Subject: Folklore: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: TonyGillespie Date: 06 Dec 15 - 08:55 PM Hello! During my journey to complete my collection of Sing Out magazines, I have found myself at a bit of a dead end. I'm looking to: 1. Confirm the existence of a few issues (as I've NEVER seen them anywhere.) and 2. See if anyone has them and wants to trade/sell their copies. Looking for the following...any help would be greatly appreciated! Volume 1, Number 8 (Jan 1951) Volume 1, Number 9 (Feb 1951) Volume 4, Number 7 (Fall 1954?) Like I said, unsure if Sing Out even produced these issues, so if you have one, and can at least confirm it exists, I would be grateful!! Thanks, friends!! Tony |

Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: TonyGillespie Date: 06 Dec 15 - 10:01 PM Thanks for the response. Hopefully Joe will chime in. I've been on Sing Out's website, and didn't did any answers. I haven't sent them an email as of yet, because I've heard they are in a transition period since Pete's (Seeger) death, and I was afraid I wouldn't hear back. Thought I would try the great Mudcat first!! Thx again, friend! Tony |

Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 15 - 11:55 PM Hi, Tony - I, too, am trying to assemble a complete collection of Sing Out! Magazine. But if you're searching in the rarefied air of the 1950s, you must be well ahead of me. I'm missing most of the 1980s, and almost all of the 1950s and 1960s until 1966. The magazine's Website (click) has an index of recent years (back to 1994), but I don't know of an index of the entire run of Sing Out! The Website does have a Song Index. Using [CTRL-F] to search for 1#8, 1#9, and 4#7, I can tell that the magazine did indeed publish the issues you're seeking, because there are songs from those issues in the index. Good luck in your quest. If you do assemble a complete collection, put it in your will for me, willya? At the prices people charge for Sing Out! on eBay (click), I'd never be able to afford to buy myself a collection. I wish the complete run of the magazine would be made available online. That would be a boon to all of us aging U.S. folkies. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 07 Dec 15 - 10:04 AM So what is a fair price for copies of this magazine? I have a number issues from the late 50's until the large format came along. Is it worth me climbing into the attic to sort them?. I along with the magazines am in the UK. |
Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: GUEST,# Date: 07 Dec 15 - 10:34 AM This will give you an idea of roughly how much they go for http://www.ebay.com/bhp/sing-out and whether climbing to the topmast is worth the candle (or something like that). |
Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: TonyGillespie Date: 07 Dec 15 - 04:12 PM Thanks, friends!! Now I know they exist, which is good. Now to track them down. 1. Joe Offer...I sent you an email. 2. Guest #...thx for searching the archives for me. I appreciate that dedication!! 3. Guest Hootenanny...some issues go for higher (example, I just sold a Volume 12, Number 4, the first appearance of Bob Dylan, in a little beat up shape, for $31. However, others only get a few bucks.) If you do make the climb, and have the issues I'm missing, I would gladly pay a premium for them!! Thanks again!! |

Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 17 - 10:17 PM The magazine's Website (click) has cover photos and tables of contents for issues 39-1 (1994) through the most recent one in print, 55-4. That last issue was published in Spring 2014, and the cover is a tribute to Pete Seeger, 1919-2014, I suspect it may be the last issue of On a happier note, I have a variety of extra Sing Out! Magazines from the 1960s through the 1970s. Since they were given to me, I feel bound to give them away (for the cost of postage). You collectors, let me know what issues you need and I'll try to help. My collection starts with Volume 10 (1960), and is fairly complete after that. If anybody wants to be really generous and help me out with magazines from the 1950s, I'm listening. Thanks to a very generous Mudcatter, I have at least half of the issues of the magazine that were published in the 1950s, and they're real gems. I wish Sing Out! would just scan the whole run and make it available to everyone online. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Zhenya Date: 12 Jan 17 - 12:26 AM I have a copy of Volume 38, Issue No. 4. The date is Feb/March/April 1994. The main cover picture is an illustration of a baby playing guitar and harmonica and surrounded by a few other instruments. The picture is labeled "Generation F". There's a fairly long cover article discussing the (at that time) younger generation of folk musicians. There are smaller cover photos of Mike Seeger and Jorma Kaukonen. Joe, I like your idea about making all the issues available online. I have many back issues, but nowhere near a complete collection. I'm in a small apartment with lack of space to add many more magazines, but I'd love to be able to read the issues I don't have online. |
Subject: RE: Sing Out Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Jun 19 - 03:02 AM I'm still looking for most of the issues from the 1950s. I emailed the magazine and offered to donate to get the back issues online, but I got no reply. Joe |

Subject: RE: Sing Out! Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Jun 19 - 10:48 PM I logged-on at my alma mater and searched the JSTOR database. There are any number of reviews published in other journals about Sing Out! volumes, but not the journal itself. That would be the ideal solution. Did Bob mail those to you, Joe? My dad subscribed, but I don't remember their being at the house when I packed up everything. I'll bring in a step-ladder later and take a look at the tippy-top shelf in my library, I see some saddle-stitched publications that are the right size up there. |

Subject: RE: Sing Out! Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Jul 19 - 11:36 AM During the temporary move I've come across other limited-print volumes from one of British Columbia (Vancouver) folk groups. It's packed away behind a plastic wall right now, but I'll name it here and give a range. I don't know that every publication out there needs it's own thread, but someone looking at the Sing Out! thread might be interested in others. It can go from there. I still have a lot of boxes of stuff that I just moved, didn't open, so I may have more. Dad was good at tracking down things to create complete collections (his superpower was Reference Librarian) Joe, you listed this as absent from your collection:

And can any of those reprints fill in for the originals? Maggie |
Subject: RE: Sing Out! Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jul 19 - 01:39 PM Hi, Maggie. I think you've got the list right. Most of the songs from the early issues were in the reprints booklets - but the Reprints booklets contain only songs. I think all of the Reprints booklets were included in the two collections of reprints that were published (pink and blue books). But the reprints did not include the articles from the magazine, and it is those articles I am trying to collect. |
Subject: RE: Sing Out! Magazine Back Issue HELP From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Sep 20 - 01:43 AM OK, I'm still trying to get a response from Sing Out! If anyone here knows anybody on the Board of Sing Out!, can you get them to find somebody to at least consider my proposal? Here's what I wrote to them today:
I like the that you're keeping Sing Out! alive online.. What you're publishing is good stuff. The Website is wonderful. I'm wondering, though, if there's some way to put the old issues of Sing Out! online. I've been able to assemble a personal collection of most of the issues from 1960 to present, but I'm really spotty in the 1950s. And this is really a collection that should be available to everyone. Is there some way that you can make the back issues fully available to everyone on the Sing Out! Website? I have a pretty big IRA, and I can get a big tax deduction by making a contribution directly from my IRA to Sing Out! What would it cost to make the entire run of the magazine available to everyone? I've written to you before, but I haven't received a response. I'm willing to make a sizable donation (i.e., lots of money) to make this possible. If you don't want to tackle this, at least please refer it to your board for discussion. All the best to you. Joe Offer, Music Editor, The Mudcat Cafe |
