There are a number of fiddling styles on Prince Edward Island, with Acadian (i.e., Maritime French-Canadian) and Scottish (like Cape Breton) predominant. This new site, under the auspices of the University of PEI, features about 120 Island fiddlers in video & sound recordings, interviews and write-ups, as well as short essays on just about everything related to the pertinent fiddling tradition(s). Compiled and presented by Ken Perlman, based on his field research in the 1990s and 2000s: Bowing Down Home.

Warning to fiddleophiles: once you go in, you may never come out ... !

I was honored to work for Ken on that project. Great music, great people.

Well worth many visits. Thanks for posting, meself. I'd been waiting for the official opening and got busy here.

meself, how can I listen to the tunes? I have found the 30 second bits but don't know how to access complete pieces. Help much appreciated.

There are a few different ways to access the music:

1) Place cursor on 'Tunes' - list should appear. Slide cursor to title of tune and click. Wait a second. Page will pop up, with title at top. Scroll down to 'Tune Selections' - click on name of fiddler/tune on left; tune will play. Or click on 'info' on right. Another page will come up; click on arrow.

2) Click on 'VIEW REPOSITORY' at top. Then click on 'Bowing Down Home Music Collection'. Titles with icons will appear; click on one.

3) Put cursor over 'People'. List of names will appear. Click on one; you'll get a write-up, and scroll down for recordings.

Good luck and good listening!

To get the videos, follow #2 above, but click on 'Bowing Down Home Video Snippets'. (Most are 'full length' rather than bona fide 'snippets').

Hey, Bruce - I'm doing pretty good for an old fella. Not exactly living the life of Reilly, but maybe the life of his lazy, penniless older brother. How's yourself?

Nice site, thanks for the heads up.

Sad to see that Eddy Arsenault died last year. I had the pleasure of meeting him and attempting to squawk a fiddle tune for him at his house (being a mando player myself). From memory I played Waiting for the Federals/Seneca being the best I could come up with at the time.

Nick

What a great site. For a guy just starting to explore Canadian traditional music this is a godsend. Thanks.
