Subject: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Jun 14 - 12:22 PM No matter what broadside I select, I get that X in a box and can't bring up the copy. This is a problem that I never had before, and I have been looking at the ballads for years. What am I doing wrong? |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Noreen Date: 03 Jun 14 - 12:44 PM Is it the sort of "x in a box" that you can right click and choose "display image"? |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Jun 14 - 12:54 PM Noreen, I get a list of options, but none works to open the display. "Show Picture" is bold but it just re-does the X box. |

Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Jun 14 - 01:50 PM Thanks, SRS. This is the link I have used for a long time, so I haven't changed. http://bodley24.bodley.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/acwwweng/regsrch.pl Then to a specific sheet, for Johnny... Harding B25(993)... adding from acwww.eng/ballads/image.pl?ref=Harding+B+25(993)&id=09769.gif&seq=1&size=1 I hope I have copied that correctly! |

Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Jun 14 - 02:11 PM Yep, same problem. I have the browse/search in my favourites and I'm getting the same response. I'll email Mike H and see if he can help. |

Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Jun 14 - 02:15 PM I had mine in my Favorites as well. So it's not just me. |

Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Steve Gardham Date: 04 Jun 14 - 04:29 AM Q, if this is urgent I can send you a copy of B25 (993) later tonight (but don't tell Mike!)I'll need your email so if you want it pm me. |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Jun 14 - 11:24 AM No, Steve, I was just using it as an example for SRS, and it happened to be on the page I brought up. But thanks for your interest. What seems to be the problem? |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: GUEST Date: 04 Jun 14 - 05:20 PM WE are the problem, Q. The whole site has been revised so you need to replace your old version in your Favourites box with the new one. I've asked Mike if there are any new images on the new site and will let you know the answer. |

Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Ross Campbell Date: 04 Jun 14 - 07:52 PM Introduction to the Bodleian site here - links to Search, etc at the side - http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ballads/project.htm Ross |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 Jun 14 - 12:40 PM Ross, the result is still the X in a box. I think I found it- http://ballads.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/browse That gets me to a page "Browse by titles and first lines." On the left are subjects to browse (Subjects, Themes, etc.) the main section lets one browse by title, alphabetic selection possible. Lots more information, but the first impression is that the system is cumbersome. My first wish (not thought out) is that I could have got to the ballad quicker using the old index system. Example; select "a bachelor wants" The left side lists Themes, Dates, Subjects, Collections, etc. The main central part has boxes for the Editions- Example; Edition 2202, with notes, and a micro-image which will bring up the ballad when it is clicked. A print preview and print and Save options are allowed (my system) Steve, comments? |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 14 - 12:48 PM Will have a look. When the Bodl site first came out I spent days going through it sheet by sheet and printing off what I needed that was related to oral tradition so I rarely visit the site nowadays unless I'm checking a query for soe. |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 14 - 01:10 PM I can't see any problem with the new site. It looks different but I seem to be able to do the same things with the added bonus of Roud numbers relating pieces together. I take your point that you could get to the ballad quicker but 'swings and roundabouts' eh? I'll have a go at printing off because I used to get the odd problem over sheet sizes in the old system. |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Jun 14 - 01:40 PM Printing no problem. |
Subject: RE: Opening Bodleian Library Browse/Search From: Tootler Date: 06 Jun 14 - 04:32 PM I had a look just now. Ross Campbell's link takes you to the original page or a copy of it. The search there still works but the links to the scanned images are broken. Presumably this page is to be retired? Q's link looks fine to me. Click on "Home" at the top of the page and you get to the new home page: http://ballads.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ As Steve Gardham says, the new page looks fine; just different and in some ways better. I like the Theme menu on the left as I sometimes browse the site for songs on a specific theme which I either rewrite to reflect present times or just write a tune to fit the words. If you're looking for a specific song, there is a search box at the top of the page or there is a link to an advanced search page where you can conduct a more specific search. I've bookmarked it and will probably delete the link to the old page as it's clearly no longer much use. |
