Fluffy and white, brown, mottled or pinto, please just learn to skin and clean the carcass well enough that I am not picking fur out of my teeth after the meal. Same for squirrels, deer, groundhogs, or the unrestrained hair(hare?)dos of cooks and wait staff.

The problem of sharp bones comes from buying rabbit joints from the butcher/supermarket, which have been chopped haphazardly leaving splinters of bone.
Buy a whole rabbit and joint it carefully yourself.

As always, there are several versions of the superstition. I was brought up to the one that you only say it [in the plural, BTW, as 'White rabbits'] on waking on the first day of the month in which your own birthday, or that of someone particularly close, occurs. My wife Emma knows exactly the same version; we both originated in N London, which may have something to do with it. We also have birthdays in the same month, so can say it for one another simultaneously.

Interesting Mike. I was born on St David's Day, which is the first of the month I suppose. I was always led to believe it was a St David's Day tradition to shout white rabbits if you were a) Welsh and b) into that sort of thing. Media being what it is, I suppose there are as many versions as there are books claiming them.

But I bow to your first hand knowledge of pre Caxton days.

Musket, I wondered which first you were born on, so my next question since you've answered that is why do the Welsh have a reputation for leeking?

Also, did you know rabbits' arms aren't attached to their bodies by bone, so they are very easy to take apart?

I heard as a teenager that if "rabbit rabbit" was the very first thing a girl said on the first of the month, she wouldn't get pregnant that month. I never asked if anybody had remembered to say it, though...

No idea about the Welsh. I used to have a girlfriend in Dollgellu and it was a bugger driving to see her... Regarding becoming a honorary Welshman, I couldn't get my head between the bars of the gate. (Look it up if you don't know it, or pay good money when I am rarely asked to appear in a concert.)

As a kid, I was taught how to take a rabbit's jacket off, gut and bone it. Only last week, we had rabbit and leek pie. The rabbit was off a field at the back of the garden and we pay a bloke to keep the rabbits down, and the leek was from said garden.

It wasnt white though. Fluffy rabbits don't have the taste of a wild coney.

My brother's kids looked after my sister's kids' guinea pig when they went on holiday. They put it in with their rabbit.

Difficult to explain to toddlers, but their guinea pig went to heaven etc whilst they were on holiday.

Basically, it got shagged to death....

Yeah, we had to separate our kids' guinea pig and rabbit for the same reason. Poor little guinea pig had an arse like a half-chewed blood orange. Make sure you only get a girl rabbit is my advice.

In all honesty, the only way the Lion's birthday was known to me, was because I looked at the music thread, right wing folk, and somebody wished him a happy birthday and he acknowledged it....so that's how the wish got posted here.
