According to Wikipedia

In August 2013, she revealed to AARP that she has Parkinson's disease, and "can no longer sing a note."

I'm sorry to say that, a year ago, Linda Ronstadt was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

She thinks that she has been suffering from it many years, and she can no longer sing.

Olddude, I agree: I enjoy her singing, too.
I know she sang on the San Patricio album a few years ago (primarily a collaboration between Ry Cooder and The Chieftains). Anybody else familiar with more recent recordings?
Jeremy

sorry to hear about that. what's joni's excuse for not doing much for many years? mind you, if i had made a load of money and enjoyed a lot of success could i be bothered to keep on trying with diminishing returns? but then, poor old leonard cohen - was 'forced' to get out on the road again and found he loved it that we loved him. come on joni - one more time!

Parkinson's, I think a particularly insidious disease...the mind is willing the brain is not. We have known several folks with Parkinson's. One, vital, vigorous man suffered for 12 - 14 years that we knew him. At first it was tremors, and then almost total disability. A new medication or treatment would give relief, almost normalcy, for a few months and then cease working, and over the years the cycle repeated. I would think when he was in remission, he must have felt like a mouse cowering in the corner of a herpatarium waiting for the snake to get hungry, but he cherished every able moment. My heart goes out to Linda Ronstadt. It goes out to all Parkinson's sufferers.

As to Joni Mitchell and some others of that generation, perhaps they have nothing new to say musically, and have gracefully retired from the public rather than repeat old material the no longer find relevant. Most R&B oldies acts could take a clue.

Aside from concentrating on painting and other projects (like a multiple volume autobiography), Joni suffers from Morgellon's Syndrome. She put out an album of new originals, Shine, in 2009. Considering how the music industry and fans turned their backs on her once she started doing jazz and less commercial but more innovative work, I think she's well entitled to now shun the music industry—and the endless but fickle hunger of the public.

Really good interview from earlier this week on the Diane Rehm show.

Linda Ronstadt Interview Close to an hour, and worth the time. No question that anyone in their right mind was and always will be a fan.

I got a call from an old boyfriend I hadn't heard from in years. I can't remember exactly when, but would have been the very late 70's or perhaps 1980 or '81 who was working as a rigger for major acts on tour. He was working an LR tour and they were coming to Huntington. He invited me to attend and I sat on-stage (behind the speakers and out of sight of the audience) for the entire concert. Was an amazing experience to watch her perform from that close, see her energy, and also to simply see what all is involved on stage with a major concert. I was too shy to accept an invitation to be introduced to her or to attend the backstage gathering after the show. It was an unforgettable experience and opportunity however, that I have never forgotten.

Linda Ronstadt took a whack at opera back in 1984 in a weird Shakespeare in the Park (?) production of Puccini's "La Boheme." "Boheme" is a good beginning for both a singer and for a newcomer to listening to opera. The roles are not overly difficult and the plot is uncomplicated and essentially timeless (think young poets, painters, and others trying to break into the arts, and their struggles and romances—maybe hippies, but in the middle of mid-1800s Paris). Well—Bohemians.

But this production was a bit weird in a number of respects, and this, combined with Ronstadt's newness to this kind of performing, didn't inspire her with confidence. Critics said that she was "tentative and uncertain" and noted that her lack of confidence in the production itself was undoubtedly largely responsible for this. Not really her fault if her opera debut was, at best, "iffy."

I saw her in a film clip (Classic Arts Showcase--sort of MTV for adults) doing a couple of songs in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" and she was really good in that. Really nailed the songs and the acting. Charming!

Critics also suggested that, rather than opera, Miss Ronstadt might be better off going for musical theater, like Rogers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, and such. Her voice, lovely though it was, was a bit light for opera, whereas in her concerts, she managed Broadway show songs very nicely.

Newsweek article from 1984: Clicky.

And then--Parkinson's! Damn!!

I found Warren Zevon's music because of Linda Ronstadt. She recorded some of his songs, such as "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Mohammed's Radio", "Carmelita", "Hasten Down the Wind", and sang the descant in Zevon's Empty-Handed Heart.

I saw her in concert once, but was very far away from the stage. It was 1976, and she opened for the Beach Boys. I liked Ronstadt better.

Ronstadt received the White House Arts Honor on Monday last week (July 28). On Tuesday she was on the Diane Rehm show and discussed her career and her life and her illness. It was a fascinating interview.

Linda's rather queer lover of the California Brown dynasty ....moved beyond her and his pinkish celibacy to marry...a Gust...he shortly thereafter removed the terms " husband and wife" to firmly establish what sort of "clouds were in his coffee."

Many predict a plural marriage and presidential office.

Judy Collins recently (matter of days ago) did a concert in Riverside, California on July 25th, 2014 at the Fox Theater. Don MacLean was also on the bill that night. "Bye, Bye American Pie"

Judy Collins must still do 50-100 gigs a year, playing 12 string guitar and piano.

She has two different acts, a conventional concert of songs and a biographical trip through her career.

She has developed a rather mischievous sense of humour; Steve Stills and I had a affair. It was a wonderful experience - for him.

One of the most moving renditions of I never will marry by LR puts a beautiful vulnerability into the song and says lots about being young, in love and in despair and yet somehow it's a joy. If you do nothing else today, give it a listen!
