Just in time for this festive season, are Lani Herrmann's corrected lyrics for her song, "The Pickle Tree Carol." She says that other than the title, the lyrics in the Digital Tradition are almost correct. I asked her to send lyrics that are perfect, and she did.

[Lani's submission] THE PICKLE TREE CAROL (c 1990 Lani Herrmann) Joseph was an old man And an old man was he, But still he courted Mary To gain a family. But still he courted Mary To gain a family. As they were walking Along so carefully, Mary cries out to Joseph, A pickle for me. A pickle[!] cries Joseph Now how can that be? Two miles to the nearest deli Is too [many] for me[!] I must have a pickle, [Or] I shall go wild And by the way Joseph, We have a little child. [Then] Joseph in anger jumped up And also down He [cried], it isn't kosher[;] You've been fooling around[!] Then up piped little Jesus From in his mother's [tent] ! [Please, Dad,] give her a pickle And stop this argument. And as they stood amazed By the side of the road A tree all full of pickles Let down its heavy load. Riggy Rackin sent me a link to a YouTube recording of a performance of "Pickle Tree Carol" by Lani Herrmann with the In Harmony's Way group.
Yes, the melody is quite different from "Cherry Tree Carol." I should have believed Lani about how the melody was different.
I would see her at San Francisco's Camp Harmony the week after Christmas every year for almost twenty years, and I learned a lot from her.
May she rest in peace.
