Our first grandkid Euan Patrick Richards was born at stupid early o'clock yesterday morning to our son Stephen The Drummer and his wife Carly The Horn Player.

Himself and I are very pleased, and are wondering which instrument young Euan will choose.

The Minnesota farmers where I grew up would nudge a first time Grandpa and say "I hear you've been sleeping with someone's Granny!"

Thank you all! Not so much of the Grandma.....I am Grandmama, if you please. It befits the cultured urbane woman as what I am.

Carly The Horn Player has many other instruments including a uke which, she tells me, she can't play. Stephen The Drummer has an embarrassingly huge collection of cymbals and drums which will probably be off-limits for a while.

We don't have a fiddler in the family.....or a bagpiper......

Ebbie, I wish! Actually Himself and I are a little old to be first time grandparents, many of our friends have had grandchildren for years and aren't as old as we are. Or their children are now grandparents themselves.

We reckon it takes time for quality to come out.

We have seen pics online (they live many hours south of us) and, considering Euan was three weeks early, he is nicely filled out. He doesn't have the scrawny undercooked look that some babies have, and he doesn't look like E.T., which some babies do.

He looks a bit like Buddha......

My daughter's birthday is on Dec. 23...it is actually a crazy time to be born....busy....I can hardly believe it i now have 5 grandchildren..

I am a similar age to one of my cousins. Her father, my uncle gave me a drum one year- my mother wrapped it up and gave it to my cousin on her birthday!

Word of advice, though - having your birthday so near Christmas can be frustrating, so don't do joint pressies (unless they're expensive ones, then it's OK) :-)

Laurel, Stephen The Drummer hates "Little Drummer Boy" with a passion.....he has been playing drums for 25 years and has lost count of the number of Christmas gigs at which he's had to play it. It's very boring to play.

Somehow I don't think it will be at the top of Euan's Christmas play list.

The other day I heard someone say they had 100% increase in the number of grandchildren, as a new one was born last week the day before ours. I'm still trying to work out whether he meant he now has one, or two!

Young Euan has a good set of lungs on him, we spoke to them this afternoon and he could be heard nine hours away.

Hi Jennie

Many congratulations. Nothing wrong with sleeping with a Grandmother -
I have been doing it for nearly 30 years.

We have grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I taught eldest grandson guitar. He tried the usual school instruments but turned up home one day with a cello !!!! so I got my old guitar out and he has done very well with it.

The others have shown more interest in sport not music.

Great-grandson though has shown early interest in thumping things so we bought him a small child's drum set. He is showing early signs of understanding rhythm.

His Mother and father are now talking to us...LOL
