Subject: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST,Kevin Rietmann Date: 19 Jan 16 - 05:51 PM I have a big collection of folk song books that I'm selling; I've collated the collection pretty thoroughly, here is a spreadsheet detailing everything, and if that doesn't work here is a plain text version. On the spreadsheet I included links to almost every book's listing on Amazon, using the lowest given price. The grand total is over $1200. These books almost entirely are from the American traditional song repertoire, and include the complete 4 volumes of Randolph's Ozark Folksongs, all 7 volumes of Brown's North Carolina Folklore, and all 3 volumes of Songs of the Newfoundland Outports. These 3 items alone are worth about $600. Note that these prices don't include the original shipping costs, which were generally $3 per item, which amounted to $240 for all 80 items. As stated I'm still exploring options for selling these items, and mean to check with large sellers or universities for quotes, or perhaps try eBay if no offers are forthcoming; in the meantime feel free to contact me with any questions via email at klrietmann @t frontier d0t c0m. I may resort to selling individual items in the end, but the shipping costs and hassles are pretty bothersome when dealing with one book at a time, I'd prefer to sell large parcels or all of it at once, if possible. |

Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 19 Jan 16 - 10:40 PM Hey, thanks for the interest. What is it auctioneers say? "HEYBIDDERONEBIDDERONEBIDDERONEBIDDERTWOBIDDERTWO!" ;) I thought of a couple of more ways to verify that I have these books in hand - I've linked to a couple of pics of the books in a stack; also I live in the Portland Oregon area and can get in touch with the local folklore society if need be, perhaps someone lives nearby and could take a gander. Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jan 16 - 11:45 PM Gee, I have almost all those books. The one that really caught my eye is Botkin's book on play party songs. Kevin, if it's in good condition, I'd be glad to pay $20 plus postage. I'm likely to buy a copy within the next week, now that I know the book exists. I nearly drop dead of mildew poisoning every time I open a volume of Peacock's "Newfoundland Outports," so I guess I'd be interested in that, too. I have most of the books on the list, but I guess I'd pay $400 or so for the lot, plus postage. -Joe- joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST,Dejah Leger Date: 20 Jan 16 - 02:35 PM I'm super interested in ANYTHING related to franco-american culture, especially the books you have on New Brunswick and Maine. If you wanted to put together a bundle of any of your books related to Franco-Americans or Acadiens, I'd buy the bundle!!! |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 20 Jan 16 - 05:36 PM My copy of Botkin is an ex-library book in good shape, excepting a few pages in the middle which were crudely taped back into place, it's otherwise intact. It figures that a book from the Maritimes would be damp and stinky... |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 20 Jan 16 - 05:52 PM What edition is your copy of Sam Henry's 'Songs of the People' and is it hardback? Please feel free to reach me by email here. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST,Kevin Rietmann Date: 20 Jan 16 - 07:34 PM I've contacted a big local bookseller and 4 count 'em 4 local major universities and will see what they have to say here. Thanks again for showing an interest. |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST,Dejah Leger Date: 20 Jan 16 - 07:44 PM But for reals I would really, really love to chat about the Acadian books you've got (the Helen Creighton collection, the Maine lumberjacks). I don't know that too many other people would be interested in Acadian songs but I definitely am. I'm in an Acadian group here in Seattle. You can contact me at dejah at hearthmusic dot com. |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: EBarnacle Date: 21 Jan 16 - 05:39 PM I sure would like to get vol. 4 of the Vance Randolph. |

Sincerely, Gargoyle I am also looking for "Jeromy Banks" HB Lyden NL published through USA North Carolinia |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Jan 16 - 07:55 PM Kevin, if you want to give me a really good price for the Botkin book, I might take it. Otherwise, I'll go online and pay $25 for a book without taped pages. -Joe- joe@mudcat.org |

Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST,Kevin Rietmann Date: 22 Jan 16 - 08:31 PM Hi all, I may have to sell these piecemeal after all - UPS Ground Ship from here in Oregon to, say, Boston, for 3 packages of 40 lb boxes (books aren't light!) is ca. $250 in of itself. Other shippers might be slightly cheaper, of course, haven't checked everything, but doubt there are any big savings to be had on that front. I happen to be in driving distance of mega book seller Powell's and noticed you can just enter a bunch of ISBN numbers on their website and get an estimate, so I spent about 45 minutes figuring out almost every one of those numbers, plugged 'em in - and was informed they were interested in just one tome...yes, most of the titles of the rejected books showed as well. So, if any of you willing to buy the lot can drive to the Portland Oregon area I can put the collection into your hands, otherwise looks like I'll just sell what I can bit by bit. None of the colleges I've contacted have responded in any way, a couple of them did state they only accept donations... I'm really after cash at the moment, am between jobs and selling off what I can to make ends meet. I'd prefer of course to get these books into the hands of my fellow musicians who'll actually get use and enjoyment out of them, of course. Anyway, thanks for your patience here. Kevin |

Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: Deckman Date: 23 Jan 16 - 08:22 AM Perhaps this might help: In Everett, Washington, we have a small business called "The Mail Box." I's owned and run by one lady who, for a very small fee, will package and ship boxes or anything, including books. She ships them, also insured, by either U.P.S. or FedEx. You might look to see if you can find such a store in your area. Hope this helps ... bob(deckman)nelson |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 16 - 03:54 PM Do you mean Southern Oregon University? I've contacted OSU and the UofO, who are the Microsoft and Apple of Oregon higher education, sort of, for those outside the Pacific Northwest. I'd figure if any college within driving distance could gobble those books up it'd be them! Haven't tried PCC yet, hmmm. My Mom used to teach for them - had some real amusing/horrifying stories about their rampant waste. Turns out my financial status isn't entirely dire, thankfully. Just ominous. Big diff! Thinking about it, I went looking for a website that compares shipping rates, the way Orbitz etc compare travel prices, and feeding my numbers into the calculator at shipgooder.com I get $171.83 to ship to West Boston via FedEX, a bit of an improvement, but not much. The books are currently in 3 boxes, 20x12x10, weighing 40 lbs for 2 of them and 35 for the other. It's brutal to put stuff like that on a truck, no way around it. I can't see a middleman like a shipping center type place being able to undercut the big companies in any way. If the buyer were in the PNW I'd gladly drive them to their destination, being out of work at the moment anyway, hence my approaching colleges and Powell's books. Anyway, will wait another week and see if I hear back from anybody. |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 16 - 06:17 PM Contact Ashland - above. IF they will accept...you will get a tax donation. They could/might place the books in the student lounge for free dispursal to those interested. It is sad to break up such a grand collection...however, it might spark another generation, as each picks up a few. |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: Deckman Date: 23 Jan 16 - 07:46 PM Some years ago, when I was getting deeply involved in my archiving project, I took a serious look at my hard bound books and LP records. I tested the waters for a few possible buyers and got very little interest. I then made the decision, which still pleases me today, to simply give them to individuals I know who would value them, use them, and most IMPORTANTLY, make them available to other researchers. Think about doing just that. The folks I passed them out to glady paid the shipping costs. bob(deckman)nelson |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: Celtaddict Date: 24 Jan 16 - 12:44 AM The concern I have about this sort of sale, of full collections, is the same as with boxed sets and 'complete works' items; if I am interested enough to consider it, the odds are I probably already have a fair percentage of them. I think you will definitely make more money selling them individually, despite it being more work. |
Subject: RE: Folk Song Books For Sale From: GUEST Date: 08 Feb 16 - 06:25 PM I've given up on selling the lot to institutions, only heard from a couple of them, and selling them via other avenues didn't go anywhere either, so if anyone still wants to buy all these tomes contact me at klrietmann @t frontier d0t c0m. The shipping for FedEx will be $140 to El Paso, $185 for Boston, maybe $200 for Florida? |
