Wot, says Mr Chad, -- no thread on the World Cup yet?

Well, then, inevitably, here goes.

To kick off [geddit?]: what the hell happened to Rooney last night? Couldn't do a thing right, poor guy. Missed a sitter, and two or three other quite easy shots; selfishly robbed Hailey of the ball without a by-your-leave when he was on a good run near goal and then missed with his own shot; kicked a corner straight off for a goal-kick, which nobody ever does except 11-year-old schoolboys ... I could go on. Pathetic performance. I repeat, what the hell happened to him?

a BTW: watching Greece lose to Colombia in the World Cup last night, I remarked to Emma that at least the Greeks would be sure to be philosophical in defeat -- esp as they had a player called Sokrates.

And,another BTW, going back many many years to my teaching days: I have happy memories of a mental image raised by an essay written by a boy in praise of his hero Bobby Charlton, who had done so much to help England win that sacred World Cup all those years ago. "Bobby Charlton has a brother Jack," he added at one point, " who also played for England in the WC."

My husband spent ages yesterday tying England flags to the front of our house, (It looks a bit naff, but I don't interfere.) He stayed up to watch the match and was a bit grumpy this morning so I assumed England hadn't done well. Rooney is his absolute hero, so I bet he was disappointed if the man played as you relate. He also intends to stay up to watch Cote d'Ivoire play in their matches. I go to bed at 10.30pm and sleep like a top until 6am. All these nocturnal excitements pass me by!

I thought they showed potential and enough flexibility in the squad to have answers from the bench. I agree with Alan Shearer though that they turn off during set pieces and see free kicks as a break from concentration, as the first Italy goal showed. The comeback showed the positive temperament Hodgson has instilled in them.

Ok, a more central role for Rooney would help. Welbeck can take the ball from defenders but not seeing much dispossession otherwise. Gerrard needs to come forward more, and Let's hope Henderson can cover.

The most positive sign for the future was Sterling.

They haven't made it easy for themselves but I took more positives than negatives from the match. Other than the ruddy score.

Thoroughly enjoying this World Cup to date. Plenty of goals for the armchair excitement, some bloody good players at the top of their game. I haven't seen any negative play yet, nobody playing the draw. Look at Spain as a good example, tried playing their way out. It didn't work but they didn't put ten men behind the ball.

Millions of people look forward to international bun fights such as The World Cup, and although FIFA needs huge reform, (Qatar isn't their finest hour) the misery merchants can be safely ignored and marginalised for a few weeks whilst normal people enjoy the spectacle.

Hi

I agree that there were several positives to take from the game. The game itself was quite enjoyable. No diving, acting etc etc and both teams trying to go forward.

As for individuals, Rooney did not have a great game but, he is not being played in his most effective position. Why pick your best striker and play him completely out of position??

We did not do enough in mid-field and I thought Henderson was invisible after one early shot on goal. Johnson can't tackle and his distribution is pathetic. Baines was overrun most of the time and his "famous" corners and free kicks were all wasted.

On a brighter note Sterling ran at the Italians and caused them problems although his final ball often wasn't good. Welbeck was industrious and his speed got him around a lot. Sturridge looked dangerous and will do better if we can give him more service.

We will need to play better if we are to progress further. On last night's performance I don't see them standing much chance against the likes of Germany, Holland, Argentina Brazil and the rest.

The Canadian men's national soccar team decided to support the Brazil boycot, not to play in the cuo games in Brazil...(yes, it was also because their seasons ranking was 110th - but, that was a mostly a peripheral issue).

Didn't Hodgson play him in his favoured club position in the second half though? Him and Gerrard seem to be in some sort of alternate realities when on the pitch, hardly linking up. Apart from his cross in to Sturridge (which was a belter) he looks so uncomfortable when playing for England.

Also, Glen Johnson looks positively pedestrian and lacking imagination when going forward.

Apart from that though, I thought England played positively and it was good to see some attacking football and positive substations.

I like Sterling too: he reminds me of Tony Daley in his heyday.

Unless Lizzie can help explain why we didn't bring on Ross Barkley a bit sooner, or move Rooney to a more centre forward position and have Gerrard feed him more, there's not much point in her contribution really.

I suppose one could point out that many of the participating countries have terrible problems with poverty, corruption, oppression and lack of human rights. But the point of a world sporting competition, I would have thought, is to put all that temporarily to one side and bring peoples together for a superb sportfest. This could influence nations to change by example and contact. I don't see how the football does much harm, and millions around the world are getting immense pleasure from all the excitement. We have a nice big England flag tied on the house, and some smaller ones too. My husband is rapt with them and has put photos of these flags on his Facebook page. My sis up in Scotland saw them and remarked that she dare not do the same, as the Scottish Independent lunatics would put a brick through her window!
(I hardly dare confess that we had to buy a copy of The Sun to get the big flag free. What a strange paper that is. It went straight in the bin of course.)

Typing this at halftime in Germany v Portugal. Germany got a penalty 10 minutes in. Then one Portuguese player off already for horrible, punch-in-face, foul followed by headbutting his victim as he lay on the ground.

Will say again what a pleasing oasis in all this unseemliness was provided by the England v Italy match, where there were no serious fouls, and few even slight ones, no diving, rolling or other play-acting; but just an enjoyable gentlemanly straightforward match.

What is it, BTW, with this rolling over&over affectation that every player who falls over these days seems to need to indulge in? When one falls over, one doesn't roll like that, whatever the impetus. You would think they were playing on a 45º slope!

Eliza there is and always has been a real rivalry in football and yes many, I'd say probably most, Scots like to see England beaten. It was so long before the rise of the SNP and has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with football.

I can't imagine there are many bricks put through windows though. It could of course happen but I would imagine it would be very rare indeed and of course things like that happen elsewhere in the UK as much as they do in Scotland. If there is football violence though it has nothing to do with the SNP or referendum. It has to do with thuggery.

I remember a case prior to the devolution referendum when Channel 4 wanted to film a documentary on anti-Englishness in Scotland. They put two guys in England rugby shirts and sent them along Rose Street to be picked on. Of course Edinburgh being Edinburgh they were basically ignored. So the producers thought let's go to Glasgow they'll get into bother there. Unfortunatly all that happened in Glasgow was that people bought them drinks and told them that football was a proper game. So the producers then had a bright idea of decking a car in the union jack and leaving it. It got bricked and the producers thought "yipee we've got our anti-Englishness" but then it was pointed out that the car had been left in Parkhead and the car was almost certainly bricked because it was taken for a Rangers supporter's car. Nothing to do with anti-Englishness. They had to admit defeat and abandon the programme.

I don't think my sis was entirely serious about bricks through her window Allan, but her area (Perthshire, between Dundee and Perth) seems to have a large and strident Nationalist contingent. Come on Musket we are not talking about that which was celebrations gone OTT and of course in the decades that followed Scotland fans got repeated plaudits for good, friendly, if admittedly drunken behaviour. We are talking about people or their property getting attacked in their own homes or in the street etc because they display their national colours during televised tournaments. It could possibly happen in Scotland. I'm not suggesting that it is not a possibility. But it is no more likely to happen in Scotland than anywhere else and I can't remember any incidents like those I've posted above happening in Scotland during tournaments overseas! And the idea that if there was football related violence directed towards England supporters then it would be by SNP voters is silly and more than a wee bit ignorant to be quite truthful. There is plenty grumping at each other in the referendum between Scottish Unionists and Scottish Nats but any incidents of violence have been very, very rare and I know of none specifically directed towards English incomers. Sorry but the idea had to be brought to heel. We have our serious football trouble and it is called religious sectarianism. So we're no goody two shoes. Basically though it would be nice to have a thread relating to England without someone having an unnecessary pop at Scotland.

Odd though. We always support all the home nations in everything, always have done. I support Villa first (grew up in Brum), England at footy (born there), and Wales at rugby (due to the my maternal side of the family being largely Welsh). After that, whomever's left in any competition from our islands gets my support. We're all one people, see. Luckily, the more enlightened Scots I know are happy to support England.

Impressed with Germany and looking forward to the Brazil/Mexico match tonight. Happy the England squad seem settled and unpressured and hope that they play as positively on Thursday as they did on Sunday. They're in with a chance (especially if they sort out their set piece blind spot).

Enjoying some great football! I love to see all these players from across the world in the same competition, a real treat.

Rather than dragging it out Al, I'm impressed that the fixtures allow the matches so close together. Although I am sure the coaching staff would like a longer gap to map out tactics and team selection. Too many limping off, and I don't just mean the physio...

Next Tuesday is cutting it fine. I leave London at 3.00, into Doncaster for 4.30 and at least 35 mins journey for a 5.00 kick off. I'd throw a sicky but we are discussing sickness and absence rates ......

Some people do support all the Home Teams Stu. Many don't. Plenty instances of it like the old England song sung on the terraces to the tune of thet Monkees' song "Poor old Craigie Brown...oh what can it mean....for a sad Scottish bastard and a crap football team". Likewise when I returned from Spain 82 all you heard on the TV re the fans was "Bonnie bonnie Scotland...what's it liek to be back home". Euro 96 when the parachutes came down in Wembley with country's flags only 2 got booed. Germany and Scotland. The idea that everyone in England supports Scotland is a non-starter. And to tell you the truth who cares? We have 5 million fans we don't need any more.

The change has been in England itself. In the last few decades there seems to have been a real drop in confidence. In the 60s and 70s they knew Scots wanted them beat (and of course you could swap Scots for Welsh or Irish) and they laughed it off. It was taken as the daft sport's rivalry that it was. Denis Law felt no qualms about going on Parkinson and saying he had to play golf in 1966 when England were playing Germany because he couldn't bare to watch in case they won. Everyone just laughed and of course a few of the England team were his mates. Likewise the likes of Alan Ball and Mick Channon made it clear how much they loved and needed to beat Scotland. Not many in Scotland thought any worse of them. It is sport and they are the oldest sporting rivalry in the football world. I think it has been lost a bit in England now as Scotland have slid down the rankings, the yearly fixture has long ended, and Germany and Argentina have overtaken Scotland as the teams the English love to beat. England remains the hate team for Scots though. Probably the being in bed with an elephant thing. It may be silly but it is sport. Just a game and not politics or racism. It'd be like saying Man City fans are anti Manchester because they want Man Utd beaten.

And as to the victim hood thing. Sorry but you won't, or at least I don't think you will, find me posting things blaming England for everything since 1066. In fact in another post the other day I pulled a poster up for suggesting that Glencoe was England's fault. We Scots were perfectly capable of murdering our own. All I'm saying is there has been a tendency for posts about or relating to England to then have an element of having a go at Scotland develop in them. Tedious enough were it true but when it is relating to the fear of Scots nats lunatics bricking the windows of English people then it needs comment. No such thing has happened or has even threatened to happen. The debate is not an anti-English debate and even about a third of English born people living in Scotland support independence. You Stu may not care how other posters view Scotland but as a Scot I do. Just wanted people to know that the suggestion was way off the mark

Dave channel had a programme showing the all time best England goals. Coming in at number 4, I think it was (number 1 in my book) was where Gazza chipped the ball over Braveheart's head, ran round him and scored on the volley.

One issue is the endless harping back to 1966 by all and sundry in England. There seems to be a certain part of the media and fan base that assume because we invented the game we should be the best at it. This sense of entitlement is pretty cringeworthy at the best of times and the constant banging on about 1966 narks me off ;-)

Re that Bobby Charlton goal, Dave: watched it again on YouTube. Very good example of one of those breakthru long runs & shot at the end which turn the crowd on; but hardly rare -- there's one not too different from that on MOTD most weeks. Lacking, tho, in that astonishing nonchalant elegance of that Gazza one.

I think what gets on many Scottish people's nerves a bit is that we watch the World Cup through England's (ie our footballing rivals) eyes. even during the opening ceremony they whittered on non-stop about England. I dare say had it been broadcast by BBC Scotland or STV and Scotland were in the tournament then our commentators etc would be the same. Difference is that the whole of England wouldn't be force fed it too.

The point about Andy Murray is the perfect example of taking things too serious. He was in a press interview with Tim Henman and the interviewer asked him who he'd be supporting as they tended to do to Scots for a while though there has been little of it so far this year. Henman joked "he won't be supporting Scotland anyway as they didn't make it" to which Murray joked back "I'll just support anyone who's playing England". It was all banter but several papers the next day run the story that "Murray hated England" and there was a tirade of both online and offline abuse against him. Even a death threat! Despite both Henman and the journalist himself insisting that they were all just having a good natured banter the story persisted for years. In a documentary last year Murray said that is why he seldom speaks to the press now other than on tennis matters and is very guarded in waht he says.

I think other prominent Scots who are now asked would be very reluctant to even suggest that they might not support England - despite what they really feel. It is daft to think that you can pressurise people into support a particular football team!!

Was surprised by the performance by Chile. They completely outplayed Spain ( The current holders) in every single department.

They were fitter faster and cleverer than Spain.

I think this was the most physically demanding game I have seen in this competition this year. Chile tackled like tigers and were pressing Spain into making many mistakes.

A good game to watch. If Chile can keep this up some of the other "high fliers" better watch out !!!

Spain played like a third division team. Soccer is like a religion in that country so the team and manager will feel the brunt of it on their return home. The French people openly displayed their anger when their side flopped in South Africa four years ago.

Still think Argentina or Brazil will win the tournament, my hope still remains with Germany.

I don't wanna get in a 'match of wits' with so few weapons of my own in regards to football but I just don't think some of the strategy regarding Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard during the second game showed promise. Some of us aren't complaining. A bunch of overpaid posers meet reality, only outdone by the US NFL. I didn't watch the match because the result was all too predictable, all the way. Now it's likely out of the way, we can get back to normal and work on what we are good at - and soccer ain't it. No "clearly" based on the short-term result, some of us could have told you that from way on back.
It's a pretty tawdry kind of nationalism, being required to support such a side, just because they wrap themselves in an English flag. Jingoism writ small. By all means enjoy a game, but to make the kind of fuss this has attracted is out of proportion. I'd have a bit more respect if most of those watching played. But they don't, so I don't.

Apologies guest, Allan and all: serious mistake on my part. For some reason I can't explain, I thought Uruguay's population was larger and Glasgow's smaller than they respectively are. The Glasgow population was Britain's second largest in my infancy (but not as big as Uruguay's). I see now that it has dwindled to half its former size thanks to boundary changes, resettlement to surrounding tow,ns etc.

Uruguay is still the smallest country in the tournament, by population.

I agree with some of your comments about Gerrard. He has never produced consistent top form for England. Great club player and OK he made a mistake that may have lost Liverpool the League but he had a great season otherwise.

As a captain he does not appear to be able to organize his team once they are on the pitch. Unlike John Terry and Rio Ferdinand who got left behind he does not inspire and marshall the defence.
INHO if either or both had been playing against Uruguay we would not have gone gung-ho for the win after we had equalised.

Actually he was penalised on two occasions. One for the Chelsea Branislav Ivanovic incident; the other was in Holland when he was playing for Ajax against PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal. He never played for Ajax again. Maybe we should have taken the same steps ?? !!

I too thought Germany would win -- see above. But drawing with Ghana has somewhat reduced their chances, eh? Just suppose USA beat them & overtake them, & Ghana win remaining match. Unlikely; but Germany no longer one of the cast-iron certs to proceed as appeared previously.

For once I actually felt sorry for Rooney and thought for once he showed humility when facing the press. Too be fair whoever Hodgson would have picked for his team whether it be younger players or the usual faithful old timers if the same failure had occurred he would have still been slammed for it no matter what he decided to do. Well done England? A squad worth about 550 million Pounds, and only two goals and one point to show for 270 minutes of football. Costa Rica are worth about one-eighteenth of that and top the group.

We went to the Tesco superstore today and were a bit miffed to find the whole place festooned with Greek flags. Why? As you probably know, my husband is from Ivory Coast and was rather disappointed to see this, as his country play Greece this evening. It's a bit thick of Tesco to side with one team like this. Surprising really. Obviously one expects England flags to be displayed as they're selling various items (or were!) for England fans, but to go all out for blooming Greece and not mention the other team....grrr!

I agree Michael. Even if the manager were Greek (subjunctive!) one couldn't condone such bias. I wanted to ask at the Customer Service desk, but there was a bit of a queue, and we'd just bought an enormous tub of ice-cream which was going to melt if we didn't hurry home. Maybe, to be fair, they feature a different country each day and it just happened to be Greece today. It's puzzling though.

So England did just manage to one point....

Some of the young players did play quite well....but as individuals. The whole team ( quite naturally in the circumstances ) looked disjointed and some of the players looked as if they didn't want to receive the ball...reminds me a little of Man United last season.

We badly need two central defenders who can organise and control the defence. Also we haven't any midfielders who can turn defence to attack and run box to box.

On the positive side I thought Shaw had an excellent second half and Jones and Smalling looked a little safer than the previous incumbants.

AS for Suarez....Surely he must be given a long suspension if not stopped from playing again.

3 times is 3 times too many.

Now... 24 matches? Not enough. Send him off for good. The press sickens me with that BS about the biting stems from childhood humiliation. Screw that. He's either a man or he is mentally unbalanced and dangerous.

The Uruguay-Italy game was interesting, as it was played as a contact sport. (I have a sore arm and have been sleeping in my adjustable chair in front of the TV, thus have been watching some of the games).

Except for a few calls (one I thought accidental contact brought a card), the referee let play continue despite many uncalled for hits from behind, or a palm to the back of the head.

I wondered if some enmity had been left over from league games in which some of the players might have participated.

I find FIFA football (soccer) a dull game, but when played as a contact sport like the Uruguay-Italy match, I might even become a fan.

Performance of the competition? How about Dominguez, the Ecuador goalkeeper tonight. Had to dive to save one shot. Otherwise it just looked as if shot was fired straight at him, which bespeaks some of the best goalkeeping anticipation I have seen in 70+ years of watching football [& playing -- as a goalkeeper! tho maybe not quite of World Cup class].

Just a couple of thoughts which this thread has provoked:
Rooney (despite the club he plays for) is the victim of a lot of negative reporting by the press. I have no doubt that he, and most of the England squad give of their best even if its not good enough. I think that if asked to play in goal he would, just to pull on the England shirt.
Steven Gerrard still has a lot to contribute to England and Liverpool even if he is slowing down a bit. Don't retire just yet.
Suarez - a long ban from international football and a requirement to wear a gum shield whenever he steps onto a football pitch. I am interested in how Liverpool FC see his future at Anfield.

So Suarez has been dealt with !!! 4 months from partaking in anything linked to football. Plus 12 games ban on playing in International games. This means he cannot play for the rest of the World Cup. If he is still in the English Premier League he will miss the first 14 matches of the season.

There is an appeal facility and it is said that he will appeal. If the appeal process takes any time to come up with a decision, Suarez WILL be able to play until the appeal process comes to a decision.

I think the punishment is too lenient given the World stage he was playing on plus his past history of biting.

Just watching tonight's games. Portugal v Ghana is far more exciting, to me Germany & USA look as if they are settling to qualify as if the present scores hold ( Port 2-1 & Germany 1-0) they will both qualify.

After today the real games start with the knockouts. No more tactical results. You either win or you are out. There will some great games.

I still fancy Germany or Argentina   but hey once the knockout stage starts anyone can win it.

The main impression of the USA/Germany match that I came away with was that Germany was much more solid, they read the field better, placed themselves better, were more unflappable. That said, I enjoyed it.

Now, the next game for the US is with Belgium. I watched South Korea/Belgium today. I rooted for the Koreans- they're cute. :) And man, some of those men from Belgium are HUGE. But there, again, it seemed to me that Belgium was more savvy, less tentative. And some of the footwork on both sides was marvelous. I am in awe.

I agree. ~180 touches in the first 20 or so minutes? My thoughts? I know this may sound odd but it seemed to me as if Germany was practicing. Standoffish and then playing dangerously close with intricate set plays and meticulous footwork. Call me crazy but it just seemed to 'add up' as the game progressed.

Brazil v Chile was an exciting game though not a classic in football. I think the final result was just about right because I felt that Brazil were very slightly the better team.

They had a last minute fright when Chile hit the bar with the goalkeeper completely beaten.

The Brazil keeper made two really good saves from the penalty shootout and the last Chile penalty hit the post and all of Brazil breathed a huge sigh of relief.

The Colombia v Uruguay game was not so good and with Colombia going two up they tried to play safe and close down the game. Uruguay did attack a lot in the last few minutes but it was all desperate stuff and they never looked like scoring.

With regards to Uruguay, strange about the differing treatment of Suarez, who has been been made into a hero for getting sent off for biting. Compare the reaction with the England fans with David Beckham who got sent off by a very dubious ( and not in any way dangerous ) action. He was castigated and made a scapegoat by the England fans as an excuse for England going out.

Just watched Mexico v Holland ( or Nether Regions !! lol ).

Great match played in stifling heat. Mexico looked to have it sewn up, leading 1-0 with Holland struggling with the heat. Don't know what was served in that second drinks stop !!! But the Dutch started to press and after several corners (all wasted) they scored a great goal by Schneider. Then in injury time Robben was awarded a penalty. He had been refused at least two that were far more worth a penalty than this. Probably the ref thought it was time to poor guy got one.

Is it a co-incidence that the Dutch Manager is coming to manage my team, Manchester United. Who of course ,excluding a short period by Moyes was Sir Alex Ferguson. Alex as any football enthusiast will know, was very adept at gaining very late victories.

I look forward to this season under Louis van Gaal, and hope after last year's debacle it will be worth my season ticket.

But for the rest of the World cup I will be shouting for Holland. ( Though I think a South American team will win it.

I will root for the Dutch simply because I love to watch some of the players. Robben, as I have posted before, simply amazes me. Van Persie too. There are others. Just like at least several on the German team AND I get to play Schweinsteiger!!! when the Germans are playing.

Costa Rica deserved that win; CR played a man down for near an hour, and Greece could not put them away. I intensely dislike kicks as a way to settle a well played match, so I did not stick around for the shoot-out. Ditto with Brazil/Chile. I much prefer sudden death play on the pitch. Playing that long, in that weather, sudden death might become more than a description of overtime.

I still think, as have suggested before, that both extra time & shootouts should be abolished. If match drawn at 90 minutes, then the team which has conceded fewer free kicks [omitting for offside] should be declared winner. If there is a tie on these, then it might be reasonable to proceed straight to a shootout: but only then.

Germany had to labor mightily to get the win over Algeria. Which is what they're good at - laboring mightily. Similar to the US, most of whose wins in their international history have been from being scored on first.

That said, I don't expect France to be much of a problem for Germany. Belgium will be the test for the US side. Those guys are bigger and brawnier than them. Argentina should be able to beat Switzerland because of Messi, but you never know - he's had some off games lately.

On the other side, I'm rooting for Columbia - they've been playing better Brazilian-style football in this tournament than the host side.
And Costa Rica could just keep surprising everyone - I would not want to call that one.

All in all, it's been a more exciting World Cup than the last two, if not more. I'm enjoying it.

I thought that Germany had to work extremely hard to go through.
Algeria made some fantastic counter attacking moves but just lacked the skill and prowess of a goal scorer.
I never felt that Germany would lose as they had most of the control of the game. They made lots of chances - Mueller missed at least three chances he would normally take.

I think that Algeria were getting more tired as 90 minutes approached and was confident that extra time would see off the gallant Algerians.

In tonight's games I think Argentina will be too hot to handle for Switzerland. Belgium I feel have not yet produced the form that I expected of them. They have some really fine players and maybe tonight they will show what they can do - I am expecting them to win.

I agree with Michael and Gnu and others who don't like penalties to decide a game. I am with them but I am not sure what the answer is.

We have experimented with " a golden goal " but it did not work. It can take too long a time to score a winner.

I don't think that corners or fouls will work either because it will cause problems. I think it will make fouls & corners to have too much importance attached to them. We have seen in this World Championship how referees are constantly ducking decisions to give anything in the penalty area. Many decisions are not given in the penalty area that would have been made in other areas of the pitch.

So love em or hate em I think that penalties will be still the best for the game.

And... it makes for more drama which FIFA likes as it draws in more viewers.

Well said, Musket. I am near hoarse. Being a bachelor living alone in my own house, I get to yell very loudly at errant play and poor reffing (though I found the reffing much better in the last game than other games). Some may think such behaviour is odd but those have not played sports at a high level.

I must say, I find it odd that some strikes are taken upon first touch when a second touch for a proper strike with the ball 'settled' for spin and position is available. The presence of mind and field vision seems lacking among these lads while most are well experienced. Perhaps my experience playing other sports simply doesn't apply. Only time I ever played 'soccer' was with a basketball on the street and got my nose broken... wasn't much of a header! I speak from playing squash (yellow dot - the most demanding sport in the world save warfare), hockey, Yankee football and others. I do NOT know if settling and changing ball spin is even possible in football. It just seems to me that it should be because of the way the ball is made???

In any case, another great day of entertainment.

That was a great game. I had expected to be painfully aware of the USA team's flaws in commitment and execution but instead, it was just a great game. I thought the Belgians played more aggressively but that the US team had outstanding defense. And not just Tim Howard, although he was a joy to watch. It was a heart pounder, for sure.

After the game was over, and the combination pride/disappointment faded a bit, I realized just how few fouls there were in such a hard-fought game!

I never 'quite' understood why so many games feature almost interminable rough play and careless or intentional fouls. ( Years ago, I watched a team...Croatia, I believe... attempt to win by battering their opponent senseless.)

USA & Belgium proved it is possible to play hard and still refrain from stupid stuff.

The US is indeed working toward better awareness & competence in international play. We DO have way too many other sports that usurp TV time, and that have more timeouts for commercials. 45 minutes without trying to SELL something? Unheard of!

I agree with the majority here who found this to be a great match in all aspects of entertaining, exciting and skilful football.

I agree with Michael about the game mirroring England v Italy in respect of clean play and sportsmanship. Credit to both USA and Belgium for providing this showpiece in this World Theatre.

I found myself not wishing either side to lose but I was glad that it was won in extra time and not have to go to penalties. Nor would I have liked to have seen it decided on corners.

For me in chorus with others here I would pick out Tim Howard as the Man of the Match. Of course it came as no surprise to me as I have watched him many times when he played for Manchester United. He was excellent when he was at United but he has improved as he has matured and now must be one of the best in the World.

After the second goal by another Everton player Lukaku I thought USA were dead and buried. Not a bit of it; they took a real deep breath and they went for it. Fantastic. Belgium buckled and I know they were very glad to hear the final whistle go.

Another USA player that took my eye was Michael Bradley. I can't understand some of the criticisms that have been mentioned here. Last night he was a great leader and led from the front. Fantastic engine a a great distributor of the ball.

I hope there will be more games like this.

One thing is certain; USA can be proud of it's team and I am sure they will get even better.

I sure hope so. We need more teams like this.

Belgium of course go forward and I wish them well in the next round. I think they will be hard to beat....but not many will come as close to doing so as the USA.

I have said it many times in this forum... Yankee football is as much of a game of chess as it is a game of physical prowess. I watch many sports. Yankee football is, by far, the best of all to watch because of the intricacy of the game and the physical demands which far exceed those of even rugby or squash (both of which which I have a passion for). I find it odd that so many crap on it for whatever reasons and haven't taken the time to learn what they are crapping on.

Finally... Friday? I have to wait until Friday? Oh, this sucks!

MLS is on some sports channels but I prefer the real deal, The Premiership. We do get other leagues' games but who has the time to watch more than the best?

Same with rugby. The TV coverage sucks here. Same with Aussie Rules witch I thoroughly enjoy... ONE game a year at zero dark hundred hours? If I forget to record it, I go another year without it unless I You Tube it and that is a challenge.

Just watched Germany v France. Not the most exciting or attractive game of the tournament by a long way.

Germany scored early and the proceeded to do what they do best....protect a lead. France strived to get back into the game but they were a very disjointed team.

Germany's performance was very workmanlike but nobody stood out. I suppose this was to be expected if what the media announced 24 hours before the game....that Germany has 7 players who were suffering from flu.

I am looking to a much better game tonight.....please.

Instead of going to our traditional July Fourth parade, I walked with my dog to the staging area, noted a half dozen of the entries, came home and watched Brazil last out Colombia instead. Enjoyed it.

In an hour or so, I'll be picked up and taken to a backyard picnic with music inside the house. Always fun.

Even the camera work is atrocious. Every few minutes I end up watching a close-up shot of one or two players and I just can't see what is going on the rest of the field of play. Although, I must say the camera team knows how to pick out the babes for cameo appearances. >;-)

I agree with you. I have seen it coming over the years. But last night's Colombia v Brazil was full of spoiling tactics (fouls) by both sides.

Plenty of violent tackles went unpunished. Also we have seen diving, not only to get a penalty, but all over the pitch go on generally unpenalised but not unseen by the referees. If the refs would penalise with at least a yellow card it would soon stop. It seems that almost every coming together is either a vicious foul or a dive. What ever happened to the humble ( but fair ) shoulder charge - that is shoulder to shoulder competing for the ball??
Get a grip refs.

That said, the game was interesting in phases and again a team with a two goal lead had to hang on for dear life. Phew !!

Getting ready for tonight's matches. I will naturally be shouting for Holland as their Manger is now the boss of my team, Manchester United. Difficult decision this one as it would be of more benefit if he was with United now and not go on to the World Cup Final.

As I have said earlier, the reffing staff only have their eyes from their vantage point in real time. I can see more clearly and from multiple angles on my 47" LCD TV in my living room than they can... in slo-mo too! And I can see it over and over because I can record the works. I have seen poor reffing but a percentage of it must be be ignored because of this.

Are we witnessing 'more' violence or do we now have the tech to view the violence? Of course, no matter because it is shocking and I wish there was a way to stop it. Good sportsmanship seems to be a way of the past. Ya know... I hear a lot of people condemn hockey because of the fighting but if ya think on it... not allowing a man (or his tem mates) to 'defend himself' is near the same given what I have seen in the Cup. Cracked back. That kinda shit would be settled in like fashion on the ice.

Hi

Just watched Argentina v Belgium. Not a great game but a great goal by Higuain. A first time touch volley on the turn hit with great skill and accuracy.

Unfortunately the rest of the game did not live up to this.

I think Argentina just about deserved to win and they seem to be playing progressively better in each round. Messi was made to appear ordinary by the close marking Belgium defence. The Argentine defence kept Belgium quiet and limited their chances on goal.

Fellaini was tireless and covered lots of ground. Unfortunately the ground he was covering was never quite in contact with the actual play.

As Michael says.....anyone can win this now.....it's difficult to call. As for Costa Rica beating Holland....er I think not.....make that hope not !!!....gulp.

I watched all the Holland v Costa Rica game.

Quite exciting at times and with extra time & penalties I go to bed very late!!!

I thought the Holland were the much better team for most of the game. They just didn't get it together and make the best of van Persie. Robben was his usual irrepressible self. Though I thought at times he tried too often to score when he should have passed.

Costa Rica tried very hard and made occasion counter attacks, especially towards the end. So we went to penalties. Yes a very controversial and interesting change by van Gaal....but hey....it worked. We have discussed earlier about penalties not being a very good way to finish a game. However I think that justice was done as Holland hit the woodwork a few times and brought many good saves from the goalkeeper. If they had used the number of corners (say) as the means of deciding the winners then Holland would have run out comfortable winners.

Sure looks like it. I am a keen supporter of Man U and have a Season Ticket and go to as many away games as I can so I hope to see a change in the way the team plays this year.

van Gaal does not suffer fools gladly and is reported to be a very stiff disciplinarian so I look forward to seeing him.

I was not happy in the way that United treated David Moyes. I believe he is a very good manager, I think he was over-awed in trying to manage this huge Club. He tried to stamp his own methods on United too soon and it rebounded against him.
Many excuses have been made for him but the fact was that he inherited a side that had won the Premier League by 13 clear points and only finished 7th is undisputable.

I believe in spite of that they should have given him another season.

Moyes is a good manager and although his time at Old Trafford was not a good one, he will have learned some valuable lessons from it. He will be back I am sure and will prove himself with another club.

That might have been so in this instance. Generally, tho, the fault is the other way. So often, Emma & I will yell together, "Shoot!", as there is a perfect opening, even if sometimes at a slight angle to the goal; but, no, he is just somehow, it appears, obligated by convention to cross to another player a bit nearer the goal, only to have the pass intercepted & the ball cleared. Happens all the time. Seems a sort of etiquette not to shoot when one has the chance, but to try to donate the honour to a team-mate. Why do they keep doing this?

I think there are a number of contributory reasons.

You will of course remember when " Johnny Foreigner" came over here and inflicted a first ever victory over England on their own soil at Wembley. It was no fluke 3-6 we lost and were given a lesson in football. It was in 1953 and it was Hungary that was guilty of that heinous crime.

Since then we have been always playing catch up and in doing so we have tried to copy the foreign teams. They all play possession football and over the years since then different nations have all had their own brand of this type of game.

To achieve this, teams need to be extremely skilful in ball control and passing rapidly to create openings.

In trying to demonstrate this skill teams tend to overdo the passing and try to walk the ball into the net. What has developed is that the skill of sharp shooting has been affected.

Another possible reason is that the art of goalkeeping has improved greatly and long distance shooting tends not to trouble the keepers these days.

I agree with you that players do not shoot as often as they could do.
Shooting and missing gives possession and control to the opposition. So a player is on a hiding to nothing if he does so. It is easier to pass the buck - literally.

In the individual case of Robben he is a very clever player and runs at defences causing panic. He can be deadly when he gets a shooting opportunity ( as I know only too well when he knocked Man United out of the European Cup two years ago!!!!). But in The World cup this year he is trying just that bit too much and makes some marvelous runs but takes it just too far and runs into trouble. He would be better shooting or passing earlier to the likes of van Persie who can and does shoot and score - especially with that deadly left foot.

I am hoping that Holland can pick up their game and beat Argentina Argentina are improving with each game, The news that Aguero will be back to be in partnership with Messi will give them much more firepower up front.

Aguero is in player Michael, who does shoot and scores from any angle.

My heart says Holland but my head says Argentina.

Disagree absolutely, however, with your opinion that "the art of goalkeeping has improved greatly"; and feel qualified particularly to pronounce on this aspect as I was a goalkeeper myself way back when -- 65 or so years, in fact. I OPd a thread a while ago on how IMO goalkeeping had deteriorated since my day. Not "old man's nostalgia", honest. I am grieved that a goalkeeper is nowadays praised for a good save for stopping a shot by sticking a foot out -- absolute anathema, in my day; uncontrollable and liable to give a dangerous rebound. One was expected to get down & catch it to one's body, or handle it, if necessary, round the post -- far easier to control. One just did NOT use one's feet. Today's best goalkeepers, eg Hart, Cech, Courtois, do not ever try to go the wrong, uncontrollable, feet-first way, but tend always to get the hands to the ball, & body behind it where possible. Just watch carefully & I think you will find I am right about that.

I expected your disapproval of my comment about improvements in goalkeeping knowing about your goalkeeping days of yore.

I too had a spell between the posts many years ago before moving on to rugby, and my son still plays at a reasonable standard as goalkeeper for a local amateur club.

My reasons for my claim are that today the ball is much lighter and modern players have learned the skill of swerving and dipping the ball.
This did not happen so much in my day ( and yours).

Also the game is faster and the goalkeepers have to be much faster too. Also they have to be able to pass and distribute the ball more than we did.

IMHO the keepers today are subjected to much more blocking and obstruction when going out for crosses etc.

I do agree with you that it is much safer if the keeper tries to catch the ball or get his body behind it rather than just stick out a foot or whatever part of their anatomy they can.

I realise I have not mentioned the hazards of playing when we did heavy,wet slippery ball, having to bounce the ball after three paces ( or was it two?). The pitches too were much inferior. Many times the goal area was like a swamp.

I know that we will probably not agree about this and I fully understand and respect your view. I know that there are many others who share your view so it will always be a point of discussion.

Why, I remember once being shoulder charged by a large forward - even remember his name: Alfred Young - as I caught the ball so was off-balance, stumbling back into the goal, whither Alfred, propelled by impetus, staggered after me, stumbled & sat on my head; and a goal was given! Try that on one of today's pampered poor-ickle-darlings of goalkeepers and see where it gets you!...
Whatever I tell you next, Steve, you better believe that even that 15 ton ball could move thru the air quite fast when the fit came on it. Stan Mortensen was indeed v good; but I always preferred Tommy Lawton myself for effectiveness. Messi? - who he?

I agree that goalkeepers were challenged by centre-forwards usually and the challenge was supposed to be shoulder to shoulder but seldom was. Nat Lofthouse was famous for his "heavy" challengers on the keepers.

What happens now though is that the attackers deliberately obstruct, push and even wrestle with the keeper even before the ball is kicked for corners and free kicks. It is a minefield in the penalty area these days and often the referees allow it to let the game flow.

A case in point is when David Gea came to Man United as a callow youth from Spanish football where keepers are more protected. The opposition soon realised his inexperience and continually took him out. Teams were queuing up to get at him and at one stage it was talked about him being sent home. He then had special training to toughen him up and to get him used to the rough and tumble. Now he is recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

I will watch tonight's game with more attention to goalkeeping..lol

As to the penalty area cuddling on corners, shirt & short-elastic & arm holding ~~ when are FIFA going to get the guts to instruct referees that any hand to body or clothes contact must be immediately penalised with a card, however anxious refs may be to keep games flowing? This is genuinely something that one just didn't think of doing in my day. Till this abuse is properly addressed, the game is going to continue on its downward trajectory till it really does cease to be worth watching at all.

What a one-sided game!!

Brazil never came to the party.

For 15 minutes it looked like it could be a good game but this was just the Germans weighing up the opposition. When they found there was none they made hay in the sunshine.

The Brazilian defence went walk-about. Then Germany opened up and the supposed best team in the World just crumbled. There was no discipline nor any organisation what-so-ever.

Neymar's absence was not to blame for this total shambles. He would not have got a sniff of a goal. Germany were strolling in the second half and IMHO could have scored several more had they wished to do so.

Germany's mid-field was outstanding. They were organised and committed as they broke up Brazil's powder puff attacks, turning these into rapid assaults on an almost non-existant Brazilian defence.

On this form Germany must be strong favourites to win the trophy.

Surely though, Argentina or Holland will provide a much stiffer task ??

I don't think tonight's game will be one-sided. I think it will be close. I want Holland to win but am holding my breath and I am certainly not betting on them to win.

Surely someone will agree... Brazil began the game with a mental attitude of at least trepidation because two star players were missing and they were playing a very good team while Germany went in on a high note. One, then two, early goals and they fell apart 'mentally'. Of course their minds were not 'on the game' as they were preoccupied with losing after the first goal. After the second goal, it was almost a certainty.

Talent, attitude and discipline win. Ya gotta have all three.

Dunno about that. Germany didn't have to display "form". As the Grauniad put it, they were playing a "team" that appeared to have just been dragged off the beach. Naturally, the canter will have helped to preserve them for Sunday. But I want the Argies to win tonight. Because I love Messi and because I want to see a final involving South America and Europe and because I'd rather watch paint dry than watch a final between the boring beach-towel putter-outerers and and the dirty cheating diving robbin' Robben-inspired Dutch. I've archived a couple of old Holby City episodes for that eventuality.

Well, I've seen it "explained" incorrectly so often in the British media by a verbatim translation of "steigen" or "Steiger". The relevant part, however, is "Steige" or (in Northern Germany) "Stiege". This word is out of use today, but once meant, among other things, a rather small confinement.

The English word "sty" has the same root, of course.

So the name, very simply and rather close to the English language, means "(the man coming from) the swinesty (pigsty)".

Of course those odds will change when tonight's game is decided. Be interesting to see who the bookies will decide who is the team to win.

At those odds I certainly won't be betting.

A friend of mine who is Chinese who does not normally gamble, bet that England would lose 1-2 against Italy, which of course they did. So he the bet on Uruguay beating England 2-1 as well.....and we know what happened. He knows nothing about football. Perhaps he should replace Alan Shearer as a pundit...lol

Wolfgang, when I lived in Bavaria they had a pejorative phrase for a loser, I suppose. It sounded like 'Sei Steicher Tyroler ' and meant an imitation mountain climber or something of that sort, literally a pig climbing Tyroler. Does any if this make sense? With my afinity to Man United and van Gaal now our manager, no surprise who I am supporting either.

However I think Argentina are a good side. They will not cave like Brazil. I think it will be a hard,physical game and I think Argentina will have too much fire up front. Not that Holland don't have some great strikers, but I think Robben will be marked out of it and van Persie has been ill recently and won't be fit even if he plays.

That was a good match to watch. (Unlike the Germany/Brazil game, which left a bad taste in the mouth)

Hard fought, evenly matched, good refereeing kept the roughness to a minimum (am I right in thinking that?) and - I didn't have a dog in the hunt but I found myself cheering for the Argentines - the right team won.

Watched the game last night. As I expected very close thing.
Argentina completely blocked out Robben & van Persie.

Neither side looked like scoring and both goalkeepers had little to do.I have seen it quoted in the papers that Robben only touched the ball 6 times in the first half!!

van Gaal tried a different strategy. He tried to win the game by putting on his 3 subs instead of 2 and thus keeping his Goalkeeper for the penalty shootout. Some you win.........

I don't think that Germany will get an easy ride but they look a fair bet to me.

Mike, the odds you quote are for lifting the World Cup? The match odds, that I have placed on are, as at now, Germany 13/10, Argentina 23/10 and draw 9/4. I never bet on overall winner as that can take penalties into account, and I would want far better odds for such a chance result!

By the way, a bloke put a bet on the 7.1 result at 500/1. Lucky sod....

I am slightly confused by your post. I never said that Argentina had made more shots on goal.

I said that neither side looked like scoring. Argentina may have had 4 shots on goal, and they may have looked more dangerous occasionally but I don't recall the Holland keeper having to make a good save.

Argentina played brilliantly in defence by tying up van Persie and almost obliterating Robben. Mascerano for me was the man of the match.

With regards to the Final. Germany don't just have two strikers. All their team is capable of scoring as they all change their positions constantly. I think Argentina will have difficulty in constraining Germany.

I really don't mind who wins as long as it is a good game. I like sauerkraut with my corned beef.

I have been a season ticket holder at Hillsborough since the 69/70 season as a small lad. I worked down the pit too, many moons ago. We had a few of the lads come to Manton when Elsecar shut. My main connection with Mexborough is somewhat a pain in the arse. Or at least, I had an operation at Montagu Hospital on my arse a couple of years ago...

Mind you, I too have fallen. Instead of being on the Kop or even the North Stand, I do the hospitality bit, a la carte meal, comfy seats... Costs an arm and a leg but the only way to get Mrs Musket to convert to the true religion. My two lads take photos of their rats coffin and bovril from the kop and send it to my phone, knowing I would rather be with them than across where I sit. Mind you, neither complain when Mrs Musket can't make it and they get wined & dined...

And can't too much praise Romero's astonishing performance during the shoot-out; even better than Krul's the previous round. What might have happened, mind you, if Van Gaal had been able to bring Krul on again, which he was presented from doing by force-majeure, having used up his substitutes due to injury...

I too have been able to have "the high life" in that my son's company are Singapore based and the Chairman is a Man United fan ( fanatic).
So he rented an executive box and on most games my son & I were able to go. He also bought 4 season tickets in The North Stand. Now called The Alex Ferguson stand.

Like yours, my wife did not really show much interest in attending games but one week-end the Chairman invited her to come to the game with him. When she came home she was really excited by her excursion. She recounted how she had been escorted round facilities by Peter Schmeichel. Peter stands about 6ft 5ins and my wife is " 1 inch short of 5ft!!!   However Peter was charming and introduced her to several United players.
She then accompanied the chairman into the restaurant and she described the food in much detail.
When I asked her how did she enjoy the game....she replied " Oh that...it was OK. I asked her who they were playing and what the score was. She she didn't know but she thought United won.

Nuff said. She has not been since.

My son & I still go because we bought two of the season tickets from the company. At a discount of course.

Unfortunately (for me) the company cancelled this arrangement two years ago.

According to my guide on the cable, it starts about 15 minutes before that. Maybe that 15 minutes is when the coverage starts with the analysts? The start is 11:45 in BC, so 10:45 in Alaska. Is an American channel covering it, or are you able to watch on CBC?

Ragdall, I have found it mainly on ESPN on cable. There has been another tv channel that broadcast a few of the matches. The commentary usually starts a half hour before the game.

By the way, today I happened upon a match between the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers. To my great surprise I saw Clint Dempsey! I don't know why I was so surprised but I think I just kind of assumed that the USA team that played at FIFA was an actual entity.

The point is that many successful sportspersons are suspected of having opted for their nationality just to optimize their success or income. National officials often encourage this practice, although it effectively diminishes the identification of citizens with their national team, the raison d'être of such tournaments.

Fortunately, excessive "symbolic patriotism" seems to be slowly decreasing, even in Latin America.

As in the Japanese speed skater who was dropped from his team, and moved to Russia and obtained citizenship... and proceeded to make the Japanese regret their decision.

The major US sports... football, baseball, basketball... are ALL about teams trying to buy a winning team. At least the World Cup has some semblance of National Pride...even with the odd mix one gets in the US and European teams.

I see England have picked Simon Kerrigan for the next Test. Kerrigan of course was savaged by the Australians last year when he was hit for ) for 53 off eight overs on the first day. He was taken off and not used for the rest of the series. I have seen him in a couple of games this year and he does not look like England class to me. But we are woefully short of spin bowlers.

You may be interested to learn that Man United had 7 players to play for England in ( I think 2001). Liverpool had 6 in June of this year !!

So maybe it's not how many but how good they are??

This thing about trying to build teams from non-national players is rife.

An interesting one is Adnan Januzaj. As a 16 year old he became a Manchester United player having previously played for a Belgian team having been born there. His parents are Kosovo/Albanian descent.

Last year at 19 was picked to play in United's first team and shows great promise.

Januzaj is eligible to represent Belgium through birth and passport, Albania through his ethnic Albanian heritage, Turkey through his grandparents, and Serbia due to the disputed status of his parents' homeland of Kosovo. He is also eligible to represent Kosovo in international football; although Kosovo does not at this time have a FIFA-affiliated senior team.

All these Countries want Januzaj to represent them. Plus England were making overtures for him to qualify on residential grounds.
He eventually chose Belgium and was selected to go with their team this year to the World Cup. he was only used as a substitute but his manager says that he was taken as much for the experience as a squad player.

It was reported that he has received death threats from fans of teams that he turned down.

Gets complicated don't it ???
