Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: GUEST,HiLo Date: 11 Jan 16 - 10:53 AM Hunky dory is one o my all time favourite albums. David Bowie was one of the most influential artists of his time. Had far more influence than McColl simply because he Reached a much wider audience. |
Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: GUEST,Ed Date: 11 Jan 16 - 10:41 AM Oh do have a little sense, akenaton. MacColl didn't die today. Maybe that has something to do with it... And if you can't recognise the hugely greater influence that Bowie had on music in general, then you are incredibly misinformed or stupid. Perhaps both? |
Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: akenaton Date: 11 Jan 16 - 10:20 AM Sad news, but amazed at the blanket news coverage. The world in flames and this sad little event makes the top news story on every outlet, umpteen soundbites about how David "changed peoples lives".....Mr MacColl got hardly a mention and his work changed a lot of lives......his "First time ever I saw your face" was real songwriting. |
Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 11 Jan 16 - 10:08 AM He wasn't a folk singer in the sense that he sang folk or traditional songs. He was along with the likes of very early Marc Bolan a singer songwriter doing some acoustic based music. Some people regarded that as being folky! However people want, or don't want, to label the Space Oddity album etc matters not really. Some great songs on it! |
Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: Felipa Date: 11 Jan 16 - 09:38 AM I've just read a long Bowie obit in Guardian newspaper (UK) It does mention Bowie starting a folk club (and i think he must have been a neighbour of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger at one point, or maybe they lived in the same town at different times). But he doesnt seem to ever have been a folk music performer. I was amazed at how productive Bowie has been for most of his adult life - and even when he had various personal difficulties in his life. I hadnt realised just how many acting roles he had taken on either. |
Subject: RE: Obit: David Bowie RIP (1947-2016) From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 11 Jan 16 - 08:07 AM I echo all the previous thoughts on this post and should be interested to learn about his 'Folk' days. He was involved with the running of a Club - where and when was that? Any memories out there? |
