I am trying to learn Rev. Gary Davis's "Cincinnati Flow Rag" (Whew! It should be called "Murray's Waterloo"). I also refered to it recently in a newsgroup and I realize that I don't quite know what the title means.

Is this a flow rag named after Cincinnati? In that case what is a flow rag? Or is it a rag about (the) Cincinnati Flow, in which case what is Cincinnati Flow?

I would be interested not only in the answers to these questions but the history of the piece. Did Gary Davis write it or is it an arrangement of a turn or the century piano piece (or none of the above?)

Murray

That's a great piece, I learned it a long time ago off Davis' Ragtime Guitar LP and still play it. The guy you might want to talk to is Stefan Grossman. I believe he recorded it at the Reverend's home and could probably answer your questions. He frequently posts messages here (the Woodshed). First attempt at blue clicky thing, hope it works.

Regards, Frankie

Frankie, sorry, I tried. There seems to be something wrong with the address itself. If you go to http://paradise-web.com/plus/, (no 'www') there's a registration form. Maybe you have to register to get to the forum?

Thanks Jeri, I've checked the address and it seems ok. The forum I'm referring to is called The Woodshed and is found at Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop which requires no registration and can be found on a search engine.

Gee, Frankie, with all that trouble you took, I already have the address of the Woodshed:-); but thanks for reminding me about it. My VDU is on the fritz and I can only operate in text mode, which makes it difficult to use that site. By the way what was the LP called? Has it ever come out in CD?

No sweat Murray, I obviously need the practice. The name of the LP is REV. GARY DAVIS RAGTIME GUITAR (Kicking Mule 106) wether it's been reissued I can't say but you might check elderly.com or direcly w/ Stefan when you're able. I know that Grossman recently released a 3 CD Davis complilation (maybe on Shanachie) so you might want to look into that.

Regards, Frankie

To whoever (Jeri?) put the clicky things on my previous posting, thanks.

I have this on a Rev. Gary Davis CD called Ragtime and Blues. It was released on the Shanachie label and has the added bonus of the liner notes containing both Music and Tab for this and Walking Dog Blues. I would highly recommend this CD.

Being Canadian I special ordered this from Canadian retailer CD Plus, but here's what I found on Amazon.com

1. Walkin' Dog Blues 2. Cincinnati Flow Rag 3. She's Funny That Way (I Got a Woman Crazy for Me) 4. Whoopin' Blues 5. Twelve Sticks 6. Children of the Zion 7. Buck Rag 8. Hesitation Blues 9. C-Rag 10. Baby, Let Me Lay It on You 11. Cocaine Blues 12. Buck Dance 13. Candy Man 14. Wall Hollow Blues 15. Little Boy, Little Boy Who Made Your Britches 16. Whistin' Blues

Sorry, the title of this CD is in fact "Blues and Ragtime", not "Ragtime and Blues" as I posted above.

I must add that it was Brother Fieldings Radio show that introduced me to Rev. Gary Davis. I am forever indebted.

Thanks Steve. I will look for it in our local "folk music" shop and if I don't find it I will order it online from one of the Mudcat supporters.

Me and my big mouth. When I posted that both the Tab and Music to Cincinnati Flow Rag was in the liner notes of this CD I was flat wrong. I had loaned it to my sister and picked it up last night. It does however have tab and Music to Walkin' Dog Blues (14 Verses), Buck Rag, Cocaine Blues, Hesitation Blues, and Baby Let Me Lay It On You. I just assumed that Cincinnati Flow Rag was one of the tabs. It is still a wonderful CD.

I have e-mailed Murray with my apologies, I hope that I didn't mess up anyone else.
