You should contact Henry Sapoznik--https://www.facebook.com/henry.sapoznik As some of us at least know, he wrote the book about it (Klezmer: From Old World to Our World) and did the Yiddish Radio Project for NPR, started Klezkamp, played klezmusic in Kapelye, and probably started the somewhat annoying custom of using "klez-" as a prefix. If he can't tell you more about this, he knows someone who can.

Well, and now that I've commented that I wasn't getting any responses I got two.   I got one from Peter Rushefsky of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance informing me that he forwarded it to their experts in the field, and one from Michael Aylward, owner of the site "Der yidisher gramofon." Mr. Aylward informed me that the recordings were made in New York in September of 1923. Before the First World War Ludwig Satz was a child star of Gimpel's Theatre in Lemberg, but left Galicia for the USA in 1912 when he was 21. It's not their kind of repertoire (or that of any present-day klezmer band), so I doubt they'll have encountered it before.

The words are very clear. Most cities in the West have a few Yiddish speakers and asking round a synagogue should locate one.

This page tells you how to contact the organization that hosts Yiddish Song of the Week. They could pass the request on to Itzik Gottesman (whose email address I seem to have lost). He'd almost certainly be interested.

Two bits I can make out in the first one: "eyn, tsvay, drey" is "one, two, three", presumably the dance instructor showing how to do a routine. And "a bisele mazl" is "a bit of money", as in this better known song:

The Orchestra is Joseph Cherniavsky's Yiddish-American Jazz Band.

The cellist, band lieder and composer Joseph Cherniavsky, born 31 March, 1894 in Lubny in the Poltava district of Ukraine, is a perfect example of a musician who grew up and was trained as a klezmer, left the klezmer milieu to further his training as a classical musician, returning as a adult to klezmer and Yiddish music not because of a necessity, but out of a love for the genre.

Cherniavsky had yikhes (a good family pedigree) : his grandfather was reputed to have been none other than the real-life prototype for Sholom Aleichem Stempenyu.

At the age of ten, Cherniavsky studied in Odessa with his uncle, violinist Alexander Fiedelman, most famous for having taught Mischa Elman. He then attended the St.Petersburg Conservatory (graduated with a Gold Medal), where he studied cello and conducting as a student of Alexander Glazounov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Afterwards Cherniavsky continuing his studies in Leipzig with Professor Julius Klengel, the teacher of Emmanuel Feuermann and Gregor Piatigorsky.

After immigrating to New York, Cherniavsky began an association with Maurice Schwartz and his Yiddish Art Theatre. The first team-work's production was Cherniavsky play Moishe der fiddler produced by Schwartz on 21 April, 1920. The next theatrical season Yiddish Art Theatre had open with the Shloyme An-ski's popular play The Dibbuk, first performed on 1 September, 1921. The musical score was written by Joseph Cherniavsky. His next work, in collaboration with Julius Adler, was a musical score for Moishe Nadir's Der Letster Yid performed on 2 November, 1921.

In 1922 Cherniavsky had established Hassidiche (later Yiddishe) American Jazz Band. The band toured American and Jewish vaudeville circuit extensively. Although billed as a "Jazz-Band", there is nothing jazzy about either the music or the instrumentation of Cherniavsky's Yiddishe Jazz Band, which does not differ from the typical larger klezmer or Yiddish Theatre ensembles of the early 1920s. But there also was and a little difference : the staff. With Joseph Cherniavsky on cello and his wife Dora (Lara) Cherniavsky on piano, Naftule Brandwein (lately replaced by young Dave Tarras), Shloimke (Sam) Beckerman on clarinets with addition of Philip Greenberg it was maybe most starry klezmer ensemble in history.

In 1923-1924 theatrical season Joseph Cherniavsky wrote music for Boris Thomashefsky and his Broadway Theater operettas Di dray kleyne bizneslayt and Tanz, gezang un wein.

In the late of 1920s Cherniavsky moved to Hollywood, where he wrote the musical score for a Show Boat movie in 1929. He toured the USA as a conductor in theatres and in concerts. He also created and conducted the NBC Radio program "Musical Camera" in New York.

Joseph Cherniavsky died at 3 November 1959 in New York.

I know the guy who runs that channel and he found that along with loads of other 78s (all gospel/country ones in miraculously good shape compared to the typical Goodwill shattered 78s). It was the only non-Country/Gospel 78 in there, and I just wanted to know what he said. It is a comedy, after all--I want to know if it's funny!

I will be at that (for the 6th time, I think) - but we tend to stick to material that uses mainstream Eastern-European Jewish melodies, the older and folkier the better, and it looks like Satz was in a different game.

Ian Stern at Kleznorth might know something, though. And there is a historian of the London Yiddish theatre who seems to know EVERYTHING about Yiddish popular culture - can't remember his name, Machover maybe? I went to a talk by him and it was like being hit over the head with an encyclopaedia.

How did you get interested in these recordings?

Hi - I think there are a good number of folk musicians who at least dabble in Yiddish. We've had some great discussions of Yiddish songs here at Mudcat.

Ludwig Satz was born in Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine) in 1891, and emigrated to the United States in 1912. He died in 1944. These recordings were made on the Columbia label, in about 1923. The New York Times called him the greatest Yiddish comic actor of his time, so he must have been a big deal. His papers are at the American Jewish Historical Society in New York City.

I have a shelf full of Yiddish songbooks, mostly purchased from http://www.jewishmusic.com/, but I can't find anything by Satz in them or at the company's Website. My favorite Jewis lyrics Website is http://www.zemerl.com/, but I can't find any Satz songs there. Your recording is at the wonderful Recorded Sound Archive at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, but I can't find a transcription.

I can't make out much of the lyrics. In the first one, "Der Tantz Master," Satz sings "1, 2, 3" over and over again while giving dance instructions.

The other song? I haven't a clue.

Sorry if I offended anyone by my remark. I meant they tend not to get on here--I've seen very little Klezmer stuff here in my experience.

so it isn't a very likely piece of klezmer repertoire. (Copying the Yiddish title in the original script into a Google search box gives some results that might help). The second sounds like nothing I can recognize from any culture, it's too broken up with giggles to make musical sense.

Anyone know Yiddish? I know there's probably not a huge pool of Yiddish-speaking folk musicians (the circles tend not to cross!) but if anyone does I would greatly appreciate help translating these videos a Youtube account I subscribe to posted recently.
