Subject: fishsongs From: Mary G Date: 28 Nov 99 - 12:23 AM I know lots of people like fish songs...or fishallgone songs....I am putting some on a website...mmight be duplicating some effort here but I haven't figured out everything on searching this database...so if anyone has favorite songs that are old enough to not have copyright concerns, or they have written themselves, I would be glad to put them up on a very simple page....each person could have his/her own page... http://www.angelfire.com/wv/fishsongs I just have mine up so far and they tend to be about the Columbia River stuff...goodbye salmon..but it is for everybody...and if anyone ever wants to use any song of mine for any purpose they don't have to ask.... mg |

I sincerely hope you do alot more work on your site before you go posting your pages for public display....it is like week-old underwear...something best done without...
Take a three hour lesson on the html pages on this site and you will be well ahead of the game...
My personal preference for your page's lead would be...."The Song of the Fishes." |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: _gargoyle Date: 28 Nov 99 - 12:34 AM It is done in a steady 3/4 rhythm and it is found right here: SONG OF THE FISHES |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Kernow John Date: 28 Nov 99 - 05:48 PM Mary I tried to post you a private message but was unable to find details. Please take no notice of the above reply I will refrain from commenting on the many inadequacies of the person concerned. Go ahead post your pages, if people don't like it they don't have to look. It would be nice to have tunes to some of your songs. Go for it and enjot it. Regards Baz |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Kernow John Date: 28 Nov 99 - 05:49 PM Enjot it? Enjoy it Baz |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Willie-O Date: 28 Nov 99 - 05:55 PM fishallgone songs...that's a true complain ennit. My all time favorite is probably "Peter's Dream" by Lennie Gallant. A song with a classical construction, Jesus on the water, not a lot of whining and nostalgia, a suitably cathartically violent climax, no happy ending, and three chords maybe four. Like most fishallgone songs though, it's newish and copyrighted. Bill C |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Mary Date: 28 Nov 99 - 06:32 PM Is it possible to post the lyrics to Peter's Dream here? mg |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: marcelloblues Date: 28 Nov 99 - 07:23 PM The first page of a Malcolm Lowry's book that I did read sometimes ago contains lyrics and music of the song of the fishermen from the Isle of Man. At this moment I can't remember anything else, but if you're interested I'll give you more info next time I get on this place. Maybe tomorrow, but I'm not sure 'bout the meaning of "tomorrow" 'cause of the difference of the hour (now in Rome-Italy is 1.20 AM), anyway I'll give you more info |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Barry Finn Date: 28 Nov 99 - 07:49 PM Some of my favorite fish all gone songs:
Empty Nets by Jim Paine
These, I'm sure would all have copyrights but they're are my favorites. |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: lamarca Date: 28 Nov 99 - 09:25 PM I'm a specialist in fish songs, myself...In addition to the titles Barry listed, here's some more, some of which I sing, some of which I'd like to...:
These are all recently composed songs about the death of the fishing industry (the ones Barry gave are all great, too)
These are about the itinerant workers who used to follow the herring fleets around England
There's many great songs about fishing fleet risks, disasters and wrecks, some of my favorites are:
Here's a list of the songs with "fish" as a keyword in the DT database: I really like "Astoria's Bar" and "Stella" on your page - are they recorded anywhere on a CD? |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: Mary Date: 28 Nov 99 - 11:18 PM Thanks to the last reply...I haven't figured out how to quote yet here....it's a good list but I can see we should put our heads together on this....there are some great songs out of B.C....Phil Thomas has undoubtedly collected some....one that is great that is sung a lot is by Linda Codaczek (SP???) about cutting salmon....and Brian Richardson has written multitudinous great songs....(or am I spacing on the name...Peterson??)...and of course the great Northwest favorite: Ain't no Nooky like Chinooky..no I don't have the words...and some classics like let me Fish of Cape St. Mary's..and Wave over Wave by Jim Payne.... well, I could make you a tape of those songs you mentioned but my recorder is lost so either you can wait till I find a way or just call me at 360-695-5443 and I'll sing them to you....I should be home tomorrow morning Pacific time.. mg |
Subject: RE: fishsongs From: lamarca Date: 29 Nov 99 - 10:54 AM Mary, just a suggestion for your site. You should list the author's name for those songs that are recently written, and, if you've transcribed them off a recording, who the singer was or which recording. That way authors and performers get credit for their work! Thanks for offering to record the songs I like - I'll wait until you have time and a way. E-mail me at lamarca@codon.nih.gov and I'll exchange addresses with you, and see if there's any songs I could send you in return! (We don't post home addresses here on the Web where the whole world has access...) Regards, Mary, too! |

Subject: RE: fishsongs From: marcelloblues Date: 29 Nov 99 - 07:19 PM Here are more info about the Isle of Man Fishermen's Hymn. Edited in 1962 from Jonathan Cape, London, Malcolm Lowry's book, "HEAR US O LORD FROM HEAVEN THY DWELLING PLACE", starts with the complete lyrics and piano arrangement. On the headline (top right), maybe the name of the author (I don't know): Peel Castle Sorry I don't know how to send the whole page, but maybe you already know this tune, or you can get it in some site that I ignore. For this moment, good luck, (this make me think that I don't remember any of Italian folk fishermen song, it's just a strange thing). Cheers |

Subject: Lyr Add: PETER'S DREAM (Lennie Gallant)^^ From: Willie-O Date: 29 Nov 99 - 09:00 PM Is it possible to post the lyrics to Peter's Dream here? mg Oh all right, I don't guess Lennie'd mind. I had the chance once to tell him how much I liked playing the song and what a great audience response it always gets--and he didn't ask me for royalties or anything (actually I think he was more worried about all the drool I was getting on his 1953 OO-18 -- a guitar to kill or die for.)
Peter's Dream I still get up before the day breaks How could they have let this happen Chorus: Last night I dreamed that I was sailin' What am I supposed to do now? Chorus: Last night I dreamed that I was sailin' Someone sang an old sea shanty
Then he took his father's shotgun (Chorus) I still get up before the day breaks
Gives me chills. Every time. Bill C |
