Subject: New Singaround/Session in Kent
From: GUEST,Sinéad
Date: 21 Oct 14 - 04:23 PM

Hello, Sinéad here. I used to post here sometime ago, not sure if you remember me.

Anyway!

I have set up a new singaround in Kent. I'll post the facebook link below, but I'll add the information here too, of course.

https://www.facebook.com/events/360716087435118/360721457434581/?notif_t=plan_mall_activity

"The Three Ravens Folk Club is up and running and will be holding its first event at Stepping Stones Studio, located right next to the museum in Maidstone, 2 minute walk away from Maidstone East Train Station and 5 minutes from bus stops.

The evening will run as follows;

20:00-20:15- Tunes
20:15-20:45- Individual/group songs
20:45-21:00- Chorus songs (bring your best harmonies please!)*
21:00-21:30- Break- small snacks provided/raffle
21:30-21:45- Tunes
21:45-22:15- Individual/group songs
22:15-22:45- House songs*
22:45-23:00- Tunes

* A house song is simply a chorus song that we sing at each session. This means that by the end of a season we should all know the words and have thought of 657 different harmonies to use... which means the last singing session of the season will be the best yet.

The House songs for this season are:

Here's Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy:

Pleasant and Delightful:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWLMRiHhyQk

Thousands or More:

The Cocks Are Crowing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiD0h9eEsXg&list=PLCEA5D670387E72C8&index=8

Lyric sheets will be available for these songs.

So yes, please bring along all your lovely traditional songs and lets do some singing! Accompanied/unaccompanied/groups/tone deaf/musically profound all welcome. :)

Use this page to organise car shares and lifts- plenty of free parking close by at this time of night too. Please contact me if you need any information about travelling/car buddies/song information... or err, anything really. If you can't come but know some people who might fancy it, please do share."

As a young person myself (I'm 22), I'm expecting a lot of my networks that arrive will be 30 and under, but I was really hoping some more experienced folkies would show up too. The project not only aims to keep community singing and traditional song alive but to bridge inter-generational gaps too.

If anyone has any drinks requests, please let me know and I'll pass this on to the studio.

Thanks! :)

Sinéad.

All info. is on the link and should be available to public and FB users alike, but the date is November the 24th.

Thanks Nic. This is just a guide to ensure there is a nice balance of tunes/singing/solos and won't run like clockwork.

Hope to see you there :)

Well done Sinead.
Your programme looks very much like what our morris, after dance, sing arounds were - tunes for everyone to join in - an individual spot for each performer - and some collective songs that everybody knew. The mix worked very well and many publicans said it was the music rather than the dancing they looked forward to.
There is not much that happens in Maidstone apart from Penny's invited session. Take care with crib sheets though - if you are not careful everyone will start brining music stands and using words instead of learning their songs and tunes - which can become dire.

" nice balance of tunes/singing/solos "
...........but there's only 45 mins of tunes out of 3 hours!!

Just call it a singaround, cos its certainly not a session!

Hope it goes well

TS

Ah a typo from me Kevin; it is indeed the 25th. Tuesday the 25th.

TS, thanks for your support. As someone who has been to singarounds and sessions over the past 6 years in Kent and Maidstone, it seems to me that most are singers so I've allocated most time to that for the time being. But as stated above, these timing aren't rigid, just to give some balance across the evening but everything will be played by ear; obviously if a lot of instrumentalists turn up and only a few singers then I won't be cutting anyone off!

Good Gel. Put an end to the Mudcat Tome and music stand. If I, at 75 can learn new songs then these young un's should be able to Good Luck and do not be put off with a slow start Singarounds are like wine and friendships they take time to mature and develop

Is this a one off or do you plan it as a regular event?

We would like it to be regular but the venue is very popular and has lots of people fighting for their project to have a slot. If it goes well they will give us a regular monthly slot, which will most likely be the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

I'll be there Sinéad. Great to see a young person organising something like this. I remember you from the Seven Stars at Foots Cray, sadly now turned into a Gastropub with no room for music.

A great night was had by all last night, excellent singing and playing and what a lovely venue, the ambience was amazing and it's always good to sing in different venues and to meet new people. Well done Sinead for organising this event and i am looking forward to the next one in December.

Cheers

Wee Jock (John Matthews)
