Subject: RE: Irish place-name pronunciation help! From: MartinRyan Date: 01 Oct 14 - 04:49 AM OK - here goes: Glendalough : glen - da - lock i.e. stress last syllable. Guttural ch as in Sassenach. Short second syllable. Dun Aengus Doon - ain - gus . First syllable often shortened to "Dun" but the long sound is more correct. Hard "g" as in "good" Brú na Bóinne : Brew-na-Bo-in-ye ("ye" as in "yelp"!) . Some dialectical variation in Irish language. Croagh Patrick : Croke Patrick (long "o" sound). You will also, often, hear it as "Crow Patrick". Stress the "Pat". Kilmainham : Kill - main - um |
