Think back, back, back all those many years ago when we had 45's & LPs and record players. Do you remember the first LP you ever bought?
(Not bought by your parents or older brother or sister but YOU)

Well I do actually remember the first LP I bought with my own little money. I was only 9 or 10 years old. It was by Bobby Vee and it was called "Rubber Ball" I had a little crush on Bobby Vee because I thought he was so cute. I really liked the song "Rubber Ball" (also title of the LP) which was a big hit for him and I liked all the songs on the LP.

Donovan - "CATCH THE WIND" Then I kept buying new Donovan albums whenever they were at my local record shop. And Donovan was REAL CUTE TOO! :-) Loved his voice, loved his songs and yes, it was his
LP "CATCH YTHE WIND" GREAT PHOTO OF HIM ON THAT LP COVER!
I still own it as well as all of his albums! Ah yes, I am a huge DONOVAN FAN. :-))

My first LP was West Side Story - the stage show, before the movie, about 1960. And my first single was Tom Hark from Elias and his ZigZag Jive Flutes. That was on the Hit Parade in about 1958.I still have them but don't play them now.

I don't remember my first LP, but the first record I bought was a single for my 12th birthday in 1964.

It was Little Pattie's double A-side He's My Blonde Headed, Stompie Wompie, Real Gone Surfer Boy yeh yeh yeh yeh / Stomping at Maroubra - one of Sydney's iconic surfing beaches

today I dunno why as I never liked the sun & beach & could barely swim

Back, back? You been in a record store recently? Take Piccadilly Records in Manchester (UK), which is now mostly vinyl. Even in the mainstream bands are releasing their album on vinyl as well as CD these days. Our records of the year are Love Letters by Metronomy and LP1 by FKA Twiggs - naturally we have both the CD and the vinyl versions for our in-car & domestic pleasure. The covers are nicer on vinyl too! The new David Bowie single comes in a nice 10" edition with unique extras...

Anyhoo, my first LP was Gorilla by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. I got it with a token for Xmas 67 when I was 6. Still a great favourite, though sadly my original is long gone...

A cheap label (Ace of Clubs I think) issue of Buddy Holly's Decca recordings in Nashville. It was called That'll Be The Day and contained the original solo version of that song recorded before the Crickets remade it and credited to Alison/Holly as the writers - not Holly/Alison/Petty as in the crickets recording. It would 1964 or 65 when I bought it.

The first was a part share in A Hard Days Night. First one I bought all by myself was John Mayall 'Crusade'. I still have it in glorious mono.

Hooked me on Roy Harper - "Nobody's got any Money in the Summer" - Leonard Cohen, and, er, Moby Grape. Other goid stuff, too; I still listen to it.

I can't remember exactly.
LPs were expensive, and my pocket money for a long time was only 20 pence per week..
I had to wait for birthdays and xmas, when my parents did lovingly overindulge me,
even though they were low wage earners..
So I got most LPs on the wish list I eagerly presented to them.

I reckon the first LP I bought myself, would have been on a cheap budget lable.

Quite possibly Decca's "The World of David Bowie" compilation.
That dodgy one with the Ziggy Stardust era cover photo,
concealing cash-in contents from his mid 60s Anthony Newley soundalike phase.
Or, that mono for stereo processed MFP The Move "Fire Brigade" LP
with a really excellent 'best of' track list.

But I definitely do remember the first 7" singles I saved up for and bought myself.

That was a serious moment of transition from mere kid to real teenager.. circa 1972...

Lindisfarne - "Lady Eleanor" [the re-release] and "Son of my Father" - Chicory Tip.

That combination of 7 inchers indicating my lifelong affinity for droning folkie neo-psychedelia
and insistent analog synth riffs & grooves...

it cost ten bob. can't remember the name of the label - the logo was a top hat.

lightning hopkins one side/sonny and brownie on the other.

my mother was disgusted - it sounds like old drunken men singing in a cellar.....she said. the generation war took few prisoners.

i loved it. learned every run on th Hopkins side til there were deep grooves gouged out. learned them in the wrong key though.

now i am an old drunken man singing in cellars when invited.

The first LP I bought was "Smiley Smile" by the Beach Boys and a bit of a disappointment.
The second was "Nice" by the Nice, which was not a dissapointment.

My very first LP was a live record by Joan Baez called "Europa" containing recordings made in Italy (Milan) and Vienna back in 1967. I still have it.

One day, by mistake, I played the album at 45rpm and Elvis suddenly turned into Eartha Kitt!

What a bargain! Two albums for the price of one!

The soundtrack from 'The Endless Summer.' It was during the waning days of surf music and the album was not a particularly good example of the genre but I loved the movie.

It didn't help Lightnin Hopkins any, but I started buying lps from the cutout (corner cut off deep discount) bin for 33 cents, and bought Coffeehouse Blues and Autobiography in Blues. It was also a bonus introduction to Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Big Joe Williams....

With my first wage after leaving school (most LPs had been Christmas/Birthday presents before that) was "Everly Brothers Sing Great Country Hits" I've lost the original LP but I have it on CD and still listen to it.

I'm not sure which came first, but they were both 10" LPs in August 1955. Before that, it was all 78 singles.

Beatles For Sale on the day it came out. I bought every Beatles record after that on the day they came out. Like all LPs in those days, it cost me thirty-two bob. Singles were six and eight. I never screamed when I heard the Beatles though, not once.

That was Lightin' Sonny and Brownie, and it was released in Britain on the Society Label. SOC 1009 in fact. It was recorded in 1960 at some coffee house or other in Los Angeles, and various other bits of that evening came out on various labels. The whole shebang was, I think, eventually re-issued on a Capitol double CD.

Whatever. I thought it was absolutely bloody marvellous and best of all it only cost ten bob.

My first folk one was "Alex Campbell Live": I still have it, and still have a turntable to play it on, tho' it has since come out on CD. Still sing some of the songs on it too.
First classical one was probably highlights from "The Magic Flute" as we did a shortened version of it at school!

That would be the Buddy Holly pre-Crickets LP on Decca. Found a used DJ copy in a Chicago record store.

Later sold it for big bucks - wish I hadn't.
