Despite what the BBC caption says, surely this is Dr Lucy Duran.

I tried, I tried. But listening to people talk in general terms about instruments I can't even see, much less hear, seemed futile.

And what is the instrument being played in the background? They don't even say!

(I suspect it's a Lyon and Healy electronic harp.)

Hi, Leeneia.

Fairly sure (from the sound of it and the reference made to it slightly later by the speaker) that the instrument concerned is a Kora -- described as a West african harp/lute.

There are many videos on YouTube, and players to look out for are the likes of Toumani Diabate and Solo Cissokho.
(Apologies for my ineptitude in posting clicky links!)

One going on EBay from Italy ridiculously cheap (seller doesn't know what it is):

snakeskin-head 8-string kora

Thanks, Anne. I'll go on YouTube and check out the kora.

Looks like the buyer of the eBay kora was determined to have it. It went cheap because there was only one buyer, but they had upped their maximum bid several times, so you would have had to bid high to beat them.
