Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Aug 14 - 03:40 AM Well done! Stick with it. You have discovered that, when one has been a smoker, the pleasure of NOT smoking, if one can achieve it, is much greater than any pleasure that smoking can bring. I stopped smoking on 3 April 1975 -- nearly 40 years now. Don't regret it for a second. ≈M≈ |

Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 21 Aug 14 - 04:40 AM well done! I used to love fags. I used to revel in old fashioned tobacconists - there used to be one in every high street. however if you can kick it, its for the best. no more huffing and puffing when you climb stairs. much more money in your pocket. less long term health risks, and that bill can turn up for immediate payment anytime. go for it! you're doing well ! |

Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: Dave Hanson Date: 21 Aug 14 - 07:38 AM I stopped 24 years ago after being a heavy smoker for many years, it was harder to give up the eating which compensated for it, but after a health warning from my doctor I've been on a diet since may and I've lost 3 stone, all down to shear willpower. Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 21 Aug 14 - 08:12 AM You will always be a smoker, maybe one not partaking in the practice, but the addiction will always be there. I stopped for over nine years and then started again (got a job with the health service!) I've just managed to stop again and hopefully can stay off them permanently but I'm also aware it is very easy to start again even after a prolonged spell of not smoking. |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Aug 14 - 08:27 AM No. Honestly, my addiction went long since. I couldn't contemplate smoking now, after 39 years! And, for the record, when I stopped I was on 40 a day -- not even cigarettes, but small cigars, which I inhaled. ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: Rapparee Date: 21 Aug 14 - 09:35 AM Inhaling cigar smoke is like inhaling pipe smoke: first the choking, then the dry retching. I know because I did both back when I usually smoked a pipe. Good on ya, Skipy, and keep on keepin' on! |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Aug 14 - 10:07 AM I've lost a brother, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law who died relatively young because they were smokers. Anybody who stops, I am glad for you! And glad for your near and dear. |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: ChanteyLass Date: 21 Aug 14 - 03:26 PM Yay, Skipy! And yay to everyone else who has quit smoking! In addition to better health, you'll be able to spend some money on better things! |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 21 Aug 14 - 06:59 PM I have taken up smoking within the last 12 months. I have not been a smoker before. Tobacco relaxes, it calms, it helps concentration. It does everything the printed advertisements of the 40's, 50's 60's promised. I am very happy with one non-filtered, commercial cig each evening. Sincerely, Gargoyle Perhaps, the message to the younger generation is "delayed gratification". |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: Stanron Date: 21 Aug 14 - 09:13 PM I gave up for the last time in 1984. After two weeks I rolled a cig for my wife. (She'd said "You have to give up or I won't be able to". So I did but she didn't). Anyhow I lit the cig and took one drag. It tasted like I'd licked the inside of a well used ash tray. I was cured. Eight years later when we divorced she was still smoking. So thirty years later I reckon I would be long dead if I hadn't stopped smoking. I've no regrets at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: LadyJean Date: 22 Aug 14 - 12:15 AM Keep up the good work. My sister quit two years ago. Let me tell you where you do NOT want to be on a rainy day. In a tent, with someone who has just quit smoking the week before. But she has gone back to being human again. I'm not a smoker. I was never tempted. I have other bad habits. But if you have something to occupy both hands it helps. Mom took up potting, and quit smoking because she couldn't sit at the wheel and smoke. |
Subject: RE: BS: I,ve given up smoking! From: Rog Peek Date: 22 Aug 14 - 05:57 PM I gave up smoking in 1976 aged 29 smoking 30 a day plus. Reason? Concern for how it might affect my future health. At the time I said I would take it up again when I retired as it wouldn't make much difference then. Of course, my perception changed when I got there. Am still a non-smoker, and will remain so.
