Subject: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: GUEST Date: 19 May 14 - 09:36 AM Just realized that apart from the four verses in DT, there are additional verses that Tom Paxton occasionally sang in concerts, one is a verse in French, another one has lines that goes like "Turn to my friend, he's the same in the end, to wind up for a bottle of wine". Do anybody have any idea? Thanks |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Apr 16 - 05:28 PM These are the verses we have in the Digital Tradition. Any corrections, any additional verses? BOTTLE OF WINE (Tom Paxton) Ramblin' around this dirty old town Singin' for nickels and dimes Times getting rough I ain't got enough To buy me a bottle of wine Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine When you gonna let me get sober Leave me along, let me go home I wann'a go back and start over Little hotel, older than Hell Cold and as dark as a mine Blanket so thin, I lie there and grin Buy me little bottle of wine CHORUS Aches in my head, bugs in my bed Pants so old that they shine Out on the street, tell the people I meet Won'ch buy me a bottle of wine CHORUS Teacher must teach, and the preacher must preach Miner must dig in the mine I ride the rods, trusting in God And hugging my bottle of wine CHORUS ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright United Artists Co, Inc. sung by Paxton on Ain't That News @drink @bum filename[ BOTLWINE DC |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 30 Apr 16 - 07:05 PM Sorry for the deviation, but I love this song and have a great memory of Tom Paxton singing it at Glasgow's Celtic Connections festival in a January quite a few years ago. Anyway, we were all sat in a large venue in what seems to be recognised as a 'cabaret style' setting -- seats and round tables -- and suffered through an unnecessary support act for the first half. And finally Tom came on after the interval and (without words) broke into a descending guitar intro -- bom, bom, bom -- at which half the audience, all of a certain age, burst into the chorus "Bottle of wine etc.". This was the first time we had seen Tom in Glasgow in a goodly number of years and there were many who wanted to join in as would have been customary during his previous visits. But there was a sizeable section of the audience (younger than us) who turned around and gave us astonished/disapproving looks, as if to suggest that they had paid money to hear Tom and we were confounding their expectations… Needless to say, we continued to sing choruses as appropriate and enjoyed a superior night! And, to return to the thread, the verses Tom sang were as communicated by Joe. |
Subject: DT Correction: Bottle of Wine (Tom Paxton) From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Apr 16 - 07:41 PM Here's my transcription of "Bottle of Wine" from Paxton's 1965 album Ain't that News. There are a few differences from the DT version. BOTTLE OF WINE (Tom Paxton) CHORUS Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine When you gonna let me get sober Let (*leave) me alone, let me go home Let me go back and start over Ramblin' around this dirty old town Singin' for nickels and dimes Times getting tough (*rough), I ain't got enough To buy a little bottle of wine CHORUS Little hotel, older than hell Dark as the coal in a mine Blankets are thin, I lay there and grin 'Cause I got a little bottle of wine CHORUS Pain in my head and bugs in my bed Pants are so old that they shine Out on the street, tell the people I meet Won'tcha buy me a bottle of wine CHORUS Well, a preacher will teach, teacher will teach A miner will dig in the mine I ride the rods, trusting in God And hugging my bottle of wine CHORUS ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright United Artists Co, Inc. sung by Paxton on Ain't That News @drink @bum filename[ BOTLWINE DC *I have a 1965 Tom Paxton songbook from Oak Publications. It has the third line of the chorus as, "Leave me alone, let me go home." That's the way I learned the song. *The songbook has "times gettin' rough" in the first verse. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 30 Apr 16 - 07:45 PM You can find the additional verses here at this page. The French verses were written by Graeme Allwright. Also, if you're looking for chords for Tom Paxton songs you can visit this page. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Apr 16 - 08:00 PM I cope you don't mind my copy-pasting from your link, Jason. I'd like to have all the information together. From http://www.mydfz.com/Paxton/lyrics/bow.htm Tom sang a French verse to it in the Live in the UK album, which was written by French folksinger Graeme Allwright:
The following verse in the In the Orchard album: I went to the zoo for an hour or two, And the weather was pleasant and fine. While wanderin’ by a gorilla said, "Hi, Did you have a little bottle of wine?" The following verse in several live albums including Best of Friends and Live at McCabe's: While strugglin' through to meet the latest guru, I was the two-hundredth person in line. I turned to a friend and saw the same in the end. Why don't we get a little bottle of wine? for that last verse, what I hear on the McCabe's and Best of Friends album is: |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Tattie Bogle Date: 08 May 16 - 05:28 PM Yes, Joe, your 30th April version corresponds with what I know: "Tough", not rough, "Pain", not Aches, and "will", not must in final verse. One oddity is that everyone I know in Edinburgh who sings it, syncopates the word "sober": Tom sang it as SO....ber (long So, on the beat) - here they go "----so-ber" (pause before so and then 2 short syllables) No idea whose version they got that from, but ain't how the man sang it! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 16 - 09:14 PM Hi, Tattie - Yeah, I can't find that sort of syncopation on any Paxton recording. There are many different recordings of him doing this song (most of the live). I listened to several, and didn't find it. In the US, I often hear people do what I think is that kind of syncopation, but only on the last word of the last chorus, "O-ver." -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 09 May 16 - 01:03 PM Joe/Tattie, That's some interesting detail. I just listened to several recordings of the song. In early Paxton recording he sang both "get so---ber" and "start o--ver", but in more recent recordings (2000's recordings) he would sing "sta---art over". He did not pause before "over", but sang "start" long. The hit version of the song, by the Fireballs, was done the same way Paxton did: "so---ber" and "o--ver". That is also how Doc Watson did it. So did Judy Collins. The earliest version with "sober" and "over" syncopated, that I can find, was by John Denver with The Mitchell Trio. It was from early 1967, not long after Paxton wrote the song. I think it can be found on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9ThYWdkpms. I also found a similar version by The Kingston Trio, but I don't know if it's earlier than Denver's version. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 10 May 16 - 03:06 AM The internet says Bottle Of Wine was on the Kingston Trio 1965 album, Stay Awhile. I haven't heard it, and don't know whether they do the syncopation. A comparative study of various versions is at http://compvid101.blogspot.com.au/2011/07/tom-paxtons-bottle-of-wine.html |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 16 - 03:26 AM Most astute, Gerry. Yes, it was the Kingston Trio that did that syncopation. Here's the recording from their 1965 Stay Awhile album: -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: GUEST,Senoufou Date: 10 May 16 - 06:51 AM Oh gosh, I remember Tom Paxton in Edinburgh in the sixties (can't recall the year or the venue!) We always sang 'sober' syncopated, and even gave a small clap just before the word. Don't know if Tom did that or we'd picked it up from elsewhere. Happy memories as a daft young student at Edinburgh Uni! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bottle of Wine additional verse From: Girl Friday Date: 16 May 16 - 02:34 PM The additional verse quoted here is not the one that I've heard Tom sing. So here's a fifth verse. I may have it right, not quite sure as it was a lo9ng time ago. Verse suggested by (I believe) Judy Collins Went to the zoo for an hour hor two Weather was sunny and fine And as I passed by, a gorilla said "Hi, Won't you buy me a bottle of wine." |
