you are coming, please bring an item to place in the Silent Auction, and some cash or a checkbook for a winning bid on some treasure you find being offered in the auction.

All proceeds from the auction go toward the FSGW Scholarship fund - More people than you might realize have been able to attend the Getaway due to help from the scholarship fund - me included in leaner years.

Let's face it, we are an older bunch, and a lot of folks who attend are living on limited retirement incomes, plus we folkies are generally notorious for spending our lives working at what we love and gives meaning and gives back to the community rather than working for the big bucks. So as modest as the cost of the Getaway is compared to most 3 day weekend retreats to nirvana, it is still a stretch for a fair number of people.

One caveat - space for the auction is limited, so please bring something, but please don't bring a huge number of items or all the contents in the floor of your back bedroom closet, unsorted, in poor repair or ready for the trash, dust-bunnies intact:>)

As truly magical as the experience of the Getaway is for so many of us, takes much more than magic for the Getaway to happen each year. Heart felt gratitude to all of the people with the FSGW who contribute their time and talents, be that contribution an hour, or be it days, weeks or months each year to make the Getaway happen.

It warrants repeating. My deepest gratitude. I am pretty confident I speak for many others who may not check in often enough to see these threads.

at the moment I worry the Big caldera volcano Bárðarbunga , its getting
started , the Ice is melding down 23 mtr now and its going 80 cm pr day
5.3 earthquake there in mid day now , and there has been many five O ´s earthquakes there lately ....I am in the capital right now I am going home to the East of Iceland in another 15 day s ...if am lucky ..

It's still early in the week, but the weather is looking good so far. Fair, highs in the mid to upper seventies and nights in the low 60's!

Eagerly awaiting what has become, not only a magic weekend of shared music, but also a family reunion! And as with all such reunions, will miss many who can't make it this year, including some who have never been able to come. Y'all will all be there in many of our hearts and minds!
