I was there, the weather was good, and the music was good the perfomers included recognised competent performers such as Derek Gifford, monkeys fist, Baggywrinkle, Chris Parkinson.

i have worked consistently at many major festivals over the years ,as well as Clubs
this year I am playing only a few ,that is my choice I am 64 years old and wish to spend more time at home in ireland, however I am playing at Saltburn and Tenterden, Two festivals that I have enjoyed over the years and which I find good craic and which I have been consistently rebooked, these are facts not anonymous opinion. I made a light hearted remark to ex festival organiser Malcolm Storey, who was one of two organisers of whitby who booked me consistently over many years.
lets now take the remark seriously , why should they book me? well... it is a celebration of 50 years of the festival, I have been booked there many times, and most people are of the opinion I can still play concertina banjo guitar and sing TO A GOOD STANDARD, there are also reasons why they might not wish to book me [overall balance to the festival, too many performers already, too many male performers ,budget etc all of them perfectly acceptable to me.
I have just come back from Whitby Sea fest where my music on all instruments was well received, in fact there was a radio presenter there who wished to use one of my self penned songs accompanied on guitar for his programme.
I enjoyed the festival, and it seemed like people enjoyed my performances.
if an organiser wishes to book me on certain conditions[ for example Cork Singers Club, who have a rule that it is unaccompanied singing only, I will accomodate.
There are banjo clips from some five years ago AND OVER[ hardly recent] which I keep up there for my own benefit to monitor my improvement from when I began,no one has ever said they will not book me because of these, and might I point out I am in demand to play here in Ireland as well as the UK, but I limit my work in the UK for many reasons one being lack of desire to be continually travelling, I have done too much in the past.
If organisers wish to hear me I direct them to my website www.dickmiles.com where there are professional recordings available, and which are an accurate indication of my live performances.

Dick; for the sake of accuracy I can only recall booking you twice in the 25 years I was involved.

If you can prove this not so then so be it.

There was no particular reason for this other than if I was bringing someone over from Ireland then I would prefer someone Irish. There were lots of those that I would have loved to have had at Whitby but never got around to.

Incidentally Jim Bainbridge suffered in the same way.

When did you take the festival on, Malcolm? 1981 I reckon I have been booked there since 1977, 6 Times.
It is of course every organisers right to decide on their own booking policy.
My policy at my festival is to book people on merit, so for example if I wanted to book Peggy Seeger, I would book her regardless of the fact that she was an American living in England, but as I said every organiser has a right to have their own policy, you managed to run Whitby successfully for 25 years, that was some achievement, I take my hat off to you, you did a good job and clearly have been a hard act to follow.

I have checked my records and you are not on the list for 1982 - the year in the 90s was 1996. So overall you have done 6 of the 50 festivals if your other dates are correct.

My artiste selection formula would be hard to explain. Probably slightly more difficult than the Duckworth - Lewis system - although I had a pal called Phil Duckworth in my teens and early twenties. He didn't sing or play any sport - that was another pal called Colin Page and we once came second in a talent competition singing an Everly Brothers number! Heady days.

its a trifle peculiar but I have played most of the folk clubs and festivals in the north east, in fact over the last 50 years i was the most booked artist at one north eastern folk club[ stockton sun], and have never met or come acro the so called "richie" the anonymous cowardly poster, that was so kind to grudgingly admit that he did not mind my voice or concertina.
until this person gives his proper full name, contact adress, and put up videos showing his own expertise, i am inclined to think he is someone else who does not have the balls to introduce himself and tell us what folk clubs he attends, just another anonymous internet cowardly shit.

I am the only person who has put up you tube clips to illustrate that my recent and present playing was competent not incompetent, this was in answer to a personal attack on my music, there were also a number of earlier anonymous comments about payment and attendance, which do not show anonymous posters or Mudcat at its best.
this thread was started as an attempt to promote a folk music event in the uk, other people have come in and made anonymous statements which they have not been prepared to back up, neither have any of those people had the guts to say who they REALLY are.
Any coward can come on here and say they are guest SO AND SO., AND then be negative about a festival or negative about something else, perhaps they should try organising events themselves.
This is not opinion but a factual account of what has happened on this thread .

Furthermore the month of august is one of the best months for me to be in Ireland, I can, if i want be getting paid for playing music most nights of the week. I do not need to come over to play at festivals in the uk, IN AUGUST, in fact often it means I am turning down gigs in Ireland, my remark made to Malcolm was a joke, hence the joking phrase "a bunch of old whippersnappers"
I come over and play at Saltburn IN AUGUST out of choice., because I like Saltburn and I like John Taylor, way back in 1978 he was someone who gave me some of my first gigs in the north east.

Just dropped on this hugh rant. Surely as a festival director it is their choice who they book. Imagine if every miffed failure to get booked was to go off on a tangent and demand statics and explanations why they were not booked. Arrange your own festival, take on the responsibility and time that it takes and book yourself. Problem solved

obviously as a organiser I am aware that festival directors have to provide a balanced programme and that many good artists cannot be fitted in.
