Subject: General help: Baring-Gould family From: Vixen Date: 03 Dec 99 - 02:12 PM D'Cats Not wanting to "clutter" an "information thread" with what might be perceived as "trivia," I thought I'd better start a new thread... ;> On the Lily of the West thread, someone mentioned a collection of folk songs by S. Baring-Gould. I *JUST* inherited (literally two weeks ago) an "annotated Mother Goose" by two Baring-Goulds. Who are these Baring-Goulds, and what other books should I be looking for by them? I love the Mother Goose. Did they do similar things with folk tunes? All info appreciated! V |
Subject: RE: General help: Baring-Gould family From: Bruce O. Date: 03 Dec 99 - 02:36 PM I think the 'Annotated Mother Goose' (and a book of Limericks) were from descendents of the Rev. Sabine Baring Gould. |
Subject: RE: General help: Baring-Gould family From: Jon Freeman Date: 03 Dec 99 - 06:38 PM I mentioned Baring Gould in the Flora, Lily of The West thered. I am pretty (if not completely) ignorant on these matters. All I know is that I own a copy of "Songs of the West" which apart from having his name on the cover, was edited by Cecil Sharpe and I would imagine that it would have been a very good collection of songs for its time. Only shame is that mine has a page missing (torn out - either me or one of my 3 brothers must have done it as kids) that has the words to Strawberry Fair which was a song my mother used to play on the piano for us and I used to love - maybe one day I'll manage to restore it one day. Date: 04 Dec 99 - 02:27 PM Put 'Baring Gould' in the last name box of 'search' at www.bookfinder.com and you will find several books by Sabine and William Baring Gould. Sabine was a prolific author, and not all of his books will be found there. |
