I'm wondering if anyone can name this tune. I learned it by ear at various tunes sessions in Manchester UK quite a few years ago and don't think I ever knew it's name. I find it makes a nice guitar solo and I'd like to be able to name it properly and know something of it's origins.

The ABC as I remember it is;

X:
T: Session Waltz
C: unknown
M: 3/4
L: 1/16
Q: 150
K: Am
|:"Am"E4 A4 B4 |c4 B4 A4| e12-   |e12    |E4 A4 B4 |c4 B4 A4|"Dm"f12-   |f12   |
| f4 d4 e4 |f4 e4 d4|"Am" e4 c4 d4|e4 d4 c4|"E7"EFE2^D4E4|c8   B4 |"Am"A12-   |1A12   :|2A4 a6 ^g2|
||:"Am"a4 e6 ^d2|e4 c6 B2|c4 A8- |A4 e4 ^d4|"Dm"d8 d2e2|f4 e4 d4|"Am"e12- |e4 e4 f4|
|"E7"e4 d4 c4 |d8 d2 e2|"Am"d4 c4 B4|c12   |"E7"EFE2^D4E4| c8   B4 |"Am"A12-   |1A4 a6 ^g2:|2A4 a4 ^g4|
||:"G" g8-    | g4 a4 g4|"C" e12-   | e4 f4 e4|"G" d12- | d4 e4 d4|"Am"c12- | c4 d4 c4 |
|"E7"B12-    | B4 c4 B4|"Am" A12-   | A12    |"E7"EFE2^D4E4| c8   B4 |"Am"A12-   |1A4 a4 ^g4:|2A12   |]

I've named it provisionally as Session Waltz because it's a waltz and I learned it at sessions but I'm sure it has a proper name.

The nicest looking ABC convertor I've found is this

blue clicky

Copy and paste the file into the convertor to see the notation.

The old fasioned URL is

http://www.clivew.com/abc.php

if you want to save it. I can't get the midi to play but maybe others will have better luck.

I think it might have eastern European origins. Does anyone know it?

The Finnish waltz "Metsakukkia" ("Woodland Flowers").

Most often done in G minor.

Less than an hour! Well done, Jack Campin.

Thanks Jack. I can see I've got some relearning to do. Apart from getting the last two parts the wrong way round, I've got a few melodic elements mixed up as well.

As to key, as soon as you get away from piano accordions (discordions?) there are several versions in Am. I'll stick with Am and relearn the tune. Thanks again.

Thank you, Stanron and Jack, for this beautiful tune.

I checked the version at abcnotation.com, and I like yours better, Stanron. Besides, the abnotation version has a mistake in the third line, and when I try to save it as a MIDI file (so I can print it bigger) all the timings after the mistake are a schemozzle.

I'm playing it on the piano already.

Stanron's version is pretty discombobulated. It's often played in the English session scene in more like the Finnish way.

I admit that I've got the tune mixed up over the years. All the versions that I've found online, now I actually know the name, are as Jack has posted above. However the key of Gm, relative to B flat major, seems to be limited to piano accordions. As soon as string players get hold of it it goes up to Am and that is still my preference. Thanks again for the title.
