Subject: Obit: Well, not yet but - Don Thompson
From: Richard Bridge
Date: 16 Apr 15 - 03:24 PM

I am told that Don Thompson is seriously ill. Apparently he was taken into hospital last week with intestinal problems. It is said that he is not conscious at the moment and the hospital are considering a move to a Hospice. One must sympathise with his wife Winnie.

Further info is that it is rather worse than the above reveals.

Oh 'eck, as they say around here. Only met Don once, at Moira, but he is a nice bloke. Hope the rumours of his demise are exaggerated.

I refrained from putting too much detail on Facebook in deference to Winnie Thompson but, as Richard says, Don has been diagnosed as terminal. That was the news that Winnie broke earlier today, and that he was to be moved to a Hospice. So no obit yet, but it doesn't look good.

I've spoken at some length to the Wild Rover (or Clever Evil) - new-ish catters may not remember the man behind the names - and John is still underplaying it. Bear in mind that Don was 74 and had been suffering from emphysema for a considerable time, probably as a result of his previous long-term history of smoking, which is a hint.

Winnie is herself only recently out of hospital, but it looks very possible for family to take up the slack - and in addition to help with Winnie's mother who lives nearby. And who must be getting on for telegram from the Queen time.

The thread title has been changed to reflect Mr. Thompson's grave illness. It can revert back at some time in the future. ---mudelf

Don is a wonderful fellow. I have a CD he did and I really enjoy it. I hope a miracle happens, but if it doesn't, and anyone is speaking with him in person, please give him my warmest regards.

Richard, "obit" means someone has died. Has that happened?

Oh, bugger. Always enjoyed Don's playing and singing at the Seven Stars, at Orpington FC and other odd placed I'd encounter him in Kent.

Nice bloke to chat to, too, though disagreed with him on quite a few things!

This is very sad news. He and Winnie both were laudable contributors to the sing around session scene. Each had a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat as their respective performances unfolded.

Together with others, ( Richard, Jacqui, John B etc ) I was encouraged with my limited talent and welcomed to the local folk scene, some 20 years ago. I will always be grateful to Don and his like. A true gentleman. One can only hope against hope that he recovers

I just saw on Facebook that the family announced that Don has died. Maybe a Mudelf can return the obit to the thread name. Such a sad loss, the family must be pretty devastated that he went so quickly.

My thoughts are with the family today. Although we met fairly sporadically, we "spoke" over PMs and also played music together. I have put Don's name on the "In Memoriam" thread. Another smashing bloke.

RIP

Very sad to lose one of our best friends. Thankfully the end came peacefully and without too much pain I hope. Myself and Mumblin' Len( a rare Mudcatter) have Winnie in our thoughts at this trying time. Thankfully, she will have lots of help and support from family and friends. With fond memories of those Seven Stars days, and Don's support for Orpington Friday Folk. T D L.
