Subject: Folklore: NYC 'local' famous folksingers From: lefthanded guitar Date: 18 Sep 14 - 07:11 PM I was recently asked if I know the names of some renowned folk musicans still living in the NYC area- and surprised my self by not being able to name many (I use the term 'folk' in the broadest sense, meaning singer-songwriters in particular, and including so called Americana and country and acoustic blues players besides traditional musicians). All I could come up with was Steve Earle. Danny Kalb certainly qualifies in my book. And not sure if John Sebastian is still here. Surely there must be many many more even if Dylan is no longer strolling positively down 4th street. Got any names? thanx. |

Subject: RE: NYC 'local' famous folksingers From: lefthanded guitar Date: 19 Sep 14 - 04:38 PM Thanks again. Keep 'em coming, please, as they occur to you. I also remembered that Ingrid Michaelson (not strictly folk, but surely singer- songwriter) hails from and lives in NYC. I didn't know Judy Collins lives here. Terrific. Thought she'd be in Colorado..I've seen her perform here many times, though, so it makes sense. I think Peter Yarrow may be in the area as well. As an aside, I've gotten to wondering where aspiring folksingers and singer/songwriters go now. Nashville?? L.A. ? Please don't say America's Got Talent. Where IS the music scene now ( in fact where ARE Dylan, Baez, Tom Rush, etc these days ?), or is it all on the internet now.??? |
Subject: RE: NYC 'local' famous folksingers From: Elmore Date: 19 Sep 14 - 08:51 PM Dylan and Joan Baez live (not together) in California when not on the road. Tom Rush lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for quite a while, but I believe he moved back to New Hampshire in recent years. |
