Subject: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 02 Dec 99 - 04:30 AM About 10 years ago I was given (by an acquaintance long lost in the mists of time) a copy on tape of an album by an English (I think) female (I'm sure) singer. Though I may have been told at the time who the artiste was, I have forgotten. The album won't set the world alight, but I find it very pleasant to listen to. Can anyone help me identify the singer and/or the album? And tell me anything about her? In order, the songs are:
Chelsea Morning (by Joni Mitchell, but she is not the singer) |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: MandolinPaul Date: 02 Dec 99 - 08:01 AM I know that Bonnie Raitt did a version of Love Has No Pride. The rest of the songs sound within her realm, as well. Sorry, don't know the album. Paul |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Wolfgang Date: 02 Dec 99 - 08:18 AM Can't give you the information, sorry, but this may jog someone's memory. From the Jone Mitchell site I copied who covered her song 'Chelsea Morning' from your tracklist.
CHELSEA MORNING Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Folksie Lady Date: 02 Dec 99 - 08:25 AM Could it be Jennifer Warnes on her 1969 album (Parrot) See Me/Touch Me/Feel Me? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Folksie Lady Date: 02 Dec 99 - 08:31 AM Or maybe it was from "I Can Remember Everything" as listed above. But either way, sounds like her tracks. Speaking of which, she did a wonderful, acapella version of "Hard Times" on "Hot Through the Heart." |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 02 Dec 99 - 09:26 AM Many thanks, O wise ones. From Wolfgang's list, it must be Jennifer Warnes; I think I'd recognise Judy Collins' voice. Does anyone know anything about J Warnes? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Dec 99 - 11:43 AM We love her in this house. She's one of the few pop singers I truly enjoy. Live with Leonard Cohen for a few years. Recorded a nice album called "Famous Blue Raincoat" Rick |

Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 02 Dec 99 - 12:11 PM Thanks, Gene -- v useful. However, having followed your link, I'm now convinced that my album is not by J Warnes: a) my singer is playing a guitar, not keyboards b) I'm fairly sure my singer is English. Anyone else got any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: bunkerhill Date: 02 Dec 99 - 04:42 PM Bald Eagle: "She Moves Through the Fair" and "I Live Not Where I Love" are on a Mary Black collection. Might she be yr mystery singer? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Helen Date: 03 Dec 99 - 10:01 PM Bald Eagle, The female singer from Fairport Convention was Sandy Denny - amazingly beautiful voice. Maybe she put out an album with these songs on it?? I have some of her albums but none of these songs are on them. Helen |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Banjer Date: 04 Dec 99 - 05:50 AM There is fellow here in town working at a local music store that could listen to and probably tell you what the record was. Perhaps where you live there may be an equally talented individual. This fellow is a walking encyclopedia of music. He probably can't add 1+1 but he can tell you about anything musical. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ritchie Forster Date: 04 Dec 99 - 08:13 AM Jennifer Warnes 'famous blue raincoat' is one of my all time favourite CD's...every track a gem ! Stay Young was by Gallagher & Lyle a 70's duo. 'I only want to be with you ' was a 'hit' for Dusty Springfield ..not The Fab Four. and I'll put my tuppence worth in with Jacqui McShee of Pentangle, although I have n't phoned a friend, asked the audience or went 50..50 yet . Yep it's a good poser Bald Eagle. The Big Man. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 10 Apr 00 - 08:58 AM I'm still looking: anyone got any more ideas? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Whistle Stop Date: 10 Apr 00 - 09:18 AM Sandy Denny was my gut reaction; Helen suggests her as well. There have been various compilations of her stuff put out in the years since her death, some of which contained demos and other previously unreleased material. Good luck. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Gary T Date: 10 Apr 00 - 09:50 AM Bald Eagle, you list "I only want to be with you" as a Beatles song. I feel confident in saying there is no such Beatles song (nor such a line in a Beatles song). It is, however, the title of a chart hit by Dusty Springfield, an English female singer. As I recall, sadly, she died last year. Another of her chart hits that comes to mind is "Wishin' and Hopin'" ("Wishin' and a-hopin'?"). Hope this helps. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Whistle Stop Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:02 AM Ah, the late, great Dusty Springfield. She was also well-known for the classic "Son of a Preacher Man". A very soulful lady. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:16 AM There's a lot of Sandy Dennis stuff on the All Music Guide site but most of it lacks track details. I don't know her work well enough to say if it is she, or ,if she ,which recordings, but take a look, something may leap out at you. RtS |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Whistle Stop Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:18 AM Make sure you look for Sandy Denny, rather than Dennis. If memory serves, Sandy Dennis was a 1960's-era actress. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:30 AM Gary T: you are absolutely right -- I must have been dreaming, for I know well enough that I only want to be with you is Dusty Springfield, not the Beatles. To other posters: thanks for the replies, but I well know Sandy Denny's voice, and it sure ain't Sandy Denny. Any more offers? Anybody got a line on who else did the Stay young, keep your wheels in motion song? |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Pinetop Slim Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:44 AM Try Mary Black |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 10 Apr 00 - 12:00 PM Doesn't sound like Mary Black, and it's not among the discography at Dara/Dolphin's web-site. But thanks for trying. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Tim Salt Date: 10 Apr 00 - 05:35 PM Hi Bald Eagle I am pleased to say that I can ID the artist. It is Fiona Simpson who in the 70's performed in a duo called Therapy and had an album called "Bringing The House Down". She went on to perform solo around the British folk clubs and released a few albums, mainly doing covers of contemporary songs but also a few trad numbers. The album you refer to is the only one I can't find at the moment! but I think it was called "This Is Where I Came In" - when I find it I'll let you know for sure. She released at least 2 others titled "Beneath The Rose" and "Still Time". She was great fun, a popular guest with a big personality - a beautiful person with a big, beautiful voice. She was based around the Manchester area. Since 1993 she has concentrated on music with a strong Christian message and performing as the Fiona Simson Band she has a web site click here Hope this all helps. Tim |

Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Lanfranc Date: 10 Apr 00 - 07:03 PM It might be Barbara Dickson. I have a number of her albums but not the one in question. It sounds like her kind of material, esp the song from "Evita". The period would be about right, before the album version of "Evita" gave her a push into a more MoR repertoire. She's Scots, and that is evident in her singing. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Ringer Date: 11 Apr 00 - 12:55 PM Tim Salt, I'm greatly indebted. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Can anyone id this album, please? From: Tim Salt Date: 11 Apr 00 - 02:24 PM Bald Eagle, it's a pleasure! I've just remembered that the album was called "Then There Was One" as it was her first since the break up of Therapy. Tim |
