Subject: Licensing Mingulay Boat Song From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Apr 15 - 03:34 AM We want to include "Mingulay Boat Song" in the upcoming Rise Again songbook, but our publisher, Hal Leonard, won't let us include it unless we have a print license for it. We know that the song was written by Sir Hugh S. Roberton, director of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. I bought a used copy of the Australian edition of Roberton's 1950 book, Songs of the Isles, which includes "Mingulay Boat Song." The book was published in Australia by Allans Music, and in the UK by J. Curwen & Sons, Ltd., London. My Australian book says that the song is Copyright USA 1938 by Hugh S. Roberton. Roberton died in 1952. Roberton, Glasgow" on March 18, 1938. It was renewed by his son, Kenneth Bantock Roberton, on May 6, 1965. So Roberton's heirs would be the people to consult. It appears that Kenneth Bantow Roberton is deceased (1914-2003), and his papers are held by the University of Glasgow. http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/manuSCRIPTs/search/results_n.cfm?NID=5079&RID=&Y1=&Y2=&M=001 According to the following article, publishers for both father and son appear to be Pergamon Press Ltd. and J, Curwen and Sons, Ltd http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/roberton_hugh_stevenson.htm So, where do we go to get a license to print this song? -Joe- |
