About 10 years ago I was given (by an acquaintance long lost in the mists of time) a copy on tape of an album by an English (I think) female (I'm sure) singer. Though I may have been told at the time who the artiste was, I have forgotten. The album won't set the world alight, but I find it very pleasant to listen to. Can anyone help me identify the singer and/or the album? And tell me anything about her? In order, the songs are:

Chelsea Morning (by Joni Mitchell, but she is not the singer)
Love Has No Pride (? my guess at the title: 1st line is "I've had bad dreams...")
The Working Life (I think someone once told me this was a Bruce Springsteen song)
Falling In Love Again (but without Marlene Dietrich's accent)
Stay Young, Keep Your Wheels In Motion (who else has done this?)
I Only Want To Be With You (a Beatles song)
She Moved Through The Fair (trad)
Northern Lights
In My Life (again, Beatles, I think; might not be the correct title, but 1st line is "There are places I remember)
What Happens Now (? 1st line is "I don't expect my love affairs to last for long")
I Live Not Where I Love (trad)
The Salesman (? from Bridge over Troubled Water, 1st line is "Gee but it's great to be back home")

I know that Bonnie Raitt did a version of Love Has No Pride. The rest of the songs sound within her realm, as well. Sorry, don't know the album.

Or maybe it was from "I Can Remember Everything" as listed above. But either way, sounds like her tracks.

Speaking of which, she did a wonderful, acapella version of "Hard Times" on "Hot Through the Heart."

We love her in this house. She's one of the few pop singers I truly enjoy. Live with Leonard Cohen for a few years. Recorded a nice album called "Famous Blue Raincoat"

Thanks, Gene -- v useful. However, having followed your link, I'm now convinced that my album is not by J Warnes:

a) my singer is playing a guitar, not keyboards

b) I'm fairly sure my singer is English.

Anyone else got any ideas?

The female singer from Fairport Convention was Sandy Denny - amazingly beautiful voice. Maybe she put out an album with these songs on it??

I have some of her albums but none of these songs are on them.

There is fellow here in town working at a local music store that could listen to and probably tell you what the record was. Perhaps where you live there may be an equally talented individual. This fellow is a walking encyclopedia of music. He probably can't add 1+1 but he can tell you about anything musical.

Jennifer Warnes 'famous blue raincoat' is one of my all time favourite CD's...every track a gem ! Stay Young was by Gallagher & Lyle a 70's duo. 'I only want to be with you ' was a 'hit' for Dusty Springfield ..not The Fab Four. and I'll put my tuppence worth in with Jacqui McShee of Pentangle, although I have n't phoned a friend, asked the audience or went 50..50 yet . Yep it's a good poser Bald Eagle. The Big Man.

Sandy Denny was my gut reaction; Helen suggests her as well. There have been various compilations of her stuff put out in the years since her death, some of which contained demos and other previously unreleased material. Good luck.

Bald Eagle, you list "I only want to be with you" as a Beatles song. I feel confident in saying there is no such Beatles song (nor such a line in a Beatles song). It is, however, the title of a chart hit by Dusty Springfield, an English female singer. As I recall, sadly, she died last year. Another of her chart hits that comes to mind is "Wishin' and Hopin'" ("Wishin' and a-hopin'?"). Hope this helps.

There's a lot of Sandy Dennis stuff on the All Music Guide site but most of it lacks track details. I don't know her work well enough to say if it is she, or ,if she ,which recordings, but take a look, something may leap out at you.

Make sure you look for Sandy Denny, rather than Dennis. If memory serves, Sandy Dennis was a 1960's-era actress.

Hi Bald Eagle

I am pleased to say that I can ID the artist. It is Fiona Simpson who in the 70's performed in a duo called Therapy and had an album called "Bringing The House Down". She went on to perform solo around the British folk clubs and released a few albums, mainly doing covers of contemporary songs but also a few trad numbers.

The album you refer to is the only one I can't find at the moment! but I think it was called "This Is Where I Came In" - when I find it I'll let you know for sure. She released at least 2 others titled "Beneath The Rose" and "Still Time". She was great fun, a popular guest with a big personality - a beautiful person with a big, beautiful voice. She was based around the Manchester area.

It might be Barbara Dickson. I have a number of her albums but not the one in question. It sounds like her kind of material, esp the song from "Evita". The period would be about right, before the album version of "Evita" gave her a push into a more MoR repertoire. She's Scots, and that is evident in her singing.

Bald Eagle, it's a pleasure! I've just remembered that the album was called "Then There Was One" as it was her first since the break up of Therapy.
