What we want is yanks v. Brits. All we need is for the yanks to slaughter the Germans tonight and the Lionesses to whack the Japanese tomorrow. What a final that would produce! Pity the soddin' matches don't kick off until midnight UK time. I might just gird my loins and stay up tomorrow, to see our girls, but I can't do two late nights in a row at my age. Bloody silly Canuck time zone!

Shit. I find myself watching the bloody match even though I'm knackered out of me brain. Yanks just missed a golden chance. Sounds like there's a good yank contingent in the crowd. I haven't seen great open football like this since I watched Bury at Gigg Lane, just up from my house, in the early sixties.

Thank goodness for the second goal! The first was an obvious fuckup by the ref. Hey, I was watching from a slo-mo camera feed in Moncton, NB.ca and the ref doesn't have that luxury. So, the second goal sealed it, even if the first may have been hard on the spirits of The Germans. Overall, I thought the Yanks out-defended the Germans.

Tomorrow will be a nail biter... I hope. But, I have every confidence in England.

Finally, a confident, consistently well-played game from the US, who have been looking off their form for most of the tournament. A well-deserved win.

The refereeing, though, has been and continues to be spotty throughout. Too many wrong calls.

The German penalty came from a mild foul but it was a goal-scoring opportunity clearly denied and should have been a sending-off. Gawd knows what Sasic was doing missing that penalty. That was the decisive couple of minutes in this game. The US penalty didn't look like one to me as the foul was outside the box. But the yanks definitely edged it overall. I shouldn't have stayed up as I'm brain-dead this morning. I'll be scrubbed and ready to dive into bed as soon as the final whistle goes tonight. Extra time will zombify me. Bloody Canuckistan time zones. Go, Lionesses! Adelante! Excelsior!

'roar'? mind your language, men. this is the beautiful game played beautifully we are talking about here - doesn't need these macho style of comments. i have never liked international football as much as the real thing (partick thistle, west ham) - don't know if it's the inevitable disappointment of scotland and england or the bellicose jingoism that so often accompanies it. hope that doesn't get into the women's game as it gains popularity. recent years watching spain or germany have been exceptions to the usually dull international scene and a treat for neutrals. i'm looking forward to seeing japan - hope they win it. we all have our reasons -usually random and irrational - for supporting teams this, i reckon, is one of the charms of football

Nah, I think Guest is right, Steve. It's about time we removed all this gamesmanship from sport. I don't think they have gone far enough though. We should probably not have winners or losers either. After all, we need to think of the psychological damage done! Probably best that we remove the goals. Maybe the ball as well. Make sure everyone is happy and comes away with a positive attitude. :-)

I'll be hoping Wambach gets a goal in the final... at 37, she's not got many chances left to set her scoring record in stone (if that's possible). The Yanks have an old team, although England is not that much younger. I'll be keeping an eye on the weather.

This eve in Edmonton, mainly sunny and 24C + 57%RH = 28H with 10kph wind. Nice weather for a game.

I once watched a game of American football on telly. My interpretation of what I saw was thus: two bunches of ludicrously padded men stand around for five minutes. Suddenly, one man throws an oval ball along a line formed by these men. The two groups of men then set about beating each other up for several minutes. After this, the two bunches of men resume their standing around. In the meantime, groups of very attractive young women on the touchline, wearing frilly skirts right up to their delectable bottoms, jump insanely up and down whilst making quite a lot of noise. It's truly a wonderful spectacle.

As I understand it England are the underdogs in the semi and if they got through would be even more the underdogs in the final as the USA are currently ranked second in the world and they and Germany are the two most succesfull sides in said World Cup history. However the game is about scoring and in the Quarter Final the English girls were being outplayed initially but showed they are deadly in front of goal. Scored with their first two chances. That is what it is all about! I think they may well do well tonight - though I am recording it and getting up early!

As to last night's game the US deserved to win in the end but did ride their luck initially. US defender should have been sent off. German was through on goal when she was awarded a penalty because of a foul. If it is a foul when someone is through on goal then it is an automatic red card - or at least should be! That was an awful blunder by ref. US penalty wasn't a penalty as initial contact was outside of the box - though to be fair to the ref it was very close. So just one of those things with second decision but first decision was awful. Saying that Germany still got a penalty and it was they who failed to score. The Americans took their chances and in the end were quite convincing.

I'm with Steve on American Football. Just don't get it! Though don't swear at me as I don't get cricket either!!

Right after the tsunami the Japanese women's team played with a survival instinct I had never seen before. The US may not get past them no matter how hard fought the game will be.

Now, as for the game just passed? I am gutted. Not because of the own goal but because of the constant "give away" of possession. Where in FFFF is the logic in kicking the ball into touch by the keeper near midfield or simply clearing it down field? I just don't get the idea of "not controlling the puck". Perhaps I am too Canuck? Just seems to me that the guy with the puck gets to shoot it.

I just don't get it Steve. People walking about not doing very much then it rains and it is a draw!! I imagine that will sound as absurd to some English people as us saying we just don't get American Football will sound to some Americans.

There is actually a cricket club here in Kelso though to tell you the truth the members seems to be (and ok this is a wild sweeping statement but there is a smidging of truth in it) either English incomers, sons of English incomers or sons of doctors! Cricket just isn't that prominent in Scotland so I've just never got to grips with it.

England really unlucky last night. Beaten by freak goal in the dying seconds. They were the better team in the second half especially but again just didn't take one of the bunch of chances they had.

Guest doesn't have much idea in trying to make it into a US v EU thing. Do you think people all over England were shouting "come on Germany - our EU buddies"? The idea is absurd.

In a footballing sense (well certainly in the men's game) the Germans are despised by England fans and by the English media. However in the public mind the traditional rivalries haven't been built up in the women's game yet. I mean I was wanting England to win last night and I'm one of those Scottish folk who don't mind who beats the England men's team - as long as they do get beaten! So I'd imagine most English and British people watching the USA v Germany game wouldn't care that much who won. Some would perhaps shout for one side or the other - most would be pretty neutral.

I thought the game was an insipid affair. Extra time might have set it alight. The own goal was desperately unlucky. Very disappointed is what I am.

It's too bloody nippy for cricket in Scotland. And aha, what we call a draw in every other sport is called a tie in cricket, a rare occurrence indeed. In cricket, a draw does not imply equality. It just means nobody actually won as such.   Simple!

I'll get to cheer for England and USA this weekend. Not too bad at all. I see the games are at 14:00 and 16:00, Alberta and BC times respectively, as they have been for the most part. The first game played in Moncton, New Brunswick (where I live) was a nightmare... not enough buses to service the designated off site parking and the three entrances don't face the street (Fing architects!). MANY people only got seated an hour after the game started. The second game went off without a hitch but screw-ups with the first game sure made our city look bad. The major TV network covering the matches wasn't present so that was one saving grace. It was on our local cable channel and there was piss poor camera work. Hopefully that will also improve in future.

Japan were looking great early in the tournament, playing the classic Brazil-in-the 80s possession style that to me constitutes "the beautiful game", but that was against lesser opponents. England were pretty successful at disrupting that, and could well have won the match.

The own goal was desperately unlucky, but what stands out the most, again, is the sloppy officiating, with another penalty called for an offense that occurred outside the box. I do hope such will not happen in the final.

Well we did it. Unfortunately I couldn't watch it as I was helping out at the local kiddies' (mainly) dance show. Mrs Steve was in the Ladies Of A Certain Age ensemble, adding spice to the mix, tapping and/or salsa-ing to Killer Queen, Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, Hit The Road Jack and Doop Doop, and I was filming it all. God they were damn good, though...no, I'm sayin' nuthin'... Damn. Nothing good ever happens when I have free time. I'll have to watch the highlights of the footie. Those Lionesses are going to change the whole way we see the beautiful game from now on, and good for them, say I.

After two weeks of wall-to-wall sunshine and cloudless blue skies in AB and BC, with temps constantly 30-plus (38 a couple of days) we drove down from Tofino to Victoria yesterday (Sunday) under a yellowy clouded sky, with the smell of wood-smoke in the air. Forest fires maybe? We saw nothing, but there was a definite smell.

This morning in Victoria, still grey skies as I look out from our hotel at Laurel Point.

Thought maybe so. We've been over in AB and BC for the past two weeks and we make a point of trying to avoid TV when we're on holiday. All we've seen has been a bit of the women's footy and about ten minutes of baseball (ten minutes that felt more like ten hours of nothing happening! 😎).

Thanks Rap. Mrs. Backwoodsman just checked and found that there's a substantial fire on Dog Mountain, Sproat Lake, on the road from Tofino - that's where we noticed the smell and yellow clouds were strongest. Something of a shock for people who live in the UK, where we don't have the huge forests, and wildfires are infrequent.

Lots of cabins by the lake, hope they all survive the fire.

Weather Forecast for Victoria BC today shows 'Smoke'.

I've started watching soccer over the last ten years or so and viewing has been limited so I make no claim to being an astute critic of the game. But I did get to watch several of the top ranked teams during the FIFA World Championship. My feeling was that the USA team was exceptional and a joy to watch. I feel a bit of national pride in their accomplishment.
