Reading this BBC article, I'll admit that I can't really think of any decent songs about climate change.

There must be some out there?

Hmmm. Lots of weather songs, but not much on Climate Change. We have lots of environmentalist songs in the Rise Up Singing and Rise Again Songbooks, but not much specifically on climate change - but many of them would work well at climate change gatherings.

Here's one I like, to the tune of Bella Ciao:

SONG FOR THE CLIMATE (Do It Now)
(w: Nic Balthazar & Stef Kamil Carlens)

We need to wake up, we need to wise up
We need to open our eyes & do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now

We're on a planet that has a problem
We've got to solve it, get involved & do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now

Make it greener, make it cleaner
Make it last, make it fast & do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now

No point in waiting or hesitating
We must get wise, take no more lies & do it now now now
We need to build a better future
And we need to start right now

——w: Nic Balthazar & Stef Kamil Carlens, m: trad. (Italian "Bella Ciao") arr: Stef Kamil Carlens
© 2012 Belgian Climate Coalition. Sing for the Climate took place in Belgium in
Sept 2012. 80,000 Belgians sang "Do It Now" in 180 town squares.

Grey in LA by Loudon Wainwright

And I suppose Larry David sure knows
All those cars we drive heat up our earth
And sea temperatures rise and those constant blue skies
And brush fires can sure curb your mirth

I recently retired from a 30 year career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where I worked closely with several climate scientists.

I and my partner Kathy Westra have lately been singing Woody Guthrie's version of "Sowin' On The Mountain". It seems oddly prescient:

"God gave Noah(!) the rainbow sign" 3x
"It won't be water, but the fire next time."

"Where you gonna run to when the world's on fire?" 3x
"Little darlin' pal of mine."

Some old German folksongs about spring are implicitely songs about climate change:
I hear "Come, dear May, and make our trees green once more" and think: What are they talking (singing) about, most trees have leaves since mid-April...

Subject: ADD: Gaia Wakes! (Nockford?)
From: GUEST,Mike Middleton
Date: 20 Nov 15 - 11:17 AM

Gaia Wakes! by Nockford on their Leviathan album. No one seems to have heard of this but it's a rock concept album with global warming as the backdrop.

GAIA WAKES
recorded by Nockford
Songwriter: ???

Gaia wakes in vengeful mood
We wanted oil, she gave us food
We cashed in her annuity
Amoral ingenuity
To rob her long developed grace
We used – and see! We pox her face.

Gaia wakes!

Our sleeping mother roused and sore
The ripples run toward the shore
A simple shiver starts the cure
And drowns like rats this great impure
Race of clever fools, the tools
They leave behind will rust, no mind
Will see or weep or keep the books
To tell - betraying child betrayed.

Gaia wakes!

A boat undamaged rights and spins
In heavy clothes and blood I flap
And cling. A loaded breaker punches
Me to turmoiled bilge and sick
I lie in howling storm and cringe.

Gaia wakes!

One… modification… too far
Risk register… incomplete…
Gaia… now… will hit… delete.

Gaia Wakes! is here http://nockford.bandcamp.com/track/gaia-wakes

The album is on iTunes here https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/leviathan/id451765963

A passing Comment

The Bad Year

As I stand on the land and I look at the sky,
And I watch the rain pour, I could lie down and die.
The meadow's a pool and the turf's gone to suds,
Sure I hadn't the heart to go digging the spuds.

The hens got the gapes they gave up laying eggs,
When the pig tried to grunt he got weak in the legs.
The back yard is a pool and the garden's a bog,
Oh the poor farmer's life isn't fit for a dog.

Well I got wrinkled and old and me hair it turned grey,
While the torrents of rain made manure of me hay.
The cows they went dry 'twould bring blood from a stone,
To watch the poor creatures go all skin and bone.

The child got the measles, me wife got upset,
Meself got the flu from me clothes getting wet.
Coughs and colds I contacted a crop of chillblains,
While me joints they swelled up with most terrible pains.

Ah but that's over now for this year is a gift,
I'm a rich man at last by good farming and thrift.
It can rain, it can snow, it can blow a monsoon,
For I'm all for the caper above in Lisdoon.

Jim Carroll

Gibson & Camp's song WELL,WELL,WELL also uses the "not going to be a flood, but a fire next time" line. (Personally, I think climate change is gonna bring us both)

I KNOW that Zoe Mulford has at least one, but can't think of it at the moment.

Sandra Kerr has adapted Child ballad #3 as a tribute to Greta Thunberg and the movement she inspired. There's a YouTube video version of Girl Upon the Road, and it's also on the new CD Rebel With Her Chords (for which you'll need to decide which of the links Google provides is most relevant to your needs -- therefore, no Blue Clicky).

I’m trying to be greener every day (every day), Just a little cleaner in every way

The things you throw away, We could use another day
Recycle all those old newspapers please, Then we won’t have to chop down all those trees

I’m trying to be greener every day (every day), Just a little cleaner in every way

I’m planting pulses row by row, Just to keep my food miles low
Don’t buy your beans at Asda any more, Let runner beans run up to your back door

I’m trying to be greener every day (every day), Just a little cleaner in every way

The Amazon, they say, We should treasure every day
Two thousand fishes swim within your view, And seven of them like the look of you

I’m trying to be greener every day (every day), Just a little cleaner in every way

The earth is like a sauna, It’s too hot for its fauna
I’d like to save the gnu and kangaroo, The birds and bees, the chimpanzees
The lofty lark, the great white shark, The lowly worm, the pachyderm
And - oh yes - me and you

Henry Peacock

I assimilated rather than learned the following song maybe 30 years ago and sang it at the then Colpitts FC, Durham. Remembered too late I should have done it Friday night (23rd Aug) at Richmond Black lion. Prediction or what.

When the rainforest falls
The axe to the root
The desert enlarge without flower or fruit
When the rainforest falls
Who will keep the air clean
Without flower or fruit
Without forest green
When the rainforest falls
The man with the axe
Bundles it up
Into paper and sacks
Ch
You may live to see it one day
When the rainforest falls, the rainforest falls
It's a bad dream that won't go away
When the rainforest falls, the rainforest falls.

Sorry I don't know who wrote it, someone will.

One pop climate/eco song crossed over and made the charts by Hudson/Ford in 1974..'burn baby burn', written before anyone knew about carbon emissions etc. It's catchy pop, with a bit of environmental conscience thrown in. Some on-line lyric databases have slaughtered the lyrics with cloth eared transcription mistakes, so I won't reproduce them here. Not folk music, but Hudson/Ford came out of the Strawbs.. so kind of protest music in a lighter form.

Click on Climate Change song out of this list. It’s to a he tune of Baby Faxe.
Some of the other songs mention it.

https://carboncanaries.com.au/the-songs/

Baby Face
You got a trusting little
Baby Face
That’s why I swear I will
protect this place for you my
Baby face
Gotta stop that carbon pumpin’
I swear I will do something

Baby face
I will not stop until Fossil Fuel’s in disgrace!
This earth is your bequest
So I will do my best
(for you) my little baby Face

Climate change
We’ve got ourselves a little
Climate change
More than the weather is now going strange
with Climate Change
my poor heart is thumpin’
we sure have started somethin’

Climate Change
We like the temperature in
The usual range!
Law-makers need a shove
To save this earth we love
Cut fossil fuels, cut Climate Change

Repeat first verse

Then there’s emergency by Blythe Pepino

Lyrics to "Sinking Fast":-

Sinking Fast
1.        (E) Uncertain destinations calling drowning like a stone
Freakshow world around us – hear those sirens moan.

Chorus:

We’re sinking (A7) fast, we’re sinking fast,
This(B7) ship is headed for the rocks (A7) in that stormy blast,
And (B7) will we perish on the sea, tied (A7) up to that mast
So let’s (F#) sing our final shanty tune be(A)fore we breathe our last.
We’re (E)sinking fast, we’re sinking fast

2.        Those predatory parasites upon this world they tread,
Of all the fruits they drain it, and leave us pale and bled.
We’re sinking fast....

3.        You lead us to the ballot box as to the altar shrine
And shamelessly you milk the trough and steal the bread and wine.
We’re sinking fast.....

4.        From your tunnel vision mother nature reels from shock
And blindly stumble onwards and hear that ticking clock.
We’re sinking fast.....

5.        Headed for that melting pot that point of no return
Grasping for that parachute before we crash and burn.
We’re sinking fast.....

6.        Great global amoeba hoovers up everything
Hanging by our finger tips to one last hope we cling
We’re sinking fast.....

7.         The banker’s in his tower of glass, the dog has chewed the bone,
And grandma’s on the toilet playing with her phone.
We’re sinking fast.....

8.        No future for our children, they can only drown
Sucked into the whirlpool, that slowly drags them down.
We’re sinking fast.....

(short hold on E(7) chord

9.        The rich behind their iron gates, the beggars multiply,
While we’re all dreaming of Range Rovers in the sky.
We’re sinking fast.....

10.        So let’s raise our voices one and all before the die is cast,
Tell it on the mountain this song will be our last...
We’re sinking fast.....

Play through sequence as instrumental then fade on E(7) chord.

Maybe Tom Paxton's "Whose Garden Was This?"
Whose garden was this?
It must have been lovely.
Did it have flowers?
I've seen pictures of flowers,
And I'd love to have smelled one !

Whose river was this?
You say it ran freely?
Blue was its color?
I've seen blue in some pictures
And I'd love to have been there!

Ah, tell me again I need to know
The forest had trees
The meadows were green
The oceans were blue
And birds really flew
Can you swear that was true

Whose gray sky was this?
Or was it a blue one?
Nights there were breezes?
I've heard records of breezes,
And you tell me you felt one.

Ah, tell me again I need to know
The forest had trees
The meadows were green
The oceans were blue
And birds really flew
Can you swear that was true

I can think of two songs that directly or indirectly address the problem.

Power, by John Hall, also recorded by Peter Paul & Mary , was an effective ( and melodic) song about the ' poison power' 'of nuclear energy. But it could easily be tweaked to represent climate change.

The Comiing of the Roads - a poignant story telling song, was about hypocrisy and greed; and filling the air with polluting smoke from the mines.

And we probably need to write a few more songs.

From: GUEST
Date: 17 Oct 19 - 06:54 AM

EXTINCTION REBELLION! say it loud and clear
We’ve come to change the future, RIGHT NOW! RIGHT HERE!
*We only have one planet there is no Planet B
*The oceans are rising ...and SO - ARE - WE!

We’ve got to stop the carnage, the plunder and the greed
We’ve got to learn to share, we take more than we need
*We stand for what we stand on, we come in hope and fear
EXTINCTION REBELLION! You know why we’re here.

(chorus)

WE- STAND - AGAINST the way the world is run
We have to change the system, we’ve only just begun
Every living creature is here with us today
EXTINCTION REBELLION! We are here to stay.

(chorus)

* The starred lines are taken directly from banners and placards at climate change and XRebellion demonstrations.

Any song about floods or failed crops. Any gospel song about the end of the world.

How about?

Five Feet High And Rising
Johnny Cash
How high's the water, mama?
Two feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
She said it's two feet high and risin'
We can make it to the road in a homemade boat
That's the only thing we got left that'll float
It's already over all the wheat and oats,
Two feet high and risin'
How high's the water, mama?
Three feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
She said it's three feet high and risin'
Well, the hives are gone,
I lost my bees
The chickens are sleepin'
In the willow trees
Cow's in water up past her knees,
Three feet high and risin'
How high's the water, mama?
Four feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
She said it's four feet high and risin'
Hey, come look through the window pane,
The bus is coin', gonna take us to the train
Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain,
Four feet high and risin'
How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
She said it's five feet high and risin'
Well the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water goes down,
Five feet high and risin'
Well, it's five feet high and risin'

I `ad one of them E.R. wallers in my cab the other day. `e was dressed up to look something like a cucumber with salad cream on `is `ead. It was all made out of glitter and `e left it all over my seats.
`e said, "Morning Jim. Can you take me to The Bank of England please.? I`m joining the demo."
I said, "Yeah, but surely you ought to walk rather than pollute the place with my diesel and compromise the planet."
`e said, "No, I need somewhere to write my Climate Change song."
I said , "`ave you done much of it then?"
`e said , " I`m getting there with the words, no tune yet. What do you think?"
I said, "Let`s `ave a listen."
`e said, "I see the waters rising, covering the ground.
Let`s get on the second floor in case we all get drowned.
I`ve got a pair of water wings, they`re made of fine bamboo
I will not `ave the plastic ones. I `ope that these will do.
Another thing I want to know. I think we should be told.
That when Apocolypse arrives, will it be `ot or cold?"

I said, "Don`t give up your Uni course!!!"
