Subject: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Mr Red Date: 18 Jul 14 - 06:54 PM discovered this 6 months or more ago. Not sure when it became usable. But if you centre click on a hyperlink it opens that page in a new tab or window. (Most websites anyway) The way I set up FireFox portable it means I can carry on reading the thread list (eg) while the selected thread(s) are loading. Been meaning to share this wheeze with the community. Enjoy. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: GUEST,Ed Date: 18 Jul 14 - 07:45 PM if you centre click on a hyperlink it opens that page in a new tab Ermmm, it been doing that for 10 years at least... Do you want a prize? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: GUEST,Ed Date: 18 Jul 14 - 07:55 PM OK, ten years might be an exaggeration, but certainly eight: "in Internet Explorer 7, you can middle-click a link to open the link" |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Tootler Date: 18 Jul 14 - 08:30 PM Guest Ed. Just because you've known it for 10 years or even 7 doesn't mean everyone knows. It's not something I've seen widely broadcast, so I reckon there are a lot who don't know about it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: GUEST Date: 18 Jul 14 - 09:13 PM I didn't know about it. I've been using right-click to select "open in new tab" dozens of times each day. Thank you, Mr Red. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Jul 14 - 06:55 AM The first mouse I used was the four-button puck on a Perq Unix workstation in 1984, and on that you could reassign the button functions for every program separately. So mice with more than two buttons are not exactly news to me. But I didn't realize the wheel-button on a Windows machine could do that until this thread, so thanks. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: GUEST Date: 19 Jul 14 - 10:32 AM And if the mouse is not over a link, then you can quickly scroll around the page (up/down and left/right both at the same time) by moving the mouse while holding down the wheel button. That works in my word processor too (Atlantis). |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Mr Red Date: 02 Sep 14 - 05:18 PM refresh - because this is the first time I have returned to this thread. This wheeze is (for many) one of those "unknown, knowns" as Rumpsfelt (sic) would say. I found it by accident. And one or two professionals I have spoken with didn't know it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Stanron Date: 02 Sep 14 - 08:12 PM F5 to refresh pages is not new news. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Jack Campin Date: 02 Sep 14 - 08:52 PM And all these suggestions also work on MacOS - that was news to me too. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Sep 14 - 08:53 PM I know. But it is probably news to Mr. Red. ;) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Wheel Click Mouse - open new tab/window From: GUEST,DaveRo Date: 03 Sep 14 - 02:14 AM There are a very few differences between OSes and browsers though: Keyboard shortcuts, browsers With Firefox - and probably other browsers - there is an option to specify whether a new tab opens in foreground or background, e.g. when using middle-click. A useful shortcut is control-F5 - especially when a page's layout is screwed up (the css). |
