Subject: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 May 14 - 03:13 PM Sorry I'm late with this announcement (again), but you SHOULD have it figured out by now that it's the third Saturday of the month.... I was out of town for the weekend, got home late Monday, and spent yesterday recovering from too much FUN (musical, of course). So. Here 'tis. Fanfare, if you please! This Saturday, May 17, 2014, is our monthly Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Ballad Singaround from 3:30 until 7:30 PM. The location is, of course, The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. See you there! Linn |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 14 May 14 - 03:35 PM glad you had some musical fun this weekend too far for us, but hope to make it to your next Shanty Festival. coming back from NEFFA we got to see little Zinnia Souza at the Dog Bar... and her besotted parents... :D LOL... she's a cutie and unflappable from what we saw... |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 May 14 - 04:22 PM I gave Peter and Audi a little bit of baby poop this weekend...Zinnia's going on three months old and not singing yet! Seems to have some problems in the lyrics department. What gives? I thought for sure they'd be a trio by now...;-) Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival will be September 27th and 28th this year. Concert lineup is Andy Kenna from Liverpool, London Julie, and a memorial that hasn't been planned yet for Tom and for Bob Webb. Also confirmed for the festival are John Roberts, Cliff Haslam, Dave Peloquin, as well as our usual local mainstays of the festival. Linn |

Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 18 May 14 - 11:47 AM I was there, but it seemed sparse. Pre-memorial day, beautiful-day tourists and UNH Commencement made parking fun. My voice was going and my throat hurt and I was hungry, but we had an absentee wait-person. I don't know if she asked anybody at the table if they wanted anything while I was there, and some folks walked up to the bar to order. Bartender got my tip. I was also freezing since they had the air on. I went outside to warm up around 5-something and just kept going. I have a severe lack of energy these days, anyway. Probably need to keep taking allergy pills for a bit. And learn some new songs. Dianne brought her young granddaughter, who has a lovely voice...and is not shy, which is great! |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 May 14 - 03:11 PM It rained in the morning, but by mid day, the sun was out brightly, the sky was radiant blue, the temperature was comfortable and it was, I think, the first REALLY NICE weekend day after a long winter and delayed and half-hearted spring. Even the Press Room regulars who hang out around the bar weren't there...probably enjoying the weather outside. But Don Hale made it from way down south...in Massachusetts, and Jeri was there for awhile, and Hutch (Emery Hutchins), Charlie Ipcar and Judy Barrows from mid-coast Maine, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson from the Boston area, and Justine Donovan and Steve Smith came in later in the afternoon. Dianne Lavoie was in early with her granddaughter Annalie and stayed long enough to sing a few songs and Annalie made not only her Press Room debut, but it was the first time she'd sung solo in front of strangers (and, you'll have to admit, we're pretty strange...). Gail Didericksen and her sister came in to listen and stayed most of the session. By the way, Jeri, Lonny came in later and kept us from dying of thirst. We wrapped up about 15 minutes early when Lonny asked (for Tristan) if we could because there was overflow from a wedding party upstairs and they needed more table space. Not that many voices, but we had a pretty full complement of songs... 1. Whiskey-O, Johnny-O - Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) 2. Good Reuben James - Emery Hutchins 3. Black Bird, Get Up - Jeri 4. Rosabella - Don Hale 5. Three Drunken Maidens - Linn Schulz (Bat Goddess) 6. How Can I Keep From Singing - Annalie (a different version than we are familiar with) 7. All for Me Grog - Dianne Lavoie 8. Dead Dog Cider - Charlie 9. South Australia - Hutch 10. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn 11. Fire Marengo - Jeri 12. Bay of Biscay - Linn & Jeri 13. Girls Around Cape Horn - Don 14. The Rogue Time Police - Charlie 15. Banks of Sicily - Hutch 16. Flash Company - Linn 17. Paddy West - Don 18. Race of Long Ago - Linn 19. The Day of the Little Ships - Charlie 20. West Indies Blues - Hutch & Charlie 21. Jamestown Homeward Bound - Don 22. A Shanty In Old Shanty Town [Jerry Bryant] - Linn 23. Neptune's Daughter - Charlie 24. Maid of Amsterdam - Linn 25. Shawnee Town - Hutch 26. Stormalong, Stormy, Stormalong - Charlie 27. Goodnight Ladies - Judy Barrows 28. Ida Lewis - Justine Donovan 29. Saltpetre Shanty - Don 30. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth - Linn 31. Drink to the Men Who've Gone Ashore - Charlie 32. Fire Down Below - Justine ("Fetch a bucket of water, girls" version) 33. Plum Island National Anthem - Linn (written by Richard Johnson) 34. Why Should I Marry? - Linn (Richard Johnson song on the flip side of above) 35. Yangtze River - Charlie 36. History Man - Judy 37. a quick chorus of "Gone to the Dogs" - Linn 38. Liverpool Lullaby - Linn (in honor of Stan Kelly's passing, and for Mother's Day last weekend) 39. I'm Going to Kill My Cat - Linn (parody -- and don't let Rufus and Sabine know I sang this!!!) 40. A Cowardly Act - Charlie 41. Down Below - Linn 42. Living In Braintree With You In Methuen Is Almost Like Living In Lowell - Linn (as you can see, things deteriorated as we dove into the deep end of low puns) 43. Willie Went To Sea - Judy 44. Big Bow Wow - Don 45. Nelson's Prayer - Don and Company As usual, please let me know of additions or corrections. Linn |

Judy and I certainly had a fine time and the song list looks fine. For those who use Facebook, I'm pasted an album of photos of the session on my own page, the Pressroom and Clan page, and on the Gloucester Gang page. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |

Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 21 May 14 - 09:28 PM I'm currently reading J. Courtney Sullivan's novel Maine. The Press Room in Portsmouth got a mention as characters stopped there for a meal on their trip north from MA! |
Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 May 14 - 11:21 AM Oops. Dianne, I just realized I haven't done that. Will correct immediately! Went to see two ecology-based films last night at the Portsmouth library last night -- "Volunteer" (with discussion with the film maker after) and a short film on North Atlantic Right whales by a 16-year-old film maker. When I left the library it was foggy...with a salt tang. (Hey, it's Portsmouth.) So I decided to go for a ride along the Piscataqua to Newcastle. Nice foggy haloed lights at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as I drove down the river. When I got to the Coast Guard station, I turned in and took the roads closest to the river, past the yacht club, back to Portsmouth. Lovely detour! And the fog was gone by the time I hit the traffic circle heading out of town. Linn |
