Now with downloading sites such as iTunes people can just buy songs they want but I was curious if in the past you have ever bought an LP or CD just for one or two songs you liked only? If you did, what album was it and what song did you like from it?

I came across an old LP I have by Kenny Rankin that I bought at a used record shop for $3.00. I wasn't particularly a fan of his and not really into the majority of the songs on this album which is called, "Silver Morning" from 1974. I bought it for one song only that I liked which is a cover of the Gordon Lightfoot song,
"Pussywillows, Cattails." I have always loved that song and so I bought it just for that song. Of course it is very folky and Kenny does a great cover of it. The rest of the songs are more jazzy, pop style and not folk at all. Nothing wrong with that but I just personally never got into the other songs, genres on this album.
His arrangement of the Beatles song, "Blackbird" is not too bad.
Also, I love the beautiful art work on the cover. I was very impressed by that.

Yes. Alice's Restaurant.

Sorry. I couldn't resist. It's just past the 50 year anniversary of that epic release.

I bought a Procol Harum LP solely for their song "Conquistador," though their other songs can be decent if I'm in that kind of mood (particularly "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence). And Paul Simon's There Goes Rhymin' Simon for Kodachrome and Loves Me Like a Rock, and his album Paul Simon for Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. Other than those, not really any off the top of my head.

Mind there is a difference between buying an LP for only one song or buying an LP because of one song. I've bought many an LP in my youth because I'd heard one song from it. Here in the Borders there weren't any listening booths etc. So if you heard a song by a new band you liked you'd often take a risk on the album. Not sure if I've ever bought an LP for one song where I'd heard and not liked the rest of the album!

Many albums that I purchased from 1964-now was based on hearing and liking one song.
Then there were albums I purchased from the "Cut-Out" Racks (remember those?) for $1 where I had never heard any of the songs.

#, I'm dumbfounded to think that you can recall a list like that on short notice. I can only think of two instances right off:

The good buy; an Emmy Lou tape, for her recording of "If I needed you" with Don Williams. It was several years after before I really became otherwise aware of Townes Van Zandt.

The misfire; Jeff Buckley's CD with "Hallelujah"; so far as my taste, there was nothing else on the CD remotely worth recording.

Hey, frogprince. It took me about twenty minutes to get that list down and it's only part finished. I have no idea where any of the LPs are now.

Had a few of them myself. Eres Tu by Mocedades back in the 1970s. Loved the take--as did half the world--but the LP didn't quite cut it for me.

I Nomadi does sound like a lot of pure delight that hadn't heard of before, down here in the monolingual world. Didn't you say you learned of them when you and Augusto used to go the the same hairdresser? ...

Yes, I have and still do. Which? Too many to list. CD. DVD. Didn't in vinyl days but there are many vinyls I have I'd pay for the whole thing to be digital for just one song (if not otherwise findable).

Why? If I want to learn a song and can't find it otherwise. Used if possible unless by an artist who is a member of an ethnic group far more oppressed than I.

Other Whys (cd, dvd) might be if I hope to learn more about a person very different from me or others I love, and it's one of their very favorite songs/films. Or if I want to use it from my library in working with folks in various settings. Or if I want to donate the cd/dvd after enjoying it....

Dean, I had that exact same reaction to that Jeff Buckley album.

I've bought many albums (CDs, whatever) because I liked one song. Most of the time, I've ended up liking most of the other songs, too. Those, I generally don't remember, with the exception of Bill Staines' album Tracks and Trails. Bought that one for the song "Travelin' Shoes" and instantly fell in love with the whole album.

One that I bought because of just one song was Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance. Turned out, that was the only song I liked on the whole CD. I kept it until a friend gave me the CD single in a book with the lyrics.

Not quite one song exactly, but I did buy a CD knowing that I didn't like around half of it! What happened is that I accidentally smashed my copy of Anthems in Eden. "Anthems" itself I loved, but the other songs on the CD were, I thought, a right old hotchpotch. I didn't know that the first time I bought it, but I did the second time, but went ahead and bought it anyway!

When I used to buy CD's and LP's I considered myself lucky if I liked 4 or 5 recordings off the whole deal. Now thanks to Spotify I carry an enormous and diverse record collection around in my pocket.

In the days of licorice pizzas I used to do that a lot. Usually I would find much of the album enjoyable. It also worked with vinyl singles...comes to mind "The Great Pretender" by the Platters. I eventually liked the B-side much better, "Am I Just Another Dancing Partner?". You've probably never heard it.

Well, in the old days, I bought lots of albums ( ordered them at local record ship) where I had never heard the performer sing.
For example,I bought a Phil Ochs' album on the strength of " There But for Fortune" by Joan Baez.

Yes! I just bought a "CD" from Richard Digence's Website, for the song "Jack of All Trades", and I'm Bitterly disappointed with it;

Apart from the fact that it cost me AUS$28 odd inc shipping, it has 10 tracks, one of them (Track 6) lasts all of 30 seconds and is bundled in with track 5 (so in effect, 9 tracks), the recording quality is barely passable.

The real kick in the arse though is that the recording is burnt onto a CDRW and the cover looks home made.

NOT HAPPY JAN!
