Subject: RE: BBC Radio 4 programme on Jock Purdon From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 02 Mar 15 - 12:22 PM I remember the first time we invited Jock to Whitby, listening to him in the Workingmens Club. Mike Waterson, who was sitting beside me, turned to me and said "Jock doesn't take any prisoners does he?" Hypocrits of any political colour were fair game to Jock! |

Subject: RE: BBC Radio 4 programme on Jock Purdon From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 04 Mar 15 - 05:16 AM As a friend said- 'who appointed Billy Bragg as the modern Woody Guthrie?'- still he did a decent job of this. Jock can, as BB said, still be seen on the 'Cotia banner, now housed in the Washington Arts Centre except when in use. His likeness is carried proudly into Durham every summer at the Miners' Gala along with his marra Jack Elliot. The banner's motto is 'Ye brave bold men of 'Cotia' - after one of Jock's songs and it will be led into Durham again in July by Jack's daughter Doreen, husband Bryan and friends. This will continue as long as us old codgers can manage it. |
Subject: RE: BBC Radio 4 programme on Jock Purdon From: GUEST,henryp Date: 04 Mar 15 - 05:30 AM The BBC like a well-known figure as the presenter. They think more people will be drawn to a Billy Bragg programme than a Jock Purdon one, and they are probably right. Even though not many coal-mines left in Burton Bradstock now. |
Subject: RE: BBC Radio 4 programme on Jock Purdon From: Dave Hanson Date: 04 Mar 15 - 07:27 AM Woody's daughter Norah got in touch with Billy Bragg and asked him to record some of Woody's un-recorded and unpublished songs, so I guess, Woody's daughter had a hand in appointing him. Dave H |
