Calling all Mudcatters with links to upbeat, encouraging music and funny-but-not-obscene videos for Mudcat's own Janie. She's managed to fall and badly fracture a femur. She's feeling a bit better than when she first posted about her injury:

***
Subject: RE: Jane's Rainbow: for all needing support & comfort
From: Janie - PM
Date: 17 Sep 15 - 07:18 AM

"Fell on a slick floor at work Monday and have badly shattered my left femur. ,still in fog from surgery severe pain and morphine. Hop e this makes sense. Good thoughts please"
***

Janie tells me, "I would enjoy folks posting music or funny vids..."
So please, let's put together a fun, cherry thread with links to beautiful tunes, well-crafted songs, and funny vids to get Janie back on two strong legs.

Moderators, please feel free to slide this down below in a few days. Since this is a immediate need for good music links for a steadfast music-loving member, I hope it can remain topside for a bit where 'Catters will quickly see it.

Gosh Janie... all that might make it hard to get to sleep at night. You need a good book that is conducive to somnolence.

Here is a link to Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West..... sorry... it IS in German, but here is a *cough.. giggle*'brief' explanation which may adequately soporific by itself.

No need to thank me....

(I'll think about some nice music to add to the nice list above.)

(The Getaway IS wheelchair accessible, but I won't even begin hope for that....)
(Durn... I miss you already...) ♥♥♥

See my post yesterday did not take. All God things posted thus far and continue to cheer me along. Glad last one didn't post cuz it included a grumpy factor about hospital staff not telling me anything. Mostly my fault for not assertively asking.

PT started today and it was good to not be flat on my back all day. Sore but feel overall much better in mind and body for being able to moon orderlies occasionally hoping down the hall with a walker. Then a more experienced therapist came along and suggested a 2nd gown worn like a jacket over the first☺️

(Actually quite happy with the additional cover)

Janie, that's good. Rehab is where they offer tedious but helpful tasks for your recovery. We like the idea of recovery. I'll send you an email.

Well, folks, I can report that she's as healthy and happy as you can be while you're still jacked up and pinned down. It's very nice where she is, but it ain't home, and it's crowded and noisy. What's probably needed is a damn good song circle, so I'm arranging to fly in a couple of world-renowned experts in that department.

She's way more gracious and patient than I could ever hope to be in her position, that's for sure : )

She needs laughter, music, and still good wishes for healing.

Susan, if you look at the bottom right hand side of the video screen you will see some icons. Click on the cogwheel then click the appropriate box to "turn on annotations".
If that does not work, then perhaps you do need to use a PC.

I,m lobbying hard to get them to send me home. I,be done.all the rehab that can be done re the leg until I can put weight on it and have developed enough upper body strength to get around well enough with wheelchair and short hops with a walker. Just need to get a fire lit under worker comp case manager to approve a temporary ramp so I can get in and out of house.

I'm really amazed by the kindness and helpfulness of neighbors and friends, both while I am here, and what they have offered to do once I'm home to make it possible to be home.

:) Maeve I missed the boys ploughing match this year but love to go down and see the it is so funny to watch dads and grandads shouting advice and measuring like their life depended on it.

Let's hope they organise the escape committee quickly. You could always follow the example of the brother of my big brothers German friend. He had been taken prisoner by the Russians. He noticed them trying to figure out how to make a bicycle work. He offered to show them how to ride it. Back and forward he rode then let them try again but they had never seen one before so were still very wobbly so he offered to show them again, jumped on the bike and peddled furiously down the road.

Many years ago I did the children's talk at church based on the making of our national drink from the cutting down of the grain onwards. A little Friday morning nonsense...W.S. Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan fame, so the story goes, hated the Limerick verse form & wrote the following in protest:

"There was a young man from St. Bees
Who was stung on the arm by a wasp.
When asked: "Does it hurt?"
He replied: "No it doesn't'
I'm so glad that it wasn't a hornet".

Yes, grateful to say, Home! And sorry not to have posted earlier. The transition has been wonderful but exhausting, and I have had to spend most of the afternoon and evening resting and napping.

Joe, Amos and Tony rescued me about lunch time yesterday. They are my knights in shining armor. We had a wonderful and leisurely lunch at a sidewalk table at a local pub under beautiful skies, a gentle breeze and perfect temperatures. It was sooo good to be outside and free. They lugged me to the pharmacy and waited patiently with me while prescriptions got filled and billing got straightened out, then took me home.

I confess I was so relieved when I got in the door that I cried.

After unloading the car, moving furniture around to make room for the wheelchair to maneuver and making sure I could transfer from wheelchair to other seating arrangements and back again, they left me to have a bit of a nap while they went to fetch Dani from work.

Early evening they arrive again, Dani and supper in tow, my sister arrives and we have a lovely coming home gathering, complete with a bit of song.

More settling in this morning - I didn't really think I needed my sister Annie to come down, but I was wrong and so glad she insisted.

Some issues with the ramp - the wheelchair wants to rear up on the back wheels when the front wheels hit the start of the ramp, where there is a bit of a bump. If that can't be addressed somehow doesn't look like I will be going outside to sit while home alone. The durable equipment that was supposed to be delivered today did not come either. But at least I have the wheelchair and the nursing home lent me a walker until one is delivered - the only way I have access to the 'necessary room.'

Your posts here continue to cheer and encourage me. Need to go back to bed and rest some more now.

Thank you, all you angels.

thank you for the update lass. Be very careful with the wheelchair its point of balance is wrong the wheelchair nurse set Davit's new chair up with the POB so far back that the char tipped when we stopped for lunch on our way to Inverness once and he ended up in A&E. if the chair has a seatbelt put it on and lean slightly forward when you hit the ramp.

I'm sure now you are home you will come on in leaps and bounds (But no to much o either)

Joe not on all of them but the more modern ones can they usually have those push knobs you see on adjustable walking sticks simply press it in and move it one hole towards the back of the chair (if possible get two people to do it get Janie out of the chair to do the adjustment. Then while Janie is in the chair on a flat surface with someone standing in front of her and the brakes on gently tilt back the person at the front can act as counter weight by pressing on the arms to right it if it is still a bit to vigorous) The person at the front isn't always necessary but if the user has had a fright with the tip their presence is reassuring.

The easiest way to adjust the center if gravity of the chair is to sling a couple of gallons of water under it on a rope, at the forward point where the weight is needed. A heavily loaded purse will do in a pinch. (THEN lean forward.)

Another poss fix is adding the Harbor Freight folding ramp to decrease angle, under $150.

And then there's this from today's news. The first sentence is classic:

LONDON — A former meerkat expert at London Zoo has been ordered to pay compensation to a monkey handler she attacked with a wine glass in a love spat over a llama-keeper.

A judge at Westminster Magistrates' Court said Wednesday that Caroline Westlake must pay 800 pounds ($1,235) to Kate Sanders for assaulting her in a dispute over colleague Adam Davies, who had dated both women.

Judge Jeremy Colman also sentenced 30-year-old Westlake to 12 months community service for assault.

The judge said Sanders had suffered a "nasty" face injury in the fracas at a zoo Christmas party on Dec. 8.

Westlake had claimed that Sanders punched her first, and said she did not remember hitting her colleague with the glass.

She was fired by the zoo after the incident.

I agree with Dani. That article Sins posted is definitely song challenge material. (So is the exploding eggs episode!) How many times have I told you, Sins, you have to stop living so dangerously?!

Weight lifting and long naps appear to agree with me. Stronger every day so able to do more in the house and make more trips around the house with the walker. Hope to start bearing some weight on the broken leg after I see the surgeon again next week. Can't bend it to a right angle yet, but a little more bend seems to be happening. Hope this is temporary and that legs will be more equal once more strengthening and stretching of the thigh muscle commences in earnest, but at present the injured thigh looks to be a good 1 1/2 inches shorter than the other thigh. The left foot doesn't quite touch the ground when I stand straight within the walker.

I was thinking of you the other day Janie.

I was walking around the yard looking for a lost chicken and I fell down this hole. I got a few nasty bruises and it took me quite a few minutes to be able to crawl out of the hole which was nearly 3 feet deep.

So I had to laugh at myself because I knew that the hole was there, I just wasn't paying attention.

I thought of you when I got to thinking "I was lucky I didn't break anything".

So now you can laugh at ME.

Yes, Chantylass. Right now they are sending both an OT and a PT out to the house a couple of times a week and I have about an hour's worth of exercises to do twice a day. PT for the leg is somewhat limited in scope until I can start putting some weight on it - hopefully next week.

Here is the motivational video I'm focusing on now:>) When the leg is better than new!

Hi Janie hope the weather is being nice where you are today. I wont be outside today the winds are around 70mph part of the reason very few trees in Orkney grow above the level of the nearest house and our few woods rather resemble giant green mushrooms in shape as each tree dares to grow a few inches higher from the edge to the centre of the wood.

Today I found this video A walk up the Sma Glen I love his voice.

Hope you are improving have you been able to put weight on the injured leg yet or is that still a while away?

Oh my, Megan. That is nearly a hurricane force 'breeze!' It definitely seems you live in a wild, severe, and beautiful place where one is ever reminded that we are but part of powerful nature, and not the rulers of nature.

I have enjoyed and appreciate all the links so many have shared, but especially enjoy all your videos that provide these lovely walking tours. In this most recent, what happened to all the trees? He mentions the wild hyacinths are evidence that the glen was once quite forested. Where I am from, in West Virginia, much of the place has been clear cut at one time or another, but most of those clear cut slopes somehow reforest themselves within 50-75 years.

Re: wt. on the leg, starting this past Monday, 25% of my weight, and doing laps in the house with the walker to promote healing and bone strengthening. Still using the wheelchair for two-handed tasks, or for lengthy distances. Have also been released to drive locally, as long as I use good sense about my endurance with the walker, or have access to an electric cart in stores.

Not celebrating yet because it has not been that long - but no cigarettes since 9/15 when I fell. Longest period of time in 45 years I have managed without a cigarette. Gonna get fat again if I keep it up - but maybe my bones won't break so easily next fall.

Not entirely sure Janie sheep get blamed for a lot as areas were cleared for livestock.

Glad to hear you are starting to rebuild strength When my Dauvit and I were courting he was running me to the airport when I told him I didn't like to kiss an ashtray, he opened the window of the car and threw the packet he had just bought out of it he never smoked again from that day.

Now as long as you don't do what several of the old lads did when we moved in here you will be alright, they got their hands on three mobility scooters and were racing them up and down the road like boy racers.

Janie I came across this today Tom Wier was a great outdoors man and a friend of my dad. Both loving to head out of the city like a lot of Springburn folk who worked in the railway yards during the week at the weekend they would catch a bus or cycle up to the Trossachs and walk most often stopping for the night in a quiet spot where they would pitch their tent.

My dads first tents were home made with tiking(a tightly woven cotton used for mattresses) which was dipped in alum to make it waterproof. Even when I was young it was a job for the first warmer dry day of spring to dip the tents and spread them over the washing lines to dry ready for the camping season.

Tom was a quietly spoken friendly man with a great love of his country and its beauty. His Sister Molly Weir was a well known brittish actress and writer of cookery books.

Ohh, Megan. Your posts and links belong on even a separate thread. Would be a wonderful thread with the prefix "folklore." And would comment, compare, and commiserate regarding the ways parts of Scotland and the Appalachian plateau areas of West Virginia and Kentucky resonate. Am only about 10 minutes through Tom Weir's video and will return to it as soon as I finish this post. Those first scenes and comments could be about my own homeland, the hills and hollers of the western half of West Virginia. At least in some ways. The opening hike could be mistaken for a hike up a switchback above a West Virginia holler on the central Appalachian plateau. I think what in Scotland is called a glen, in West Virginia is called a holler (hollow.) Narrow valleys carved out by creeks and a few shorter rivers among ancient, rugged hills that millennia ago were towering mountains higher than most ranges that exist in the world today. Ancient, fey, rugged lands. Most of the height of the mountains where I was raised now rests along the Mississippi Delta or lies at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Your time, care and attention in locating and sharing these videos is such an act of kindness. I am so grateful. You are opening doors that I am otherwise too lazy and too timid to have found by myself.

I had a thread going for a while called sunshine thoughts filled with all the places and events that made people smile.

I rarely get out much these days so spending some time "lukin fur peedie nims" (looking for little treats) for you is a pleasure.

Today I thought I would share with you some of our island music we have a strong fiddle tradition that we share with the Shetland isles. When I came here as a new bride many years ago it was still quite common to see the much loved fiddle hung beside the peat fire.

The old man in one house told me it was kept there because in old dry stone walled houses which were usually damp and bothered with woodworm the warmth from the fire and the peat smoke helped keep the fiddle sweet and free from damage.

Rousay fiddle music sadly now many of us live in centrally heated houses the old fiddle is in a case in a cupboard out of sight out of mind.

A wet stormy day here so hids fine tae snuggle up wie a mug o hot chocolate and this lovely video from our northerly neighbours a Shetland lace is a knitted lace now I mesel hivna the skill but a full shawl is something to be treasured and often passes down from mother tae daughter through the generations.

I got the chance to return tae Shetland this year and spent four wonderful days rootin aroon on the main island. The landscape is rugged and free the folk are quiet yet if you tak time tae spik wi dem they are warm and generous. (That should give Maeve something to translate :) )

As a child on the edges of Glasgow I could never understand how ower peerie (In Orkney peedie i.e. small) Sheltie (Shetland sheepdog) could ever be of any use herding sheep. Having seen these small hardy sheep however it no surprise for an overwintered Shetland lamb weighs in at about 22KG compared to an overwintered Scottish Black face which comes in at about 40Kg.

Lass these might be the last ones for a while I am having some problems with the machine so it will be going for a check up.

This one is for Halloween. From the earliest I can remember my dad took me around the Glasgow necropolis . This city of the dead is filled with interesting architecture and people. The city was famous for ship building and heavy engineering and many of these captains of industry can be found alongside the poet who wrote "Wee Willie Winkie"

One of the last times I visited was with My brother in law and his wife and my Dauvit, They watched amazed as I would touch a memorial saying " this was name, he was Trade" I never realised how much of what my father had told me was still in my head.

My favourite stone however is not some fancy mausoleum but a simple rectangle of stone belonging to a Glasgow grocer, how do we know this? well all round the edge of the stone is a list of the things he sold and the opening hours of the shop.

The second is from a cd that came with the book of Scottish folk songs I never realised till I got this book just how much folk songs I had absorbed from my mum. She had a simple philosophy in life If you are happy sing because you are happy if you are not happy sing to make yourself happy.

Janie, Here is a link to a piece of music I composed, that is now being used in 6 hospitals in 4 states, for psych and cardio therapy. The cardiologist told me that "...there is a LOT of healing in this music.."
Try it, it will take you away, and play a movie in your head...but it's YOUR own movie....makes healing a bit easier.
When I took in a stack of CD's, for the cardiologist, and hospital, I gave them permission to copy and use them...no licensing..or money stuff...free. So, Mudcatters get that too...You WILL heal...I wish it a comfortable one!!

I have to say that last year after the Getaway, Janie cooked me the best steak I have ever had in my life. This year, we had roasted chicken from the supermarket - but we still had a good time. Still, Janie, do you think you could arrange for steak next time?

I hadn't known much about Megan until after I came back from Orkney this year. I'm sure I walked right past her house, because I walked every street in her time in the four days I was there. If only I had known who she was and what a nice person she is.

But I have had the profound privilege of knowing Janie for many years, and that has been a pleasure.

Thanks Wesley!

The pleasure is mine, Joe. Next year, steaks it will be!

What a shame that Joe and Megan did not meet. I suspect you are true kindred spirits. And Megan, I continue to relish your links, as well as those of others. I've never traveled outside the USA (rarely outside of the eastern part even here,) but should I ever have the opportunity, you have made the Orkney Islands a "must visit."

I'm to call the orthopaedist's nurse today to determine if I can return to work part time next week, before my next doctor visit. Worker's comp is pushing me to do so, but also pushing for 3 days a week going to an outpatient PT place. She is thinking that pool therapy plus the equipment available for me to work with would speed strengthening and weight bearing, and I agree. However, I have arthritis and other tendon/ligament/joint problems with my shoulders, wrists and hands. My concern is I still can't put more than 25-30% of my weight on the leg, which means using the walker puts considerable stress on those joints, etc. (The upper body muscles hold up pretty good. It's the joints and tendons, etc. that hurt and pop.) I need to use the walker as much as possible because weight bearing will promote bone healing. All the walking with walker involved with getting into and around the office at work 4 days a week plus getting into a PT place 3 times a week, in addition to taking care of ADL's risks me blowing out the upper body parts. I'd rather wait until I actually see the doctor and get more x-rays, and have a couple of weeks of the outpatient PT in the hope it will help me put more weight on the leg and less on my upper body parts before going back to work part time.

I don't advocate for myself very well with doctors and case managers and also am loathe to be misunderstood as being lazy or a shirker. So wish me luck and courage to speak up for what I think I need today when I talk with the doctor's office, and later with the work comp case manager.

the blackening is a peculiar Orcadian custom relating to weddings it happens to the groom though now some females seem to have adopted it, thankfully because I got married just outside Glasgow both Dauvit and I were spared the silliness.

The victim is waylaid by his friends and stripped, bound and bundled onto a lorry (Truck with a open flat bed) He is then Blackened with flour treacle and feathers and trundled round the town for a while, this can take a few hours and often involves beverages that are not tea or coffee. at the end the poor soul is often unceremoniously dumped in the sea to clean of.

the blakening

The blackening and other wedding customs most of which have gone out of use now except for the cog which refers both to the wooden receptacle made using the barrel makers skills(having two longer handles so that it can be passed from hand to hand among the guests) and the drink contained therein.Orkney wedding customs

Janie, you would be an effective advocate for your clients, yes? In this case you are your own client. Get in there and tell them what is needed! Your plan makes excellent sense. Their misconceptions are their issue, not yours. I see nothing in this situation that would suggest anything other than an intelligent person working toward good healing using best practice.

Today I found this lovely recording of Ye Banks and Braes played outside Robert Burns cottage in Alloway. Every year as a child we would go there I believe the have built a fancy visitor centre now.

Little did I know then that the first 19 years of my married life would be spent in an almost identical dry stone cottage except the one we rented had a slate roof.

Hi Lass hope you managed to get some weight on the leg.

When I was little no Saturday morning was normal without a trip to the Glasgow Barras (a covered market) It was said you could find anything there a wander through the stalls was always an education from the old (well he seames awfy auld when I was four) man who used to play the hammer dulcimer (the instrument still fascinates me today) to banter from the various stalls.

In the days before the NHS looked after our health my big brother remembers the snake oil man and a big black man who used to pull teeth with his fingers.

I love farmer's markets. Sold at them for years. Very different from the Saturday market Daddy would take us to when we were small. Loved them then, and love them now.

Go back to work half time on Monday and starting outpatient PT (as opposed to home exercises given by a PT who was stopping by every week or so.) According the Dr. and the x-rays, bone-knitting is slow, but is happening. Can put some more weight on the leg but gonna be stuck with the walker for at least another 6-8 weeks and still dependent on wheelchair to cook, do laundry, or go any distances. The upper body joints, tendons, bursa and ligaments continue to be challenged. It's a balancing act - as is much of life, eh?

In good spirits.

Thanks, y'all!

Well Janie I hope the time at work didn't tire you to much.

Scotland revealed was a series a few years ago it captured my wonderful land.

I remember many years ago some cousins came from Utah to visit we were commenting on the beauty of their country and its largeness. One of the girls admitted they did have wonderful places but would often have to travel for a long time to get a change of scene. She said it was the thing she loved most about Scotland that you could travel a couple of hours and have traversed several different types of landscape.

In Glasgow which back in my fathers youth was a smoky dirty industrial city you got a bus or jumped on your bike on a Friday night and a short time later you were sitting outside your tent by a lochside (lake) enjoying supper ready to walk valleys or mountains the next morning.

Progress is slow but prognosis for full recovery remains good. Still restricted to walker and wheelchair but hopeful next x-rays will show enough bone healing to allow me to graduate to a cane.    Have lost a lot of muscle mass. If I could put full weight on the bone right now, it would collapse because of the weakness of the muscles. Have also developed some tendonitis below the knee.

Start serious outpatient PT next week and that should help push progress a bit faster.
