Subject: Chord Req: Mennonite Hymn-Sweetly Resting From: jeffpoet Date: 03 Sep 14 - 06:17 PM There's an exquisite Mennonite hymn 'Sweetly Resting' http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Sweetly_Resting/ The sheet music is on the above web site. I have had several attempts at adding guitar chords but can't seem to get them right. Is there someone out there please who could look at the sheet music and insert the correct chords for me. Thanks. The problem isn't the chords, it's the scales being played with them. There's only one odd chord there and it's an E if you play in the key of D, I think. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Mennonite Hymn-Sweetly Resting From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 04 Sep 14 - 11:04 AM I enjoy this kind of project. If you don't mind, Guest #, I will change the song to the key of D and work out some chords for it. If you want to work out the chords for the original E flat, that would be nice too. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Mennonite Hymn-Sweetly Resting From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 04 Sep 14 - 11:47 AM I've made a MIDI and will send it to Joe, so you can hear it. Jeffpoet, I realize you may know all this stuff, but I'm going to write it here so that future catters who want to play the song can see it. 'Sweetly Resting' was written in the guitar unfriendly key of E-flat, so I changed it to D, using Noteworthy Composer. It is also in the unfamiliar time of 3/2, so I put the chords in as half notes, so you can hear how the beats go. I'm sure the song starts with two pick-up notes (both quarter notes), so I wrote it that way. Also, many measures end with two quarter notes (usually an E and a D) which don't go with any chord. What do you do? You have two choices. You can not play the guitar. Simply don't hit anything, and let the sound die away. (This is noted as N.C., meaning 'no chord.')Or you can hit the note A, because A goes with the note E and the note D. Where is the note A? It's the second string down from your chin. Another way is to figure out the chord for every single quarter note, but I think that will get too fussy and will interfere with the slow, peaceful theme of the song. The MIDI shows both methods. Thanks for bringing this pretty song to our attention. In the D rif-ted N.C.rock I'm D res-ting; G Safe-ly D shel-tered, N.C. I a- A bide. N.C.There no D foes nor N.C.storms mo- D lest me, G While with- D in the A cleft I D hide. Now I'm res-ting, sweet-ly res-ting, In the A cleft D once A made D for A me. D Je-sus, bles-sèd Rock of A-ges, G I will D hide my- A or A7 self in D Thee. I don't have time to proof this, so check it out first. |

I'll try again and we'll get a MIDI with the strong 3/2 bass I spoke of. Click to play-leeneia (joeweb) |
