So sad to hear of Leonard Nimoy's death. I was such a staunch Trek fan as a kid that I refused to watch the show that replaced it for years, (missed some prime Laugh-In, but I held out) never got into going to the conventions, though

Had the chance to see him act live - as Sherlock Holmes (and amusingly, Alan Seus as Moriarty) at the Cleveland Playhouse. More fun was meeting him when he came to Cleveland to do his one man show Vincent, where he played Theo VanGogh. He lectured before the show at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where I was then a student. He used back projections of VanGogh's paintings in the show, and part of his lecture to art students was an unforgettable example of why we should always look at the ACTUAL piece of art when we could and not trust Art History class slides. He showed us the very same painting as shown in slides from 3 different sources - and they were like three different color ways of a print. Made me glad I was learning art history in a place with a world class museum. I have a cherished picture I took of him examining slides in the CIA library.

He was an interesting man, and I'm glad I met him.

Sad to hear. By coincidence, a Comicon-type event is happening this weekend in our city. I'm sure Mr. Nimoy's passing will alter both the tone and content of that event a bit. I can't imagine anyone more iconic to the sci-fi/fantasy crowd.

He was a singer. He had some albums out. I listened years ago and wasn't a fan, but he may have improved. Mostly, he was Mr. Spock for generations of television and movie viewers.

The title of Leonard Nimoy's autobiography was "I Am Not Spock," and that so offended some fans that he followed it with a second, "I Am Spock."

The actor who won a permanent place on the altar of pop culture for his portrayal of Mr. Spock on "Star Trek," was almost as famous for wanting to be remembered for other things.

And that is, of course, highly illogical.

It's hard to think of another star who was so closely and affectionately identified with a single role. Even George Reeves, the first television Superman, was also one of the Tarleton twins in "Gone With the Wind."

It's even harder to think of a television character that so fully embodied and defined a personality type. Just as Scrooge became synonymous with miser, and Peter Pan became a syndrome, Spock was dispassion personified.

Crime fiction and the movies offered Sherlock Holmes as the ultimate aloof, brainy hero. But until "Star Trek," television didn't really have anyone that distinctively — and irresistibly — coldblooded, cerebral and punctilious. (Mr. Peabody of the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon show came close, but he was a beagle and quite affectionate in his fusty way.) . . .

I think in coming days and weeks you'll see a lot of scientists and philosophers waxing nostalgic on the Spock character in particular and Star Trek in general and they way they inspired science and ethics. Celebrities and Scientists. The Prime Directive (do not interfere) may have been one of the most influential philosophical ideas out of the program (attributable to Roddenberry, but enforced by Kirk, Spock, and the rest).

My very favorite Spock scene is him not being Herbert. Without automatic prejudice against hippies, you can totally reach.
