Subject: Lyrics; The Shearin's Nae For You From: Barry Finn Date: 20 May 97 - 06:16 PM I'm looking for at least 2 other verses that are not in the DT database. I have "Do you mind on younder hill my bonnie lassie O (2X), do you mind on younder hill where you said you would me kill, if you did not get your will". What's in the DT is "Take the buckles frae your shoon. Take the flounces frae your gown. Do you mind on Greata (sp?)Green, and the chorus. Thanks, Barry |
Subject: ADD Version: The Shearin's Nae For You From: LaMarca Date: 21 May 97 - 02:32 PM The Fisher Family (Ray, Cilla, Archie and another sister) recorded a version on an old Topic LP with these three verses, with "The shearin's nae for you" as the chorus:
Tak the buckles frae your shoon, my bonnie lassie-o (3X)
Tak the ribbons frae your hair, my bonnie lassie-o (3X)
Tak the flooncies frae your knee, my bonnie lassie-o (3X) There's a Burns version called The Banks o' Aire which has a lot of verses, but I don't remember them that well. It's a good deal grimmer than the already melancholy idea that the lassie's social life is over now that she's pregnant. It includes verses implying she got that way through forcible rape:
Do ye mind the Banks o' Aire, bonnie laddie-o (3X)
Do ye mind on younder hill, my bonnie laddie-o (3X) You can maybe find the rest of it (or the correct wording for the two verses I've tried to remember here) by looking up Banks o' Aire in a Burns collection. |
Subject: RE: Lyrics; The Shearin's Nae For You From: Barry Finn Date: 21 May 97 - 11:53 PM LaMarca, Thanks, that was more than I was looking for, and better than I expected. The verse I have with Greta Green follows with - "when you played on my machine" and the verse with the flounces goes "take the flounces frae your gown, make a frockie for your loon. Barry |
