"How dare you. How dare you gin up racist fears of minority turnout for short-term political gain," Stewart said on "The Daily Show" on Wednesday night. "That's our thing. You know what? Now you've got a copyright infringement suit on your hands, pal!"

He did well in the election though.
Better than everyone predicted.

I wonder how this journalist knows what all American Jews think, and I wonder how relevant their views are, safe in America, compared to the Jews facing an uncertain future in Israel.

Well KoAH, there's this:

As Israelis digested the outcome of the elections in which Mr. Netanyahu, seeking a fourth term, won a decisive victory, they also began to confront the sharp social, religious and political fissures that crisscross the country. While Likud dominated in many northern and southern towns and cities, the Zionist Union, an alliance between the Labor Party and a small centrist faction, triumphed in largely secular, liberal Tel Aviv and its prosperous suburbs. The results exposed the widening gap between the "state of Tel Aviv" and the right-leaning "periphery," meaning the poorer areas beyond Israel's commercial center.

In the other Israel, across the social and political divide, there were few votes for the right. At Kibbutz Nirim, where two residents were killed by a mortar round from Gaza in the final hours of the war, more than 87 percent voted for the center-left Zionist Union or the leftist Meretz party.

He knew what he had to say to get elected, like all clever politicians do. He is now clarifying what he said. To wit:

"I haven't changed my policy, I never retracted my speech at Bar-Ilan University six years ago calling for a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes a Jewish state."

"What has changed is the reality,[Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] the Palestinian leader refuses to recognize the Jewish state and has made a pact with Hamas that calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, and every territory that is vacated today in the Middle East is taken up by Islamist forces. We want that to change so that we can realize a vision of real, sustained peace. I don't want a one-state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful two-state solution, but for that, circumstances have to change."

Rogue state now. The good people of Israel, who didn't vote any more to the right than before, must be dismayed.

The bit I found most chilling was him stood in front of a military map of The Middle East warning "the people" that Arabs were "mobilising" and "marching" towards polling booths.

The "Arabs" being voting citizens of Israel.

It's a bit like a leader of a party warning that black people are voting.

The snub by Obama whilst sycophantic leaders from The EU queued up to congratulate him was a joy to behold. Well done.

Well, Guest, if you're so concerned about saving lives, why are you not lamenting the inability of Hamas to set up road blocks all along the Gaza border? Or are you not like me after all, who's concerned about needless loss of life regardless of ethnicity? If you have priorities about which civilians ought to be killed first or in the largest numbers, would you care to apprise us of your ethnic preferences? How many lives do you think Israeli road blocks have saved? Or do you think there could be any other reasons for Israel, that bastion of democracy in the Middle East, to disrupt the free movement of one ethnic group of its citizens and not the other? Honestly, now...

They sometimes don't appear to have the full democratic right to move freely around their own country. They are stopped at road blocks purely on the grounds of their ethnicity. Imagine the outrage were it to happen here. And, let's face it, Keith, Bibi publicly expressed his panic when he perceived that they were wanting to express their full democratic rights en masse. Democratic rights on paper are just fine talk, Keith..

And here's another example of Arabs in Israel getting their full democratic rights. In East Jerusalem, Palestinians are currently being evicted and their homes demolished to make way for new illegal settlements. Wouldn't happen in Hertford, Keith. I await your justification or denial or request for proof. Or excuses. Or all four.

If you truly had a concern for equal rights you would be frothing at the mouth against those countries who are the real violators of human rights against minorities, women, gays etc. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey etc., etc. Instead you focus on the one country in the Middle East that has constitutionally guaranteed civil rights and liberties. You, my friend, are a bigot.

I have frothed at the mouth many times over the countries you mention in other contexts, never fear. Why, I was railing vehemently against Saudi Arabia on this forum just last week, and I have no time for Iran's regime. But this thread, with respect, old chap, appears to be about Mr Netanyahu's country. And I'd like to point out that poor human rights in one country does not justify poor human rights in another. It's a basic debating point usually lost on the likes of you, Keith and Teribus, unfortunately. "Constitutional rights" on paper are one thing. What actually happens on the ground is a whole nother. Anyone for having their house compulsorily bulldozed so that a member of another ethnic group can have your land for their house? I don't know whether you're a bigot or not. You certainly appear to be woefully and wilfully uniformed, which is a step along the way.

Wha....?
"If you truly had a concern for equal rights"
If you had any concern for human rights you would recognise the Israeli regime as war criminals
As it is, they are attempting to abolish the only International Court that has the power to deal with war crimes
That's Israel's concern for democracy.
"Israel's Liberal Democracy"

Yes, read The Guardian by all means. But never get all of your information from one source. This is a very complicated issue and will take knowledge, patience and a desire for peace on both sides to resolve.
Much of what has been expressed in this thread simply highlights the lack of understanding that many people have of the situation. There are no simple fixes. No, there is no one side or the other that is all wrong, or all right.
The state of Israel has a right to exist, it is essential to the Jewish world that it does so. Palestinians also need a state. None of this will be accomplished by spouting the kind of rants that I see here.

"I believe that I agreed that there must be a Palestinian state."
Beside the point - Palestinians living in Irsrael have every right to do so without the threat of being evicted to another State
Nessie the Yahoo has consistently opposed a Palestinian State and has refused to negotiate the setting up of one, just as they have confiscated Palestinian relief money because of the threat to bring them to the International court to face last years war crimes.
He went to the elections on the promise that there would be no Palestinian State (even though he has now backpeddled from that promise.
Would you buy a used car from this spiv, I ask myself!!
"Unfortunately they have rejected every offer made to them since 1938."
If you want to go back to 1938, The first acts by the newly established Israeli state was to forcibly clear Muslim homes, in some cases, by throwing grenades into occupied homes - the shape of things to come.

"Jerusalem evictions"

The properties in question are either owned by Jews or belonged to them prior to 1948 when Jerusalem was illegally occupied and ethnically cleansed by Jordan.

This CARTOON aptly illustrates the situation.
