It seems that nobody can create a thread that doesn't directly relate to the finer points of music, without being attacked for not using the BS prefix. Many a thread that should have, or would have, died an early death has been extended to ridiculous lengths with people arguing "fer or agin" BS (yes, I'm guilty of this too). I would like to suggest some options:

1. Get over it. While much of the BS doesn't interest me either, not everybody shares the same interests. People will talk about unrelated topics no matter where they are.

2. I would like to offer up this thread as a forum for all future arguments about BS, so that I can read through other threads without having to read the same shit over again.

3. In this day and age, it's pretty easy to start up your own website, complete with message board or mailing list. Once you have your own website, you may dictate what is discussed.

Paul

PS: To quote another esteemed Mudcatter (there I go assuming my own esteem), "You're all a bunch of whiney titty-babies".

Here's my opinion, stated once before, I believe, &, hopefully, here for the last time--Being, perhaps, somewhat immodest, I don't think of the things I say as BS, but they are, sometimes, not directly related to musical topics. If I were to prefix, I'd prefer NM (non-musical) to BS. I have no problem picking & choosing among the threads & I find various ones of interest.

Good idea Paul, a to BS or not to BS thread, a bitch session on bullshit. I like your point about getting tired of reading through the argument over and over again. It is getting monotonous and its creating more bad will than solving anything. The BS may not drive people away but the persistent arguments over it will.

I posted the message below earlier today on the 'Pills to Purge Melancholy' thread; however, I think it is more appropriately posted here. Forgive me for my redundancy, I just happen to love James Joyce.

And Paul, you can assume your own esteem with me anytime!

-------------------------------------

This Thanksgiving holiday, I picked up my dog-eared copy of 'The Dubliners' by James Joyce and flipped to one of my favorite stories therein, 'The Dead'. I was amazed to find how relevant several bits of this story were to the things that have been discussed on this forum before and especially to the turn that this thread has taken. Below is a particularly relevant part which I hope you all will digest (along with all that leftover turkey). And to those who are not familiar with Joyce, this was originally published in 1916, which makes me consider the old addage, 'The more things change, the more they stay the same':

'A new generation is growing up in our midst, a generation actuated by new ideas and new principles. It is serious and enthusiastic for these new ideas and its enthusiasm, even when it is misdirected, is, I believe, in the main sincere. But we are living in a sceptical and, if I may use the phrase, a thought-tormented age: and sometimes I fear that this new generation, educated or hypereducated as it is, will lack those qualities of humanity, of hospitality, of kindly humour which belonged to an older day. Listening tonight to the names of all those great singers of the past it seemed to me, I must confess, that we were living in a less spacious age. Those days might, without exaggeration, be called spacious days: and if they are gone beyond recall let us hope, at least, that in gatherings such as this we shall still speak of them with pride and affection, still cherish in our hearts the memory of those dead and gone great ones whose fame the world will not willingly let die.' . . .

'But yet,' . . . 'there are always in gatherings such as this sadder thoughts that will recur to our minds: thoughts of the past, of youth, of changes, of absent faces that we miss here tonight. Our path through life is strewn with many such sad memories: and were we to brood upon them always we could not find the heart to go on bravely with our work among the living. We have all of us living duties and living affections which claim, and rightly claim, our strenuous endeavours.

'Therefore, I will not linger on the past. I will not let any gloomy moralising intrude upon us here tonight. Here we are gathered together for a brief moment from the bustle and rush of our everyday routine. We are met here as friends, in the spirit of good-fellowship, as colleagues, also to a certain extent, in the true spirit of camaraderie . . . .'

OK, I'll start:
Aine (and I make no apology for my lack of keyboarding knowledge to accent your name correctly), you are the whiniest, tittiest baby of them all.

Liam, perhaps I wasn't specific enough in my original posting. Since nothing is fun unless someone is excluded, I had no intention of reading through whatever useless tripe you chose to type. So shut your hole.

... and Sophie and Bill, your opinions are as poorly expressed as they are uninformed. Piss off!

My current server won't host a forum like this used to be (folk songs and music, with some discussion of instruments and techniques), so I'm currently searching for one that will, and has the capability of blocking messages from addresses on a proscribed list of e-mail addresses. It will be simple to make the proscribed list, and hard to get off of it. [And it will be made available on the Forum] Postings will be noted by return e-mail addresses as well any chosen moniker, ensuring as best as possible (without elaborate measures for pre-certification) some responsibility for statements made.

Just to raise this out of the swamp, it is worth pointing out that Gabriel Conroy in the story of "The Dead" is being undercut by his own deadness, which is revealed in this cliche-ridden speech, and which he takes a kind of awkward pride in. The reason why the story is so heartrending at the end is that the real connections to the past (his wife's love for another man, dead for love of her), and what it means to be part of the past, are unknown to him; and when he does discover the true meaning of what it would mean to know the past, he sees himself to be a failure as a human being.

Oh, goody. Let's all start our own forums that we can exclude everyone else from. Then we can sit and send messages to ourselves all day and night.

BSer, if yer gonna insist on email addresses on your forum, ya might pay yer dues by posting yours here. Mine is bseedkratz@aol.com, but you could have found that out by checking Mudcat resources: it's listed there, as are those of most of the regular posters to these threads. Is yours?

Mandatory music content:

I'm gonna sit right down and write my self a letter
And make believe it came from you.
I'm gonna write words oh-so-sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet,
With lots of kisses on the bottom,
I'll be glad I got 'em.
I'm gonna write and say I hope you're feeling better
And close with "Love" the way you do.
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you.

Bill D ...hmmm yup you are correct - others may not understand why but I certainly do. Reading the quote from Joyce reminded of all that is bad in the exclusive publishing world. Joyce could have written a very very very long 'run on' sentence if he wanted to and we the consumer could not do anyting about that, here however we can do something about such silliness. Complain!

Now where is that spaw??? Joyce is tiresome to read, I used try to but quit! If he has something to say it goes on and on and on and on ... Bullshit is bullshit!

The internet is providing another door for the literate. I used to wander into a bookshop and browse, now the interenet has more variety; not only can we read 'authors' on line but have the chance to contribute as well. This revolution benifits muddie, we don't have to read any particular author, we can choose 'Spaw' or 'Bseed' or whoever.

In fact it is now possibile for a person to gain popularity on the basis of his/her posts where ever they may be. I notice some folk on muddie contribute lots of stuff, others less and we all have our favorites :0)

The internet is providing a whole new world for serious and creative bullshit. The rules have changed too for the sucessfull writer, it is not enough just to be in print you have to be 'online' as well. There are some writers who have gained fame and never worked a day for a publisher, Matt Drudge now has his own Radio Show! So being online is some of, though not all that is needed to become a 'writer'. Talent helps too.

In printed media long paragraphs and complciated sentences used be popular but on the net the opposite is the case. The shorter the paragrah/sentence the better since the aim is to convey information not impress. Perhaps in the day of the 'Book' fancy language created the impression of intelect, here it simply looks arrogant.

Bullshit needs to be accurate and easy on the eye, I don't care if Okiemockingbird is a Ph D phd BA MA MD, what he/she writes is real hard to read and boring to boot! I think Spaw called it 'philobabble', very apt! Good Bullshit is plain talkin.

Its so beneath me....but then not much else is except my watch which I dropped while evacuating my bladder and timing my every move (flip,grabtab,zip,reach,dig,etc........) and trying to fit in time to read BS from real BS artists. It is getting hard to find any BS of quality that is BS for BS and only BS including the BS on this BS designated BS thread and ..........HEY look at all the BS in the last sentence!!!! name in the snow? y'all must be yankees!

It reminds me of a story I recently heard. It seems our president stepped out onto the porch of the white house and found that someone had written "Clinton's a jerk!" in urine in the fresh snow. Incensed, he returned to the Oval office and got the FBI on the phone - demanding an investigation. Several days later the FBI had "bad news, and worse news" to report to the president. "Well just let me have it," said Mr Clinton. "The bad news, Mr President is that our analysts have proven the urine to be that of Vice President Gore." The president was beside himself with anger and disappointment at his friend's betrayal. "What news could be worse than that?" he asked the FBI -

"Well sir," the agent answered, "the handwriting was Mrs Clinton's."

I'm trying to post a response here but I keep cracking up.

Liam, I loved the joke.

Shortly after the revolution two Soviet generals were walking through the snow in Siberia. One was a former aristocrat, the other a peasant. As they walked, the peasant kept exclaiming about how wonderful the revolution was, and particularly about the miracle that he and one of his former oppressors could walk together as equals. The former aristocrat nodded occasionally but said nothing. Finally, after a couple of hours of the peasant's extolling the glories of the revolution, they stopped to take a pee.

"Comrade," the former peasant said. "I never cease to be amazed by the wonderful blessings brought on by the glorious revolution: here we are after walking side by side, talking as equals, a former aristocrat and a former peasant, here we are standing side by side, pissing in the snow. Isn't the revolution wonderful...but comrade, your piss isn't making a yellow hole in the snow as mine is...why is that?"

At last the former aristocrat spoke: "Dot's because I'm pissink on your boot, peasant."

Subject: Lyr Add: HAVE SOME MADEIRA, M'DEAR ( Limeliters)
From: bseed(charleskratz)
Date: 30 Nov 99 - 02:00 AM

La-gah-dee-um, La-gah-dee-um, La-gah-dee-um, La-gah-dee-um,

Scoobie-doobie, Oogalya-doobie, Shoobie-dra-ha-ha,

She was young, she was pure, she was new, she was nice,
She was fair, she was sweet seventeen.
He was old, he was vile--and no stranger to vice,
He was bad, he was base, he was mean.
He had slyly inveigled her up to his flat
To view his collection of stamps (all unperforated),
And he smiled as he hastened to put out the cat,
The wine, his cigar, and the lamps,

"Have some madeira, m'dear. You really have nothing to fear.
I'm not trying to tempt you, that wouldn't be right,
You shouldn't drink spirits at this time of night.
Have some madeira, m'dear. It's really much nicer than beer.
I don't care for sherry, and one cannot drink stout,
And port is a wine I can well do without...
It's simply a case of chaque-un a sonGOUT[rhymes with out] (heh, heh, heh)
Have some madeira, m'dear."

Unaware of the wiles of the snake-in-the-grass
And the fate of the maiden who topes,
She lowered her standards by raising her glass,
Her courage, her eyes--and his hopes.
She sipped it, she drank it, she drained it, she did!
He promptly refilled it again,
And he smiled as he secretly carved one more notch
On the butt of his gold-handled cane:

"Have some madeira, m'dear,
I have a small cask of it here.
And once it's been opened, well, you know it won't keep.
Do finish it off; it will help you to sleep (heh, heh, heh).
Have some madeira, m'dear.
It's really an excellent year.
Now if it were gin, you'd be wrong to say yes;
The evil gin does would be hard to assess..
And besides it is inclined to affect me prowess,
Have some madeira, m'dear."

Then there flashed through her mind what her mother had said
With her ante-penultimate breath,
"Oh my child, should you gaze on the wine when 'tis red
Be prepared for a fate worse than death!"
She let go her glass with a shy little cry,
Crash! Tinkle! it fell to the floor;
When he asked, "What in Heaven?" She made no reply,
Up her mind, and a dash for the door.

"Have some madeira, m'dear,"
Rang out down the hall loud and clear,
With a tremulous voice that was filled with despair,
As she fought to take breath in the cool midnight air,
"Have some madeira, m'dear!"
The words seemed to ring in her ear.
Until the next morning, she woke up in bed
With a smile on her lips and an ache in her head...
And a beard on her earlobe that tickled and said:
"Have some madeira, m'dear?"

Of course you can borrow the car...

Uncle Charles,
I showed Mom the lyrics to that song of yours. I'm not sure if she liked it or not, she seemed awfully quiet.
Guess what? Dads buying me a new car. I'm so excited!
Thanks for the offer though, you're always so good to me.
Luv Little Bonnie

Neo, Lou Gottlieb of The Limelighters introduced "Have Some Madiera, M'dear" as "a song of seduction--which none-the-less has the seal of approval of forces for good in the community." Gottlieb was a very funny guy. I couldn't resist posting it, both because it is a hell of a funny song and as an avuncular warning not to assume innocent intentions of avuncular--or other--types on the internet (or elsewhere). And, of course, to demonstrate to the purists that even BS threads are, often as not, music threads.

It's always a delight to hear from you, bonnie Bonnie. I hope I didn't give your parents too much of a scare.

Once again I am offended by this thread creep which has turned a basically fine BS thread into music. I simply cannot, as I said before, spend all my valuable time on such things as opening threads to see what is in them.

But since I have........

Seed, do you remember, or did you ever hear Tony Randall doing that song. YOUR old age is obviously rubbing off on me and I can't recall for the life of me where or in what context. What I DO remember was the wonderfully funny way he did it. Very gothic and sinister with that great aristocratic sounding voice. It was just great...but WHERE was it?

Curse you Seed!!!!!!!

sApw...no, that's SWpA, er,uh....Spaw..yeah, that's it.

Penny, you are, of course, right. They wrote it. The Limelighters had a memorable recording of it (they also sang it when I saw them at the hungry i back in ought '62).

Spaw, no, I don't remember seeing that. It must have been great--I can imagine his intonations, his facial expressions. Was it on the original Smothers Brothers show?

Hew, what's all the noise about? I use to play the BS (Bassoon) in high school. Thanks for starting a thread about Bassoons.

Can't you people stick the subject? Am the only one with Bassoon experience?

Lets get serious.

*true story*...when I was in high school, they tried to get me to switch from clarinet to bassoon, but I was too smart for 'em....those bassoon reeds are flimsy, expensive, and tricky!

I think Sandy meant to add Pissing in the Snow, but there are raunchy rhymes and tales in Randolph/Legman Blow the Candle Out also.
