I sing this song in the key of C# which I think suits my voice. (I actually place my capo at the 4th fret and use A D and E7)
Perhaps listening to a different version from John Tams might help with your problem in getting the melody.
Mine can be found at:

Over The Hills And Far Away

A    G   F#    E   D    B   B
O'er the hills and o'er the Main,
F#GA   G    F# E G   A   E
To Flanders Portugal and Spain,
F# G A      G F#    E   D BG
King George commands and we obey.
B A G   A    E   G   E E
Over the hills and far away.

All in one octave except for the AGA (...er the hills...)in the last line which dips into a lower octave. Key of D. Notes are roughly where they fall with the syllables. This is the way I remember Tams version.

Just put John Tams' name in YouTube, and you get several clips of him singing the song.

A friend has asked me to play the Tams version of over the hills and far away for him to sing to. The chords are no problem and I can get most of the tune ok but I cannot get the melody of the "over the hills and far away" line for some reason and I cannot find it anywhere on the net (plenty of other settings, but not the one he wants). Please can anyone help?
