There will be no Shanty, Forebitter and Foc's'l Ballad Session at The Press Room -- or anywhere else -- this Saturday, July 18, 2015.

This cancellation should be for July ONLY.

The Fire Marshall has decreed that there is to be no live music -- and that includes the folk sessions, the jazz sessions, the hoot, as well as all the scheduled stage shows -- until a new sprinkler system is installed, which should take two weeks. Work is supposed to start tomorrow.

The Friday trad session has been temporarily moved to Red & Shorty's in Dover (with a starting time of 6:30 instead of 4:30). Friday's session was a lovely singing session. Unfortunately they have a concert scheduled for next Saturday. And the two other venues I've approached are unable to host the sea music sing for various reasons.

I'm posting it here, on my Facebook feed, on the Facebook group "Pressroom Gang and Clan", emailing the information to a large number of people, and calling a list of people who don't have access to a computer.

The Press Room IS open for food and drink.

See Portsmouth Herald article of yesterday here -- No Live Music

See you all in August!

Linn

Tami - have a bit of fun with the Redfern Shanty Club

The Dock is a small bar in inner Sydney, home to a fantastic shanty session on Monday nights where 45 mainly under 30's cram into a small shop converted to a bar & sing for 2 hours. A couple of members of the Roaring Forties & a few other oldies attend & a great time is had.

here they are live
Redfern Shanty Club on Reverbnation The videos do not do them (us!) justice.

What I love about the session is the young voices, mainly male roaring away with fantastic harmonies & the place packed with singers almost elbow to elbow. I wasn't there on the nights before they remembered the fire regulations when 75 singers crammed into a bar licenced for 45. The leader introduce the shanty (& shanty is a very loose definition) by singing the chorus line by line with the singers following. A few repeats of the chorus & off we go!

A lot of the singers are still at University, several are comedians &/or actors with good voice projection & a number of them are songwriters, they are an amazing group of people & I love being there. I'd love to introduce several of their songs to the shanty community.

sandra (off to Shanty night)

Thank you, Sandra, but it's just not the same as being at a sing.

Those of you who usually or occasionally come to the session, please let me know here if you've read this or if my missives have gotten to you or if you've heard of the cancellation through other sources.

Thanks!

Thanks, Maeve, for your support.

Cancellation is for the July session ONLY. Hope the sprinkler system will get installed SOON (hadn't been started as of yesterday -- which contributes to my stress level).

The Friday trad session is meeting at Red & Shorty's in Dover from 6:30 to 9 or later. Bring your own drinkables and snacks.

Yes, I'm glad the sessions will pick up again once the fire dept. is happy.

It's a very good thing you do keeping the music going, Linn.

Just found out a little earlier today (Thursday) that the sprinkler work has been started at The Press Room.

It may be that we'll be back there before the estimated two weeks it will take for completion. Depends on how reassured the Fire Marshal is that the work will, indeed, be completed. Or we may not be until the job is completed and inspected that live music is allowed.

Anyway, I've just heaved a deep sigh of relief at the positive news.

I thought this was the first Press Room sea music singaround cancelled in our 13 year history, but I'm working (in my archives and calendars) in 2009 and discovered that the November 2008 session was cancelled. Not sure for what reason.

Just goes to show that while my mental database isn't half bad, it's not totally accurate. Glad I've got documentation!

Linn, I too have reached that stage where the value of the record-keeping habit keeps making itself felt in a strong way. It is a stage where we will do well not only to maintain the good habit but to try adding that little extra detail to every record we make. An example of the extra detail would be the reason, in one or two words, for the Nov 2008 cancellation. Hope they get that sprinkler system in place, and approved, quickly.

Thanks. There's still the mystery of what too-much-stuff was happening on the third Saturday to cause the attempted move to the fourth Saturday, but it was shortly after the election. Dunno.

I hadn't gotten as far as getting the 2008 shanty sings into their appropriate files, via Mudcat posts and my calendars and J-cards. Right now I haven't finished with 2009.

I just pulled my 2008 calendar which has yet to be transcribed and got the answer -- November 15th, which would have been the shanty sing, was the Gordon Bok house concert at Sinsull's.

There wasn't a specific thread for that house concert, but comments are on this thread -- S. Portland House Concerts 2008

The concert was prebooked solid. I remember it as a sensational concert.

No wonder we tried to reschedule the shanty sing on Nov. 22. But there was the jazz 80th birthday concert (Larry Garland's? I don't know) on that date, so November just didn't work out. Too many people had plans for the second Saturday of the month.

Tom, Dave Hallowell, and Bruce MacIntyre had a gig together on the second Saturday of November 2008.

There...do we have all the questions accounted for?

More detective work, this time by just asking people. The gig that Tom,Dave, and Bruce had was a corporate gig at the Cliff House in Ogunquit. They were paid handsomely, but basically ignored all night. And I asked Terry MacDonald of Seacoast Jazz Notes who the late November birthday party was for and found it was for Poppy MacGregor, a loyal Press Room jazz fan. Okay, NOW we've got November 2008 accounted for!

If the live music is up and running at the Press Room by next weekend, will there be an extra chantey sing on Saturday for the Sail Portsmouth weekend?

Is there any word on where the Friday sing will be and whether there will be an "extra" chantey sing on Saturday during Sail Portsmouth?

Subject: RE: CANCELLED_July PressRoom(NH)ShantySing

No, Bill. First of all, there won't be any live music at The Press Room until probably the end of next week, so we hope to return the Friday session there on July 31st.

No "extra" or postponed shanty sing over the weekend with Sail Portsmouth (El Galeón Andalucía and The Lynx). Red & Shorty's offered the space on Saturday, July 25th, but I will be in Brunswick, Maine at a Maine Old Cemeteries Association meeting, then visiting friends at China Sea Trading Company in Gray.

I'll be singing on Sunday down at the Fish Pier for visitors to the ships -- my solo set is right after Three Sheets to the Wind; I'm scheduled for 3:30, I think.

But if you and Gina are around on Friday evening, please come to the Friday Press Room Session In Exile at Red & Shorty's in Dover from 6:30-9:00. Lorna would like us to go later, but I have to be on the road by 6:30 Saturday morning.
