Sunday 7 December 2014
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m. Places £25
Elephant & Castle White Hill Lewes BN7 2DJ

Brian Peters has been singing some of the greatest Child Ballads for many years, but established his reputation as one of their leading researchers & performers with the ballad CD 'Songs of Trial & Triumph'.
In this forum Brian will bring his expertise in locating, refurbishing, arranging & singing the greatest ballads, & also his knowledge of the ballads that you bring yourselves, including comparative versions & fascinating source recordings from the tradition.

Stephen Winick, of the Library of Congress, Washington DC, says: 'Brian Peters has long been one of the very best performers in the field of English traditional song & music,. His Child ballads embody tragedy, action, excitement & humour ... unusual ballads such as Sir Aldingar & False Foudrage shimmer with magic & murder.'

You are invited to bring along at least one traditional ballad of your choice to sing & talk about. To avoid clashes with other contributors. please state your preferred ballad in advance. If your choice has already been taken, we will let you know so that you can choose another. If in doubt about what counts as a ballad, please email me.

Just wish I weren't so far away!

It's a real treat to hear someone as knowledgeable as Brian talk about ballads "in the round" -- collection history, themes and folklore, tunes, performance -- with a proper passion which he certainly communicates. He makes learning a pleasure.

Enjoy your weekend, Valmai et al, and try not to make the rest of us too jealous.

Everyone who CAN get to these events, SHOULD do. Brian Peters is one of our folk scene treasures. Go,listen, learn, and be hugely entertained at the same time. I too wish I didn't live so far away.

We could still fit in a few more people. If you plan to come, email me on valmaigoodyear[at]aol[dot]com and bring the right money in cash on the day as there isn't now time to put a cheque through the club's account.
